Samsung has reportedly lost its top-ranking media executive, John Pleasants -- who formerly served as the company’s Evp of media solutions in San Francisco. Variety, which first reported Pleasants’ departure, says that he is being replaced by Samsung’s Yoon C. Lee, an Svp at the company.
Samsung declined to comment on the executive shakeup, but told Variety in a statement that “we will continue to evolve our strategy and are committed to making investments focused on delivering the next generation of content and services that span our line of Galaxy devices.”

Once you’re absorbed by its terror, you can’t even scream. The slimy mass that is the Blob first thrilled audiences when it took on Steve McQueen on the big screen in 1958. It next oozed into cinemas via the 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob, before being reborn in a 1988 remake directed by Chuck Russell and co-written by Frank Darabont. Proving that it’s still a relentless alien amoeba, 1958’s The Blob is being remade once again.
Goldcrest Films is moving forward with a remake of The Blob, with Simon West (The Expendables 2, Con Air) lined up for the director’s chair and shooting slated to begin this summer. Modern-day special effects capabilities are expected to bring the Blob to life like never before, and Chris Haney (Avatar, Avengers Assemble) will oversee the VFX in post-production.

If Alice F. Lee didn’t happen to be Nelle Harper Lee’s sister, lawyer, and roommate, the AP might not have run an obituary on the occasion of her death on Monday at the age of 103. But one of the most remarkable things about Alice is that the AP's piece hardly mentioned Harper Lee. Alice retired from the law firm she had inherited from her father, A.C. Lee (the model for To Kill a Mockingbird’s Atticus Finch), at the age of 100, which made her Alabama’s oldest working attorney at the time. She was such an important part of the Southern Methodist Church (where she quietly led its move away from institutional racism) that there’s an award named for her. She was a community pioneer, a generous advocate of equality and justice, and a guardian of collective memory. She was also the protector — and, more important,...

HuffPost Food's relationship with the whole "Gangnam-style" trend is probably a lot like most others' relationship with the social phenomenon inspired by Psy's wildly popular music video. We thought it was amusing at first, but around the time a group of Whole Foods employees jumped on the bandwagon, the thought of another imitator started to make us want to grab a stiff drink.
But it's almost as if the trend were a living entity with the ability sense that desire. Because Russian company Woobo International reportedly plans to use the phrase "Oppah, Gangnam-Style" to promote a brand of vodka. The company registered the trademark "Gangnam-Style" with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office on Sept. 26 for use three categories: action figures, vegetable-based snack foods and alcoholic beverages besides beer.

Cars and airplanes may get tarred with a reputation as energy hogs, but the biggest culprits are buildings. Keeping our offices and homes lit, heated, and cooled accounts for a staggering 72% of electricity consumption and 38% of all carbon emissions in the U.S. That explains why green building is now more than just a trend -- it's becoming a requirement. At this year's World Architecture Festival, nearly all of the showcased projects were designed with sustainability in mind. For instance, New Zealand's Yellow Treehouse Restaurant was built halfway up a redwood with locally harvested wood beams. Eco-consciousness is adding a new layer to how we erect structures, says program director Paul Finch: "It's changing the way people fundamentally think about buildings" and how we regard environments -- not just the ones we construct but also those we disrupt in the process. -- Anne C. Most people bury the greeting cards they receive in drawers, but you can bury Garden Greetings in the backyard and watch them sprout into flowers or herbs. Embedded with seeds, the cards are "tree-free" -- instead, Botanical PaperWorks uses 3.5 tons of paper waste a year. The cards retail for $5 apiece at specialty stores such as Paper Source.
"The next wave in eco-awareness is compostability," says VerTerra chief operating officer Josh Parker. VerTerra steams, heats, and pressurizes fallen palm leaves, processing 10 to 12 tons a month into high-end disposable dinnerware. Genetics, this is your mainstream moment! So says conference founder and biotech entrepreneur John Boyce, who points to the rapid drop in DNA-sequencing costs and growing interest in genomics from consumer-goods manufacturers. Boyce says this inaugural show will focus on "the intersection of genetics and the consumer front." Expect to see reps from P&G, Unilever, and insurance companies mingling with researchers including ex -- Human Genome Project chief Francis Collins and Alzheimer's-focused neurologist Robert C. Green. The public can attend for just $15, but don't think that genetics comes that cheap: It still costs $5,000 to map your genome. -- Anne C. Lee
