“With great power comes great responsibility” might be the most important line in superhero fiction. It crystalizes a theme present in the best superhero stories even before Spider-Man‘s debut in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman tales and Bill Parker, and C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel adventures. The line transforms superhero stories from mere power fantasies to stories about service and care, about empowering others instead of consolidating power for yourself.
So when a member of Las Arañas, Madame Web‘s ill-advised magical natives, tells Cass Webb (Dakota Johnson), “When you take on the responsibility, great power will come,” it’s clear the production team has lost the plot.
Director S.J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the script with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, and certainly a boardroom of IP lawyers, intends the line to break Cass out of her...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Madame Web,” a spin-off (grin) of Spider-Man, who first appeared in Marvel Comics back in 1980. This origin story also features a three-woman team (teenagers in the film) that also eventually spin their webs. In theaters on February 14th.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Dakota Johnson is Cassie Webb, a paramedic in early 2000s New York City. After suffering a near fatal drowning, she begins to have odd visions of events happening before they happen. She shares this power with Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) who has visions of his demise through a team of Spider Women. Both Cassie and Ezekiel have spider venom in their blood that was discovered in South America by Cassie’s mother in the 1970s. How they use these powers is the origin of “Madame Web.”

Madame Web star Dakota Johnson says the film’s script underwent some “drastic changes” after she signed on to the project.
The Sony-Marvel film has been savaged by critics as one of the worst superhero movies of the modern era.
But Johnson — who plays a New York paramedic who develops psychic visions — says the script she originally saw was very different than what was shot and released.
“There were drastic changes” made to the script she told The Wrap with a laugh. “And I can’t even tell you what they were.”
It’s a revelation that suggests one of two things: The Madame Web script — by director S.J. Clarkson along with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker — was weakened as it got closer to shooting by creatives second guessing the original work. Or, heaven help us, the superhero film was somehow greenlit by a major studio with...

Let's just say your Spidey-Sense better be tingling, because this article contains spoilers for "Madame Web."
It's not really on the same level as Nick Fury welcoming Tony Stark into a much wider world than he ever imagined, but "Madame Web" has now officially entered Sony's Spider-Man Universe. The live-action shared universe may be built entirely around Spider-Man's rogues gallery and assorted supporting characters ... but it doesn't actually feature the famous Web-Crawler himself. Yeah, we're still trying to figure that one out. Whatever the case may be, this oddly cobbled-together franchise made up of both "Venom" movies and the disaster known as "Morbius" now has another ignominious addition to its ranks, and, well, it went about as badly as everyone expected.
But with great power comes great responsibility, as some fictional dead guy you might've heard of once said, and the same certainly applies to how "Madame Web" teases...

Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) in Columbia Pictures’ ‘Madame Web’
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a weird place right now. Since the end of Phase 3 and “The Infinity Saga,” the movies seem to be just throwing stuff against a wall to see what sticks. Unfortunately, Madame Web doesn’t quite stick.
Madame Web is about a New York City paramedic named Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) who, after a near-death experience, discovers that she has clairvoyant powers. Meanwhile, a dark figure named Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who also has clairvoyancy (as well as other spider-like powers), has dreams of three young women named Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya (Isabela Merced) who will develop similar powers to his and eventually kill him. Cassandra’s abilities allow her to detect Ezekiel’s plan and she vows to stop him. But to save their future, she must confront her own past.

You know a superhero movie is in trouble when even the “first reactions” from fan sites are scathing.
Now the critic reviews for Marvel and Sony’s Madame Web have been revealed (read on below), and the writeups are pretty devastating for the Spider-Man spinoff.
Madame Web is from director S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) and stars Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) as a New York paramedic who develops psychic abilities, with a script by Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker.
Johnson escapes most of the criticism, but everything else is getting skewered as the latest example of superhero movie fatigue meeting a genuinely disappointing film. Madame Web (which falls under the Sony umbrella) arrives just two months after The Marvels became the lowest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe title of all time, earning just $206 million. If the below reviews for Madame Web are any indication, it may open even...

2024 is going to be light on superhero movies (relatively speaking) but comic book cinema will be present on the big screen on Valentine's Day. Sony's latest "Spider-Man" spin-off movie "Madame Web" is hitting theaters, introducing several brand new spider-heroes into the ever-growing Marvel multiverse.
Following in the footsteps of movies like "Venom" and "Morbius," as well as this year's "Kraven the Hunter," Sony is once again making the most of the Marvel Comics characters it has the rights to in the larger "Spider-Man" franchise. Specifically, it sees Dakota Johnson bring Cassandra Web, aka Madame Webb, to life alongside an impressive supporting cast.
But is this a one-and-done? Or is the studio setting up more for the future? We're going to discuss the movie's post-credits scene situation in spoiler-free fashion. Seriously, we're not going to spoil anything. We're just here to arm you with information so you can be ready on opening weekend.

From the moment the infamously bad first trailer dropped, we knew Madame Web was going to be an absolute vibe. But even putting aside lines about researching spiders in the Amazon right before the main character’s mom died, Dakota Johnson’s recent press tour for the movie hasn’t exactly helped this latest Sony superhero foray feel like a winner, either.
For example, while lauding director S.J. Clarkson during an interview with EW, Johnson shared this little tidbit about the way the film was shot: “I’ve never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there’s fake explosions going off, and someone’s going, ‘Explosion!’ and you act like there’s an explosion. That to me was absolutely psychotic. I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an okay job!

The Spider-Man universe has a cadre of supporting characters in its vault. Cassandra “Madame” Web is one such character who first appeared in the Amazing Spider-Man issue #210 in the fall of 1980. Created by Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Cassandra is an elderly, disabled woman with precognitive abilities who helps Peter Parker find a kidnapping victim.
Transitioning from the comic book origins of Cassandra who is introduced as a character of depth and mystery, the film adaptation directed by S.J. Clarkson, and written by Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker, squanders any possibility for expansion of the Madame Web world through clinical and formulaic storytelling.

There’s something so demoralizing about lambasting another underwhelming Marvel offering. What is there left to really say about the disappointments and ocean-floor-level expectations created by the mining of this intellectual property? Every year, studio executives dig up minor characters, dress them in a fog of hype and leave moviegoers to debate, defend or discard the finished product.
Madame Web is one of these recently exhumed efforts. The film, directed by Sj Clarkson and starring Dakota Johnson as a clairvoyant paramedic in New York, has as much energy as an employee subjected to an ice breaker during a corporate retreat. It is an airless and stilted endeavor driven by a mechanical screenplay (written by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker & Clarkson). Its lack of imagination would be astounding if it wasn’t so expected. When Sony dropped the trailer two months ago, the early reactions were nothing short of brutal.

Paramount’s musical biopic Bob Marley: One Love will tower over Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web with an expected gross of $30 million-$35 million compared to the Marvel pic’s $20M-$25M over the six-day Valentine’s Day-Presidents Day stretch.
While those figures haven’t changed much since they arrived on tracking, doesn’t that seem a bit anticlimactic for a Presidents Day stretch? I mean, Disney/Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania did $120.3M in its four-day opening a year ago, and many poured cold water on that result. Get with it: Who wouldn’t want that now?
“In a trough of non-moviegoing, it’s hard to gin it up again, unless you have a franchise-type movie, which Dune: Part Two is at the start of March,” observed one razor-sharp rival motion picture exec about the dual Hollywood strikes’ impact on the 2024 theatrical schedule.

Matthew Vaughn’s twisted mind has come up with a peculiar spy thriller where an author named Elly Conway writes a story about Agent Argylle in her book, only to discover the events coming true. Sony Pictures’ “Madame Web,” a standalone origin story in the studio’s array of “Spider-Man”-based Marvel characters, has been granted a theatrical release in mainland China. The film will open in the country on March 1 — two weeks after the title’s Valentine’s Day bow in North America and multiple international territories, including the Chinese-language markets of Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The release marks a welcome opportunity for Sony, which, along with the other traditional studios faced difficulty in securing theatrical runs in China over recent years. Two years ago, the company’s smash hit “Spider-Man: No Way Home” became one of the five highest-grossing films of all time at the global box office, but it achieved that milestone without playing in the Chinese marketplace — once a reliable boost for Hollywood releases only a decade ago.

Madame Web is headed East. Sony said today that its stand-alone Spider-Man spinoff from Marvel will hit China on March 1, two weeks after its North American bow.
Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future and realizes she can use that insight to change it. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women who are bound for powerful destinies — if they all can survive a deadly present.
Here is the trailer:
Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott also star in director Sj Clarkson’s action thriller for Columbia Pictures. The screenplay is by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker & Clarkson.

Move over, Spider-Man… there are some new web-slingers in town.
Sony has released the first trailer for “Madame Web,” starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, a suspense thriller set in the studio’s universe of Marvel characters.
Johnson steps into the leading role of Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic who may have clairvoyant abilities — which allow her to see into the future and the interconnected spider world. In the trailer, she meets and forges a partnership with a trio of young women — including Sweeney’s Julia Carpenter, who later takes on the mantle of Spider-Woman in the comics — to understand her past and survive the deadly present.
The cast also includes Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps and Zosia Mamet.
After the huge success of Sony Pictures Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” it’s clear there’s still an appetite for all things...

Chicago – Any good reader of HollywoodChicago.com knows that we have a soft spot for modern British television. “Torchwood,” “Doctor Who,” “Primeval,” “Robin Hood,” “Ashes to Ashes,” and many more shows range from good to great. One of the best series of the ’00s is the excellent “Life on Mars,” soon-to-be available in a series 1 DVD box set and accompanied on store shelves this month by the sixth volume of the thrilling “Wire in the Blood”.
DVD Rating: 5.0/5.0 The spectacular “Life on Mars” was adapted into an ill-fated ABC remake last fall and I worry that American audiences will ignore the original because they see the remake as a failure (which is itself debatable). Whether or not you liked or disliked the Yank version, please check out the BBC original, a great twist on the standard police procedural.
Life on Mars will be released on DVD on July 28th, 2009.
