Former Major League Baseball manager. Managed the Boston Red Sox,
Oakland A's, California Angels, Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, and
Seattle Mariners.
Outfielder/Third Baseman/First Baseman for Brooklyn Dodgers (1951-1954
and 1956), Baltimore Orioles (1956-1958 and 1961-1962), Cleveland Indians
(1957), Kansas City Athletics (1959-1960) and Boston Red Sox
(1963-1964).
Made major league debut on 10 June 1951.
Led the Oakland A's to two of their three consecutive World Series
titles in 1972 and 1973.
Manager of the American League's Boston Red Sox (1967-1969[start]) and
Seattle Mariners (1986[end]-1988[start]); and the National League's
Montreal Expos (1977-1981[start]) and San Diego Padres
(1982-1985).
Managed the Boston Red Sox to their "Impossible Dream" American League
pennant in 1967. Lost in World Series to the St. Louis
Cardinals.
Inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.
Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008 (election by the Veterans Committee announced in December 2007).
Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee (4 December 2007).
