Showtime is being sued by the family of Tammy Wynette‘s fifth husband, George Richey, for what it claims is a negative portrayal of Richey in the network’s limited series George & Tammy. As reported by Variety, Richey’s wife, Sheila Slaughter Richey, and their daughter, Tatum Keys Richey, filed the suit against Showtime for depicting Richey “as a devious husband who abused Wynette and Richey’s prior wife, facilitated and encouraged Wynette’s addiction to prescription painkillers, and engaged in financial and managerial manipulation of Wynette.” The White Lotus actor Steve Zahn portrayed Richey in the series, which premiered on Showtime on December 4, 2022. The show also starred Jessica Chastain as Tammy Wynette and Michael Shannon as George Jones. A spokesperson for Showtime responded to the lawsuit, stating, “We see no plausible basis for any claim against Showtime,” as per Variety. Steve Zahn as George Richey in ‘George & Tammy...

As we get ready to close out 2023, it’s time to look back at the films that entertained us and left a lasting impression. It was the year of Barbie vs. Oppenheimer (affectionately referred to as “Barbenheimer”) battling for the summer box office, and The Flash with Michael Keaton returning as the Caped Crusader in a film that fell short of reviving the DC movie franchise. A classic coming-of-age story from the 1970s finally found its way to the screen, and 2023 also served up yet another delightful adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel.
The following films represent my personal favorites of 2023. These films, from a wide range of genres, mesmerized me and reminded audiences of the magic of movies.

This story about Michael Shannon first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine. All actor interviews in that issue were conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
Perhaps the only thing more surprising than “George & Tammy” star Jessica Chastain receiving her first Emmy nomination as country legend Tammy Wynette is that her journeyman costar Michael Shannon is also receiving his first Emmy nomination as country legend George Jones, despite an impressive TV background that includes HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers.”
“Jessica fought to get me in there after there was a vacancy,” Shannon said of his Oscar-winning “Take Shelter” costar, “because I think some of the powers that be were like, ‘Can we get somebody a little more… whatever?’”
But as he’s been doing throughout his remarkably chameleonic career, Shannon provided something far...

[Editor’s note: The following interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, 2023.]
Jessica Chastain is not easily shaken. She faces her fears and whittles them down to something she can handle. And takes a shot of whiskey if need be. She landed an Oscar for daring to become the mascara-loving title character in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” Actors understood that she had to love the outlandish TV evangelist, who was a joke in many quarters, in order to understand her.
And the same is true of Tammy Wynette. However, “George & Tammy” (Showtime) presented another order of high-diving-board difficulty. It was one thing to sing like Tammy Faye. It was another to take on live-performing, opposite musician-actor Michael Shannon as country icon George Jones, as an all-too-familiar country superstar.
That was never the plan. Chastain was first approached back in 2011 at the Golden Globes by Josh Brolin, who was developing the story of Jones and Wynette. “I had never been in...

Get ready for a continuation of the recurrent rotation between “The Super-Mario Bros.” (Universal) and “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) as #1 and #2 on PVOD charts. Both films (each priced at $19.99) will likely add two more weeks minimum back and forth atop the lists after a similar battle the last two.
Netflix meantime has about as top-heavy a list of older theatrical releases, with only one original making their top 10 (in tenth place). Of note there — “To Leslie,” virtually unknown before Andrea Riseborough’s surprise Oscar Best Actress nomination, initially reached #1 before dropping to a still notable #2 (behind the 2013 comedy “We’re the Millers”).
“John Wick” kept “Smb” from a second week at #1 when it was released. But this week, “Smb,” by far the biggest domestic theatrical hit for 2023 so far, returned to #1 at both iTunes and Vudu. “John Wick” still leads at Google Play, but that site usually lags for a few days,...

Photo Credit: Dana Hawley Judy Blume was in her early thirties when she wrote her bestselling book, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Now, she’s 85 years old, but that didn’t stop her from taking an active interest in the film adaptation of her book. As one of the film’s producers, she could often be found on the set during shoots, something that didn’t go unnoticed by the film’s stars. Rachel McAdams, who plays Margaret’s mother in the movie, told us that seeing Blume gave her and her castmates additional inspiration and incentive to do their best work. The film, set in 1970, begins with 11-year-old Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson) returning to her New York home from summer camp only to discover boxes in the living room and her bedroom. Judy Blume’s beloved 1970 classic young adult novel finally makes it to the big screen in a sweet film of the same name, Are You There God? It’S Me, Margaret. The biggest question with this charming film version is what took it so long? Maybe it was waiting for writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig, who has crafted a marvelous film adaptation, that balances the novel’s honesty with a lightness and entertaining touch appropriate for the character’s age. An excellent cast, and perfect music from the era, complete the picture.
The film offers plenty of moments pre-teen girls will recognize, but this film is for everyone regardless of age or gender. It also has nostalgic treats for parents who read...

They lived their lives and conducted their tormented, torrid relationship as if reenacting the country lyrics that made them famous. Showtime‘s lively, and splendidly acted, George & Tammy limited series makes real the supposed clichés of alcoholism, addiction, heartache, and unquenchable love that fuel so much of the Nashville music scene. There may never have been a power couple who so potently embodied these themes as the volatile George Jones (Michael Shannon) and his headstrong soulmate Tammy Wynette (Jessica Chastain), who stood by her man until she no longer could. You’d expect actors of this caliber to bring emotional authenticity to their scenes of high passion, violent conflict, and deep regret, and indeed they deliver. But you’re likely to be even more blown away by how convincingly and ardently they provide their own vocals. Dana Hawley/Courtesy of Showtime The ...
