My recent trip to Montgomery, Alabama, wasn’t my first visit. I had previously explored the city and the sites associated with Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative (Eji) in 2019, in what turned out to be a pivotal moment — after Donald Trump’s ascent to power, but before the Covid-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill. It was also before the 2020 killing of George Floyd sparked widespread protests and a year of reconstruction.
I remember the world around me, even Trump’s presidency, making sense as I left the Legacy Museum,...

Sports and music representation powerhouse Wasserman has finalized its acquisition of Brillstein Entertainment Partners, the venerable Hollywood management and production company. Terms were not disclosed. Deadline exclusively revealed the acquisition talks back in February.
Wasserman chairman and CEO Casey Wasserman and Brillstein co-CEOs Cynthia Pett and Jon Liebman made the announcement. It puts Wasserman, grandson of the iconic Hollywood representative and studio chief Lew Wasserman, directly into the film and TV representation and production game for the first time. It is the second strategic alignment for Wasserman, who took over the lucrative music touring business that was once the most profitable part of the Paradigm agency, at a time when the pandemic grounded live touring revenues.
It would be the latest move in management after 3Arts made a deal with Lionsgate, and Range Media Partners linked with Automatik.
Wasserman, Pett and Liebman believe their cultures will mesh in their compatible business and staffs.

“Never confuse movement with progress. Because you can run in place and not get anywhere.”
Ariana DeBose, who earned a best supporting actress win at the Academy Awards last year for her role in “West Side Story,” used this iconic Denzel Washington quote to describe the current state of LGBTQ+ equality in Hollywood.
On Saturday night, the openly queer actor accepted the Visibility Award at the annual Human Rights Campaign gala in New York. Quiz: The Year in Swag. Can You Guess Which Studio Sent the Guitar? The Coffee Maker? The Barf Bag?!
Click here to read the full article.
One of the perks that does not come with being an awards editor? Extra storage space.
It’s a necessity, particularly in the late spring (ahead of the Emmy-qualifying premiere dates of buzzy new TV shows) and in the fall (as Oscar hopefuls begin industry screenings) when swag boxes start to pile up on my doorstep. Let’s face it: Awards season is, at this point, year-round; so, too, is Swag Season — and the gifts are seemingly endless, and of varying quality and ingenuity.
There are the personalized items, like the Levi’s denim jacket with a hot-pink “Tyler” embroidered on the front left pocket, courtesy of Peacock in its promotion of Angelyne, or the size-11 Air Jordans also sent by Peacock to promote Bel-Air (which arrived in a package with a Kehinde Wiley-designed basketball in a glass case). Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg formed their own two-person film club during the pandemic.
“During the lockdown he encouraged me and I encouraged him, we found movies we had never seen before and we let each other know what they were,” Spielberg said. “So the lockdown was literally spent watching movies, getting on text and talking for hours about the film. He knows more about films than Martin Scorsese.”
Spielberg’s remarks came after “The Shape of Water” director honored him Saturday night at Lacma’s 10th annual Art + Film Gala at Lacma.
Spielberg admitted he was anxious about being recognized by a museum because he has never called himself an “artist.”
“I never know what to feel when people refer to me as an ‘artist’ or call what I make ‘art’ because I don’t think I’ve ever referred to myself in that way,” the “West Side Story” director said.

It is 8 films wide from which (presumably) 5 nominees will emerge though remember in the Aughts when it was usually 4 nominees which is so annoying. (Symmetry please, Oscar). Among those 8 films we have a few about illness (The Lions Mouth Opens, Joanna, Our Curse), one about the arts (Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace) one environmental picture (White Earth) one picture Nathaniel will never be able to sit through because it's about slaughterhouses (The Reaper) which means he can't have a perfect Oscar record this year, and one about a natural disaster (One Child) which killed thousands but which focuses on three families.
