Vice President Kamala Harris plans to announce the creation of a United States AI Safety Institute in a speech on Wednesday as part of her visit to the UK for a summit on the safety of the emerging technology.
The Safety Institute, to be part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, will develop technical guidance for regulators considering action on issues such as authenticating human generated content and watermarking AI content, as well and efforts to stem algorithmic discrimination and to boost privacy standards. The institute also will create benchmarks and best practices for evaluating and mitigating AI risks.
Harris’s speech will be tied to the Global Summit on AI Safety, a two-day event at Bletchley Park that is expected to include world leaders and tech company executives. Among those expected to participate are Elon Musk and Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, as well as British...

Taylor Swift's "Reputation," released in 2017, is kind of two albums put together. On one half of the album, she takes swipes at people who betrayed her and proves, as she sings on "Look What You Made Me Do," that the "old Taylor" is "dead." On the other half, Swift sings about her early days of love with then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn (the pair split earlier in 2023). One of the songs in the second, romantic half is titled "Dress," and it's one of Swift's most sensual tracks. She sings on the chorus, "Say my name and everything just stops. / I don't want you like a best friend. / Only bought this dress so you could take it off."
Back when the song was released, and in part because of the "best friend" reference, some fans originally thought the song was about Swift's friend Ed Sheeran, but he clarified that it definitely wasn't...

There are many "Taylor's Version" tracks fans are looking forward to hearing when "Reputation (Taylor's Version)" is finally released, but one of the most anticipated has to be "Getaway Car." Taylor Swift wrote the track with her friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff; in fact, an iPhone video of them writing the bridge was featured in the 2020 documentary "Miss Americana" and became a meme in its own right. When Swift finally sang the song during the surprise set of her Eras tour in May, she brought out Antonoff to sing it with her (pictured), a sweet tribute to the song's genesis. But then there's the song itself, and who fans think it's about: namely, Swift's ex Tom Hiddleston.
The song's lyrics seem to not only reference Swift's relationship with Hiddleston - which made headlines in the summer and early fall of 2016 - but also her split from boyfriend Calvin Harris, who...

It’s often said that one of the greatest injustices of American movies is that Wendell B. Harris Jr. failed to become one of the legendary progenitors of the indie cinema renaissance of the late 1980s and early ’90s. Or, rather, that a craven industry failed him. While it’s certainly true that he and so many other Black filmmakers of his generation deserved more than they were given, Harris’s reputation needs nothing more than Chameleon Street to secure his place among the greats. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival, the film is a fleet, nimble, and knowingly slippery portrait of infamous con artist William Douglas Street Jr. (dazzlingly played by Harris), who at the height of his gamesmanship posed as a surgeon and, so legend has it, performed three dozen successful hysterectomies before being found out, and has spent large swaths of his...

Salemites should stop answering the door when they aren't expecting visitors.
People open their homes to unexpected visitors while clad only in a towel so often that it's become a tired soap trope.
And according to spoilers for Days of Our Lives during the week of 10-23-22, two people will discover visitors they hoped not to encounter when they receives knocks on their doors.
The bad news: According to the fall spoiler video that was released at Day of Days 2023, Theresa and Konstantin are in cahoots to cover up that Xander is VIctor's rightful heir, not Alex.
This terrible twist makes no sense. We know that while Theresa was reading the letter, Brady and Alex came in and they all went home. There was no time for Konstantin to get involved, yet the video contains a flashback of them reading it together.
Theresa also has no motive to change the letter,...

Sofia Coppola’s idiosyncratic 2003 film made a huge impression on the young Johny Pitts. Two decades on, the writer and artist revisits the movie and the people who made it to investigate its enduring appeal and place in the early millennium
If you’re a geriatric millennial, as I am, the news that Lost in Translation is 20 years old will probably make you feel, simply, geriatric. When you think about it, though, the plot feels its age. An overprivileged middle-aged man (grumpy about earning $2m for a week’s work in Japan) having an affair in a five-star hotel with an overprivileged woman half his age hardly screams Hollywood zeitgeist in 2023. Bill Murray is no longer the cool ironic choice for a younger generation, but a problematic old man, and when Lost in Translation was made, he was 52, feasibly old enough to be Scarlett Johansson’s grandfather; “Charlotte” is placed in her 20s,...

Clyde is back and already blackmailing Ava!
Our TV Fanatics, Jack and Christine, are joined by Andy from MyHourglass, a Days of Our Lives fan forum, to debate Sarah and Xander's custody battle, Abe's amnesia, Leo and Dimitri's future, and if Belle was right to tell off Talia.
And if Nicole learns that Eric is the father of her baby, will she tell him? See what our round table team has to say.
Clyde is back, and he's blackmailing Ava. What should Ava do about it?
Andy: Ava should go to Steve first and foremost, especially since Tripp has been threatened and already attacked. But she could also ask Harris or Rafe for help.
I have a feeling she’ll try to handle things herself at first, and it’ll get worse before it gets better.
Jack: Ava has So many choices here. She could pretend to go along...

They’re impossibly fast and strong. Their skin is pale-white and ice-cold. They travel in pairs and they’re at the epicenter of campy, creepy gay culture. No, we’re not talking about the vampires of “Twilight” or “Dicks: The Musical” writers/stars Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp.

Just when Tony Harris thought he had seen it all as an award-winning journalist, he began hosting The Proof Is Out There. Premiering in 2021, the History Channel series sees the host delve into everything from Bigfoot, UFOs, and sea monsters to alien carvings, phantom ships, and ancient artifacts. He works with a team of investigators and experts to analyze video footage and other findings to decipher if what’s presented is authentic and an unexplained phenomenon, or fake. In the midst of a string of all-new episodes, we caught up with Harris to preview what’s to come. What has the experience been like to see the show evolve over the four seasons? Tony Harris: It’s been great to see the show’s growth. When we started this thing, we weren’t sure where it would go or if it would be anything. I think what has happened is...

It looks like another stand-up comic has decided to expand on his stage persona and make the jump to a feature film. Of course, that’s nothing new as comedians have been doing this since the first filmed pratfall or wise-crack. Things are a bit more welcoming now as the onslaught of streaming services have put out a big “welcome mat” to the jokesters, raking in lots of new subscribers with taped comedy concerts, usually running about an hour or so, perfect for those needing a quick fix of laughter. It has worked for Kevin Hart and Amy Schumer, and Jo Koy’s autobiographical Easter Sunday certainly found an audience at the multiplex. Will the same happen to this touring comic who pushes against the current culture? Well, it’s going straight to streaming, which might be the perfect home for a trio of Old Dads.

Warning: This story contains spoilers for the Frasier revival on Paramount+
In 2004, “Frasier” bid farewell to audiences. But that didn’t stop Joe Cristalli (“Life in Pieces”) from pursuing a dream of writing for the NBC sitcom.
“I started a Twitter feed [called Frasier for Hire] that was all about getting a job to write on Frasier, which is obviously insane because the show had been off the air for 10 years,” Cristalli, who is now the co-creator, co-executive producer and co-showrunner for Paramount+’s revival, told TheWrap. “But I basically was just doing Frasier jokes, kind of like the Modern Seinfeld guy, just these are dialogue snippets of what would be on the show now. And I did that to no acclaim for like three years. I think I got somewhere in the ballpark of 2,000 followers.”
A door opened when star Kelsey Grammer revealed publicly that he was interested in doing a reboot of the show.

A24 has become a household name, even among general audiences, because of its penchant for finding unconventional stories that appeal to niche audiences. Many casual moviegoers have been frustrated by the patience required for the more substantial and less generic storytelling typically found within an A24 film, from recent entries like "The Green Knight" back to Jonathan Glazer's "Under the Skin." But when it comes to "Dicks: The Musical," the raunchy R-rated comedy from fresh-faced comedians and collaborators Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp and "Borat" director/"Seinfeld" executive producer Larry Charles, you pretty much get exactly what has been advertised in the movie's zany trailer.

Science fiction is a fascinating film genre. It inspires dreams of extraterrestrial life, futuristic gadgets, and space travel. Today, this all seems more plausible than ever. Yet, besides reflecting society, sci-fi helps us evaluate our actions -- and their consequences.
Creating scenes with nail-biting stunts requires a collaborative effort between actors and directors. Replacing stars with stunt performers due to their physical capabilities usually works but mishaps can still happen --- both on and off camera. The film industry has seen an increase in accidents over the last decade despite the advancement of technology. According to the Los Angeles Times, from 2010 to 2019, 19 fatal injuries occurred on American film sets. As attorney Chris Deacon told the outlet, "If those engaged to work on set in whatever capacity are dying at the hands of the creative process, then something is fundamentally wrong in the production processes."
Sure, authenticity makes for a thrilling watch.

Ever since Taylor Swift released "Reputation" in 2017, fans have been trying to unpack exactly who and what the songs are about. "Reputation" arrived during a particularly drama-filled moment in Swift's life; most notoriously, she was in the thick of her infamous feud with Kanye West and his then-wife Kim Kardashian, and it certainly seems like "Reputation" was her official statement on all that. There was also a lot going on in Swift's life in the love department, and the album also seems to trace the whirlwind early days of her romance with Joe Alwyn, whom she began dating in 2017 and split from in April 2023. Her relationships with Tom Hiddleston and Calvin Harris may have also gotten a few special mentions, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. With "Reputation," Swift had a lot to say - and she certainly did not hold back.

The 80s was a fun time for moviegoers. For a successful comedy, sometimes all you needed was a group of employees at a specific job, they butt up against whatever authority is in place, and get into hijinks. There is no better example of this than the recruits at the Police Academy. A group of misfits that are thrown together and given guns. The making of the film had its ups and downs but the whole thing ended up with a whole of laughs and creating a franchise that would spawn seven films, a TV series, and a Saturday morning cartoon. Let’s find out exactly what happened to Police Academy here on Wtf Happened To This Movie?

The creators of the “Frasier” revival didn’t just have to rewrite the opening jingle about tossed salads and scrambled eggs: They had to toss out the original premise.
“Frasier” on Paramount+ was originally supposed to follow the titular psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) and his brother, fellow therapist Niles (David Hyde Pierce), opening a theater together. However, after Pierce opted to not reprise his role for the revival, the series’ premise pivoted.
“For a long time, the idea was that Frasier and Niles were going to run a black-box theater, like how they bought that restaurant and brought it back to life,” series co-writer Joe Cristalli told Vulture. “But it’s hard for Frasier and Niles to run the theater when you don’t have Niles, so we had to step back from that.”
Co-creator Chris Harris added, “It would be weird to make Niles the new Maris,...

The latest season of Celebrity Name That Tune is in full swing, and TV Fanatic has another exclusive for you.
Steve-o and Rachael Harris appear in Tuesday's new episode of the competition series, and there's plenty to be excited about.
The pair are put on the spot when given a clue about Madonna and olive oil.
Steve-o is confident he can name the tune in nine notes, but Suits' Rachael goes one step further and says she can name it in two notes.
Yes, you read that right.
Two notes are difficult, but Harris aces the challenge when Randy Jackson plays them.
If you read the clue about olive oil and Madonna, there's a good chance you already had the correct song in your head by the time you even heard the notes.
It's... "Like a Virgin" is one of Madonna's biggest hits and a song that many people still...

Salem's in for yet another shock.
Days of Our Lives spoilers for the week of 10-16-23 suggest several surprises in store: two returns, one person mysteriously pulling away from his partner... and a surprising person seeking a divorce.
Let's hope that's a pipe dream (or someone's absurd fantasy).
First, the big casting news: Clyde and Lucas are back, at least for a while.
Only in Salem would the guards deal with Orpheus trying to negatively influence Lucas by rooming him with Clyde instead. But according to the spoiler video, Chad has to warn Lucas not to trust the drug-dealing villain with the Southern drawl.
There's no reason for Lucas to give Clyde the time of day. Didn't things get ugly between Clyde and Kate back in the day?
If anything, Lucas should want revenge since Clyde messed with his mother. So, how did these two become so friendly...

It’s been a tough week in the world, and that posed a difficult challenge for Bill Maher on his Real Time show on Friday. How do you conduct a show built on political comedy when the subject matter is so grim?
But Maher navigated the thorny issues with grace, finding the humor in throwbacks to old reliables like Kanye West and Donald Trump while keeping the focus on whatever solutions might be gleaned from his guests.
Maher made no secret of his allegiance, stating up front during his panel discussion that he believed Israel has the moral high ground in this conflict. That was challenged at times by James Kirchick, columnist for Tablet Magazine, writer-at-large for Air Mail, and author of Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington, and particularly Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy and former foreign policy advisor to Senator...

Before his death, Jimmy Buffett put his distinct spin on one of the most Buffett-esque songs Bob Dylan ever wrote, “Mozambique,” even enlisting Emmylou Harris — who sang backup on the original — to reprise her role. The cover will appear on the upcoming posthumous Buffett album, Equal Strain on All Parts, out Nov. 3.
Dylan’s original, off 1976’s Desire, is plenty jaunty and sun-soaked on its own, though not without some ramshackle touches. Buffett and Harris keep that original energy while smoothing out some of the edges, most notably substituting the...

The first two episodes of Frasier are now streaming on Paramount+. Beyond Kelsey Grammer as the titular character, there aren’t a lot of familiar faces in the sequel series. That will change as the season progresses, with both Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) and Roz (Peri Gilpin) set to make appearances, but might we see the return of any Og Cheers characters in Frasier?
Frasier showrunners Joe Cristalli and Chris Harris recently spoke with Variety about developing the new series and their position on bringing in characters from Cheers or Frasier beyond Lilith and Roz.
“It feels like maybe we haven’t earned that yet,” Cristalli said. “Any more than that in Season 1 probably would have been a bit too far. But like I can’t wait to bring back Bb Glaser or Gil or Bulldog. Niles, if he’ll do it, or Daphne. Anybody that wants to would be great.

In 2024, it will be 40 years since the character of Frasier Crane first debuted on TV. Appearing in the season 3 premiere of "Cheers" back in 1984, the character went on to become the protagonist of his own show, which ran from 1993 to 2004 and doubled down on Kelsey Grammer's remarkable knack for playing the lovably pretentious psychiatrist. Now, the character is once again back as part of the "Frasier" revival series that just hit Paramount+, and he's very much returned to his roots.
Whereas the original "Frasier" saw the titular psychiatrist return to his native Seattle, the new series is set back in Boston — home of the Cheers bar where his character first appeared. In the years between the original "Frasier" and this new series, the good doctor has been living in Chicago, but returns to Boston after his marriage ends and he feels compelled to become more involved in his son Freddy's (Jack Cutmore-Scott) life.

In Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot, Kelsey Grammer’s iconic character has returned to Boston for his next chapter, as he looks to reconnect with his son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).
The move finds the psychiatrist and former radio show host leave behind many beloved characters from the original NBC sitcom, including his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce). Earlier this year, Pierce revealed that he would not be reprising the role, which showrunners Chris Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Joe Cristalli (“Life in Pieces”) admitted was “a tough setback in the moment, but ultimately very freeing.”
“It let us build the show more organically from the ground up, focusing more on Frasier and Freddie’s relationship,” Harris told TheWrap. “The flip side of that is we don’t have several of the beloved characters that the original series had.”

Hopefully, The Spencer Sisters has found its rhythm because The Spencer Sisters Season 1 Episode 2 felt like it was the second part of a pilot episode.

The case of the week hit a little close to home when Victoria's friend Marlina found her fiance, Danny, dead in the pool.

Joe Cristalli and Chris Harris, the showrunners behind Paramount+’s “Frasier” revival, have been bracing for how audiences react to the return of the beloved sitcom character. But they weren’t expecting the buzz to be about Frasier Crane’s wardrobe.
When Paramount+ revealed the key art for the new “Frasier,” which premieres Oct. 12, fans were up in arms … because the character was wearing jeans and Allbirds sneakers. Sure, the dressed-down look might be out of step for the Frasier Crane we knew on “Cheers” or the original “Frasier.” But this is “Frasier” 3.0.
“We love that people care,” Harris says. “It’s partly the times and it is also a little bit about how the character is more comfortable with who he is and where he is in life.” Adds Cristalli: “He’s not going to wear Armani suits anymore. It’s 2023. This is what fancy rich guys wear now — they wear comfortable clothes!

It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.
Every true “Frasier” fan knows that kitchens are soundproof havens for covert plotting. Whenever Frasier, Martin, Niles, or Daphne needed the rest of the family to help them convince guests that they were Jewish, gay, married, single, or an entirely different person, they’d craft an excuse to sidebar in the kitchen. And despite the apartment’s open floor plan, nobody ever caught a peep of the screaming matches that ensued while plating Camembert.
So it’s fitting that the first episode of the new Paramount+ revival features plenty of kitchen scheming. When Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane attempts to reconnect with his adult son Freddy (now played by Jack Cutmore-Scott), an impromptu dinner party at his Boston apartment quickly devolves into a game of telephone.

During an appearance on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend web show, she said, “Yeah, they support [Trump] in the hood. At first, I don’t think people was fuckin’ with him. They thought he was racist, saying little shit against women. But once he started getting Black people out of jail and giving people that free money. Aww baby, we love Trump. Time flies, and doubly so in Salem.
No one does the rapidly aging into troubled teen soap opera trope better than Days, and on Days of Our Lives during the week of 10-09-23 we're getting Two new teens.
Yep, Tate's back from California, and his first order of business is to fall for a similarly-SORASed Holly Jonas.
What do these kids learn in boarding school? They always come back with a bad attitude and an eagerness to cause trouble.
Tate's no different, having been expelled for pulling a prank. (Neighbours' Yashvi Rebecchi could have told him a thing or two about that.)
According to the spoiler video, Tate immediately starts crushing on Holly Jonas, and her mother doesn't approve one bit!
Some viewers object to this potential pairing because Nicole and Brady were an item once upon a time and even ran away to Canada with baby Holly in defiance of the law.

Hey baby, do you hear the blues a-calling? We do! It’s been 30 years, but we still can’t get enough of “Frasier.” Luckily for us, there’s more “Frasier” on the horizon! Not many could have predicted that a “Cheers” spinoff about a lovably pompous psychiatrist unable to take his own advice would have been such a success, but it works, and more than that, it’s magic.
Part of the sitcom’s charm is that Frasier, as played by Kelsey Grammer, is routinely fallible. He’s pretentious, nitpicky, and status-obsessed, so we love to see him fall on his face. What’s unique about Frasier is that it’s never because of the fact he’s smart that he gets tripped up. It’s his pretention,...

Frasier is back.
Actually, Dr. Frasier Crane is so unobtrusively back in the Paramount+ revival debuting on October 12 that it’s truly as if Kelsey Grammer’s pompous and often hilarious psychiatrist character never left — truly.
In an industry awash with alternative timelines as plot points almost as much as it is with creatively barren reboots and reunions, perhaps it would be better to peg the Frasier revival not as something new at all, but neither something old. Perhaps a more crystalline perspective would be to view this Frasier as simply the charmingly chugging along 30th season of the beloved and acclaimed Cheers spinoff.
While clearly a subscriber lunge for Paramount+ in this age of streamer contractions, this 10-episode revival is indeed so blatantly a throwback to a very different era of television that to try to taint it as mere nostalgia is to miss the point. A little thinner on top,...

Based on Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp’s Off-Broadway show Fucking Identical Twins, Dicks: The Musical plays to the cheap seats from the get-go. This perverse riff on The Parent Trap—in which identical twins separated at birth, Craig (Sharp) and Trevor (Jackson), meet and try to reunite their gay father, Harris (Nathan Lane), with their agoraphobic, wheelchair-bound mother, Evelyn (Megan Mullally)—delights in breaking the rules of good taste. Yet its ceaseless reveling in the raunchy and depraved, including a queer, coke-snorting God (Bowen Yang) and a detached flying vagina, is all that Dicks has going for it.
Larry Charles’s film opens with something of a mission statement: sarcastic on-screen text declaring that Sharp and Jackson are gay and that their decision to play misogynistic straight dudes is incredibly brave. It’s a clear shot at the overt self-satisfaction of certain actors’ tendencies to inflate their own sense...

If you see one movie this year, make it “Dicks: The Musical,” if only because you genuinely won’t see anything else like it. What other movie can give you a “Parent Trap”-esque story of twins trying to get their parents back together that involves God in hot pants, twin-cest and Nathan Lane singing to a pair of “sewer boys”? Aspiring artist Emaza Gibson claims multi-platinum singer Jason Derulo lured her into what seemed like a dream recording deal in 2021. He then pressured her to party, made “explicit” demands for sex, aggressively berated her to the point she dissolved in tears and finally ghosted her because she spurned his advances, a new lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles alleges.
Gibson says she’s now suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Her complaint names Derulo’s manager, his Future History record label and Atlantic Records, another party to Gibson’s contract, as co-defendants.

Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. replaced Gen. Mark A. Milley on Friday and was sworn into the top military post in front of military personnel. The day was filled with ceremonial traditions and took place at Joint Base Meyer Henderson Hall in Virginia.
In Milley’s retirement speech on Friday he asserted that above all else, the job of the U.S. military is to be loyal to the Constitution. In reference to Trump, he said, “We don’t take an oath to a king, or a queen, to a tyrant or dictator or wannabe dictator.” He added that the troops did not risk their lives just to watch a “great experiment in democracy perish.”
President Joe Biden, accompanied by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Vice President Kamala Harris, praised the general for his reliable advice over the years, and his commitment to American democracy.
