Even if the script is sometimes heavy-handed, Bloom is an unrecognisable force as a survivor of church sexual abuse
Orlando Bloom has often looked perfectly happy with a Hollywood career, starring in movies as opposed to necessarily acting in them. But he outdoes himself in this British indie drama playing a man traumatised by childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a Catholic priest. There’s a kind of blunt brute force to his performance – and he looks almost unrecognisable, as if he’s using certain muscles in his face for the first time.
The film is a horror story: a disturbing, hard-to-watch ordeal with a lacerating script by Geoff Thompson, a sexual-abuse survivor who has written courageously about his own experience. Bloom is Malcolm, known to everyone as Malky, a nickname that doesn’t remotely suit him. He swaggers about full of rage, flying into a temper if anyone...

What if you were an international star who’d had a supporting role in two of the biggest franchises of all time, then you went on to deliver the best performance of your career in a tough, tiny British drama, and hardly anybody noticed? Chances are, Orlando Bloom has been asking himself some version of that question for the last three years.
That’s how long it’s been since he played Malky, a lapsed Catholic tormented by childhood sexual abuse, in “Retaliation,” a remarkably nuanced alternative to the grudge-bearing revenge genre from a pair of first-time feature directors, siblings Ludwig and Paul Shammasian. “Retaliation” was virtually overlooked when it premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival back in 2017, landing distribution in a few foreign countries (presumably on the basis of Bloom’s involvement), only to surface now as one of the many pandemic releases so micro, they may as well not exist.

There have been many narrative techniques used over the course of cinema’s history. Some of the more unique ones involve non-linear storytelling, popularised by Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. An uncommon technique, however, is that of the single situation movie, where the characters are kept in one location for the entirety of the film. Using this method, we have been treated to thrillers such as Rope (1948) and dramas like Carnage (2011), but the one thing they all had in common was that they included multiple characters interacting with one another, holding the audience’s attention through the use of conversations and conflict. But how would such a single location film work with just one actor? With one man delivering a 98-minute monologue about his career as a boxer, would the audience be bored, especially those who have no interest in the sport, or could this risky move work wonders?...

Screen Film Summit: UK producers and financiers talk finance.
Producer Elizabeth Karlsen, speaking at the Screen Film Summit in London on Monday, revealed how experience, long-time industry relationships and “googling” were crucial in pulling together the finance for Todd Haynes’ New York-set lesbian love story Carol.
An adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952, New York-set novel The Price of Salt, the film stars Cate Blanchett as a wealthy woman in a loveless marriage who falls for a young shop girl, played by Rooney Mara.
“It’s a period, lesbian love story and that has a certain price tag in the marketplace, even though we eventually got an A-list cast of Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara on board, and that’s around $15m,” said Karlsen.
“To shoot a period film in New York, you’re going to be hard pressed to do it for less than $25m.”

Sadly, the View Point Inn, a small historic building located in Portland, Oregon which served as the venue for the prom scene in Twilight, was destroyed by a fire on Sunday.
According to local Portland news site Katu.com, two Twilight fans who were visiting the site first caught sight of the blazes and subsequent efforts by Inn employees to douse the flames were unsuccessful.
One owner, Geoff Thompson, who had been struggling to keep the building conditioned in years past, stated, "I love the inn, but I can't do it by myself anymore . . .
