In a changing of the self-titled comedy guard, TV Land announced on Tuesday (July 29) that it has given a series order to "The Gaffigan Show," while also confirming that "Kirstie" has been cancelled after only one season. The single-camera comedy has been ordered for 10 episodes and will shoot in New York, premiering in 2015. Based on Gaffigan's experiences balancing fatherhood, stand-up comedy and "an insatiable appetite," "The Gaffigan Show" has played an interesting version of network hopscotch. The project, created by Gaffigan and Peter Tolan, was developed and shot for CBS in 2013 and then redeveloped and shot this spring. Pound for pound, TV Land may be the best network out there. That’s sure to raise some eyebrows, but they know what they’re doing, what shows are going to work, and have a game plan that makes a lot of sense. Building off of the qualities they feel work for a certain demographic, they’ve capitalized on a new theory of series creation – rebooting shows from the ’80s and early ’90s that never existed in the first place.
Staying right in line with their idea that there are a lot of people who want to watch shows from bygone eras (even if we have to create them now), they are now launching a new version of Candid Camera. So far we only know that the show will hit in summer with a 10-episode order, which I imagine will almost immediately get expanded. Further details, like who might host,...

Classic hidden camera reality series Candid Camera is returning to television with a new incarnation at TV Land from the series’ long-time host, Peter Funt, son of creator and original host Allen Funt, and Electus‘ Ben Silverman. The cable network has ordered 10 episodes to air this summer. “The show is full of joyful laughter that catches you off guard and leaves you in high spirits — exactly the outlook that our brand embodies,” TV Land president Larry W. Jones said. With its signature catch phrase, “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera!”, Candid Camera introduced the hidden camera concept to television in 1948, and the series continued in several iterations over the course of more than 50 years. Silverman, a fan of the original show, tracked down the format to Wme and partnered with Funt to develop a new version. The project landed at TV Land, which had been looking for comedic reality ideas.

And, 60 years from now, when a future generation is watching on their glasses a live broadcast of some happy-zombie-family comedy starring some Hollywood It Couple, replete with product promotions by the happy zombies, they will think back to today’s Nyt report (“Commercials to Go Live With Show Cast Members”) about the airing of two whole live ads during the live season debuts of TV Land‘s Hot In Cleveland and The Soul Man, and think “How quaint.” The cast of Hot In Cleveland — Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves,...

The original programming on TV Land is something of a mixed bag, but it’s an assortment with a common theme, and one that makes a lot of sense. There’s a mid-80s-early-90s throwback feel about all of their shows, though most of them try to give their comedy a nudge into the new era, and The Exes is one of the best examples of the overall attempt.
The ratings have certainly shown that they’ve got their hands on a good theory, and the fact that other networks are kicking out shows that are clearly from the same mold (with some success) further proves that there is a market.
Well, if The Exes is on your list of faves, you’ve got some good news. The show is coming back for at least 12 more episodes.
Catch all the info below, and let me know what you think of the show.

Season 3 also has featured Leah Remini in a heavily recurring role. “From the moment we read the very first script for The Exes, we fell in love,” said TV Land President Larry W. Jones. “This series has a comedy ensemble that’s a force to be reckoned with, and it just keeps getting better and better.”...

I was never a huge fan of My Name Is Earl, despite being a big fan of most everyone involved, and Jaime Pressly has always been one of my favorites… for reasons that, to be completely honest, I don’t really understand. I couldn’t get behind I Hate My Teenage Daughter, but she almost made it work. With the right material, she has the charm and comedic timing to pull audiences in. Considering TV Land‘s solid record so far, this may be one to really watch out for.
That said, and considering TV Land‘s obvious bent toward the styles and sensibilities of sit-coms from 20-30 years ago, this one sounds like it could easily go too far toward the silly, milking cheap laughs at every turn (a la Mom). It will be interesting to see how the cast rounds out, but for now we have something to look forward to.

Exclusive: TV Land‘s The Soul Man will return for a third season. The network has given the 8-episode order more than three months after Season 2 of the show, starring Cedric “The Entertainer,” Niecy Nash and Wesley Jonathan, ended its run. Comedy veteran Ric Swartzlander (Cougar Town), who quietly joined the show at the beginning of Season 2, will be back as showrunner. Like with the second season pickup, I hear a key renewal factor was the show’s strong showing among Black viewers. Over the first two seasons, The Soul Man averaged a potent 3.7 rating among African-American Women 25-54 and a 3.0 rating with African-American Adults 25-54. Season 2 of the series posted gains of +103% among A25-54 and +111% among W25-54 (L+7) versus channel prime average. “We’re so proud to have this show in our portfolio of sitcoms,” said TV Land president Larry W. Jones. “Fans of The Soul Man...

The sitcom, starring Betty White, will air 24 episodes in its fifth season, enough to get it past the 100 episode mark. "This is an incredible milestone for the show and for TV Land," Larry W. Jones, TV Land president, said in a statement. "To have our first scripted sitcom make it to the syndication level is a huge accomplishment. We have a brilliant creative team both in front of and behind the camera. Kirstie Alley has a new show! Fittingly, it's called "Kirstie's New Show."
The "Dancing With The Stars" alum has found a new home on TV Land. On the sitcom, she'll play Broadway star Madison Banks. Also starring will be Rhea Perlman, her former "Cheers" co-star, "Seinfeld's" Michael Richards, and Broadway's Eric Petersen.
