Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning anime The Boy and the Heron floated to an easy second-weekend win at China’s theatrical box office, earning $12.8 million from Friday to Sunday, according to data from Artisan Gateway. The Studio Ghibli blockbuster has now earned $93.8 million in China, with local ticketing app Maoyan projecting that it will soon sail past the $100 million mark.
Miyazaki has previously suggested that The Boy and the Heron will be his last feature — but the 82-year-old anime legend has publicly retired twice before, only to eventually return to his drawing table. In any case, Studio Ghibli will continue to be a presence at China’s multiplexes. The fabled company has been steadily rereleasing Miyazaki’s back catalog over recent years. Next up is Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), scheduled for wide release in the country on April 30. Jack Ma’s Alibaba Pictures is also at work on creating an immersive Studio Ghibli exhibition in Shanghai.

Thompson was in the hype as fans were certain that the movie would hold the Golden Statue at the 2024 Oscars.

At the Oscars 2024, there was a big surprise when The Boy and the Heron, the last animated movie by Hayao Miyazaki, beat out the hyped-up Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. People were scratching their heads, wondering why. Some folks even got into arguments about what makes a movie worthy of an award.

Then, to make things even more interesting, Chris Hemsworth, the guy who plays Thor in the Marvel movies, showed up to collect the award for The Boy and the Heron. It got everyone wondering why he was there and the film’s journey to the Oscar win.

The night of The Academy Awards is finally here, and the accolades are being handed out to the nominee who has truly raised the bar in their nominated categories. Thus, many might not be surprised to know that Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated masterpiece, titled The Boy and the Heron, took home the Oscar for Best Animated Film.
A still from The Boy and the Heron
Many from the audience and fans of Studio Ghibli called this decision by The Academy to be one of the most deserving in recent years, and thus, the right choice. But there are also fans of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, the other frontrunner in the race to win this award, who believe that the film was wrongfully snubbed at the ceremony.

Composer Joe Hisaishi is the mastermind behind every film Hayao Miyazaki has directed at Studio Ghibli. So it was only natural the director would turn to his most trusted collaborator for his latest project, “The Boy and the Heron.”
Except this time, the duo did things differently. “I’m usually shown storyboards and memos, and we often discuss the film as the production is continuing,” Hisaishi says, speaking via a translator. Miyazaki showed him a film that was 95% complete, trusting Hisaishi to his process and leaving little to no notes.
What struck the composer was the film’s storyline. Mahito, a young 12-year-old boy is struggling to come to terms with his mother’s death. Shortly after, his father re-marries and is told his new stepmother is expecting a baby. When the family moves to a town, Mahito is forced to reckon with his new family and confront the anger and grief he feels.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Out of Darkness,” now playing in theaters.
About an hour into “Out of Darkness,” an Old Stone Age monster movie from first-time feature director Andrew Cumming, comes a shocking reveal: It’s not a monster movie at all.
The film, released in theaters Feb. 9, follows a tribe of people living on a desolate Scottish island 45,000 years ago who find themselves prey to a mysterious enemy that picks them off one by one. When 11-year-old Heron suddenly vanishes into the night, the tribe ventures into the forest to find him. Taking a page from “Jaws” and “Alien,” Cumming restrained himself from showing the antagonist until it became absolutely necessary, when it’s finally revealed that the menacing beast that’s hunting the tribe turns out to be human.
More specifically, it’s a pair of Neanderthals, who coexisted with Homo sapiens in Western Europe...

Between apocalyptic disaster films and cosmic terrors à la Lovecraft, the horror genre has the theoretical end of humanity pretty well covered. But what about its beginning?
In Andrew Cumming’s magnificent directorial debut “Out of Darkness,” the filmmaker reverses at full speed into the unknown with an imaginative and gruesome wilderness thriller tracking a group of nomads living 45,000 years ago. Part prehistoric “Prey,” part agnostic spin on The Book of Genesis, the film was written by Ruth Greenberg, and premiered under the more sci-fi sounding title “The Origin” at the BFI Film Festival in 2022. The moniker change is just the latest in a line of nuanced creative decisions that makes this ferocious 87-minute monster movie a testament to meticulous storytelling: a scrupulous feat made even more effective by the film’s use of Stone Age brutality and stark narrative simplicity.

Beginning with a rip-off of the (depending on who you ask) iconic Scott Free Productions logo––albeit with a rabbit instead of bird––I knew I was in for something deeply derivative with Out of Darkness. And perhaps that technically proficient-if-soulless feel that defines many of one Scott brother is what particularly shapes this new horror picture. It’s essentially a prehistoric slasher, the film’s opening taking place around a spooky campfire tale that, for one, makes clear its lineage back to the original Friday the 13th. Yet the stock butchered teenagers of that franchise were honestly preferable company to the muddy, grunting Before Common Era folk we’re stuck with.
Certainly there’s a heavier pall over this group, like pregnancy and the lineage, as we follow the family unit of leader Adem (Chuku Modu), doted-over son Heron (Luna Mwezi), and the bun-in-the-oven Ave (Iola Evans). Accompanying them...

As we’re now deep into the middle of the first quarter of the “cinema year” of 2024, here comes yet another horror thriller creeping into the multiplexes. And just what sets this one apart from the other “spook-taculars”? Well, it does concern a disparate group of chiller flick tropes all fighting for survival as their companions are picked off “one by one”. Not unique, but this one’s setting is very different. This story takes place on the desolate landscape of this planet over 45,000 years ago. And no, in case you’re wondering, CGI-created kajiu aren’t the culprits. But something strange and weird is roaming about, an entity or creature (perhaps plural) that’s stalking this group, then striking from Out Of Darkness.
We first meet this motley “tribe” huddled around a flickering fire surrounded by pitch black. A preteen lad named Heron (Luna Mwezi) pleads with his father...

I can almost imagine Out of Darkness’ director Andrew Cumming pitching the film to potential backers as Quest for Fire meets Predator. And that would be a fairly accurate description of this Stone Age thriller about a tribe of early humans being picked off by an unseen foe. And one that makes it sound a lot less cerebral and more commercial than it might otherwise appear.
45,000 years ago, six early humans have left their tribe to find a new home. Leading the group is Adem, who also has his young son Heron and Ave who’s carrying Adem’s child along with him. Also making the trek are Geirr, Adem’s more cautious second-in-command and Odal’s who seems to be some kind of shaman and last, and certainly least,...

The elemental tale of man versus nature is one that we’ve been telling since the days of cave paintings. The tale of man versus a big, scary creature has been one of that tradition’s most reliably entertaining iterations since the dawn of Hollywood, and Andrew Cumming’s Stone Age thriller Out of Darkness makes for a worthy addition.
The film is set 45,000 years ago. After making a daring journey across the sea, a small band of Stone Agers have arrived in an unfamiliar place that they hope to call home. Sadly, this place isn’t the land of milk, honey, and warm, cozy caves that they’d been dreaming of. Rather, it’s a gray and barren place where rough, rocky hills seem to roll out endlessly in all directions. It makes for a dispiriting landscape during the day, and it’s even worse when darkness falls and...

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. In the history of Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, only two sequels have ever won, and they were both from the “Toy Story” franchise: “Toy Story 3” (2010) and “Toy Story 4” (2019). Can “Across the Spider-Verse” achieve the same rare feat?

As much as people complain about Hollywood putting out the same things year after year, the fact remains that name recognition gets people into theater seats. Moreover, remakes and reboots give filmmakers an opportunity to retell beloved stories from a different perspectives. In this age of high-budgets and higher-expectations, reboots and remakes are among the only types of movies that major studios like to make these days.
So whether you’re feeling cynical about this year’s offerings or optimistic about the second swings filmmakers are taking, here are the biggest reboots and remakes coming in 2024.

English dubs for anime are a contentious thing. For many otakus, subbing out Japanese original audio for an English translation is defilement. Yet as anime has become more mainstream in America, the quality of dubs has shot up as well, and it's honestly not hard to find good ones these days (the English version of "Cowboy Bebop" is rightfully legendary).
Some of those quality dubs have been done for the films of anime's greatest genius: Hayao Miyazaki, founder of Studio Ghibli. When you're handling the work of a master, the incentive to do it right is all the more present. Some of those quality dubs have been done for the films of anime's greatest genius: Hayao Miyazaki, founder of Studio Ghibli. When you're handling the work of a master, the incentive to do it right is all the more present. Not every single Ghibli picture is a Miyazaki joint, to be clear, but the director and studio remain pretty synonymous.

This article contains spoilers for "The Boy and the Heron."
As a prolific director and one of the co-founders of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki has become one of the biggest names in animation around the world, possibly the best-known name outside of Walt Disney himself. But it's easy to forget about the other names behind Studio Ghibli.
Studio Ghibli was founded by Miyazaki, fellow director Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki in 1985. By that point, the two directors had already spent 20 years working together. First, they worked on the financially disappointing yet hugely influential "The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun," as well as on Nippon Animation shows like "Heidi, Girl of the Alps," and "3000 Leagues in Search of Mother." It is a partnership that created a powerhouse in animation, and one that is at the heart of Miyazaki's latest (but no longer last) movie, "The Boy and the Heron.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Michael Sinterniklaas, the voice director of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy And The Heron English dub revealed that he was initially skeptical about casting Robert Pattinson as Heron, as it was a role that was complicated and nuanced.
Despite recognizing Pattinson as a fine actor, Sinterniklaas felt that there was nothing in his body of work to suggest he could tackle such a challenging role.
However, Pattinson quickly dispelled any doubts during a visit to the studio in Los Angeles. Sinterniklaas recounted the moment when Pattinson confidently approached him, saying, “Ok, I’ve been thinking about this role and I recorded some stuff. Do you want to hear it?” Pattinson then played recordings from the Memos app on his iPhone, revealing a voice that perfectly captured the essence of the character.
This greatly impressed Sinterniklaas.
“Oh, bingo, you’ve already got the character,” the director exclaimed.

As the yin-yang decal on our yoga teacher’s Subaru Crosstrek reminds us thrice a week, every natural force or entity has its perfect mirror inverse. And so, just as during the summer we escaped to movie theaters in order to cool down from record high temps, the temperature extremes caused by climate collapse now drive us back to those same movie theaters for warmth, nursing our frigid tootsies at the hearth of the annual awards season dump of very exciting Don’t-Miss Indies. As the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzuki has worked with director Hayao Miyazaki on many films. With The Boy and the Heron, he was able to help bring Miyazaki’s semi-autobiographical fantasy story to life.
In his most personal work to date, Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron follows the story of a young boy named Mahito, who has recently lost his mother. Along with a cunning and deceptive gray heron, he journeys to a mysterious world outside of time where the dead and the living coexist. Suzuki says the core of the story had to change when Miyazaki’s mentor and friend, Isao Takahata, passed away. This led to a focus on the strange friendship between Mahito and the heron.

“The Boy and the Heron” marks the 14th collaboration between Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi. But even after almost four decades of working together, the animator and the composer are finding new ways to create new sounds. “The Boy and The Heron” is the story of Mahito (Soma Santoki), a young man who leaves the firebombing of Tokyo for the Japanese countryside in World War II, and then ends up guided by the titular Heron (Masaki Suda) to a completely different place in order to rescue his stepmother Natsuko (Yoshino Kimura) from the clutches of otherworldly forces. And also a lot of birds.
But parakeets hungry for human flesh aren’t the only novel thing about “The Boy and The Heron.” Hisaishi has in the past described his Studio Ghibli scores as a two years on, two years off cycle. When releasing the “Symphonic Celebration” Ghibli collection with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra,...

When Hayao Miyazaki pitched “The Boy and the Heron” to Studio Ghibli co-founder/producer Toshio Suzuki in 2016, he asked permission to make the story about himself. This took Suzuki — his friend of nearly 40 years at the time — by surprise; the legendary anime director isn’t known for getting so personal. And yet this aligned perfectly with the notion that Ghibli films are devoted to reliving memories.
“I agree that it is Miyazaki’s most personal film because he actually told me,” Suzuki told IndieWire over Zoom through an interpreter. Not only is “The Boy and the Heron” inspired by Miyazaki’s childhood (he endured the firebombing of Japan during World War II and his father was director of the family’s aircraft manufacturing factory), but also his career at Ghibli with his two closest friends: the late studio co-founder/director Isao Takahata (“Grave of the Fireflies”) and Suzuki.

Few jobs in the realm of voice acting are more coveted than an eponymous role in a new Hayao Miyazaki movie. And given how frequently the Studio Ghibli legend retires, a voice role in one of his features is the kind of opportunity that few actors will turn down. But Miyazaki’s penchant for creating elaborate fantasy worlds means that his films often require actors to make sounds for which there are no obvious points of reference. As it turns out, the 82-year-old director is well aware of the unique challenges that he sometimes poses to actors.
In a new conversation published by Entertainment Weekly, Japanese actor Masaki Suda recalled the unique experience of collaborating with Miyazaki on the auteur’s latest swan song, “The Boy and the Heron.” The actor revealed that Miyazaki apologized to him for the strange nature of his role, which saw him voicing an old...

It’s not a regular remake, it’s a cool remake: Paramount has shared the official trailer for their 2024 iteration of Mean Girls, out in theaters January 12th.
Like a set of pink-clad Russian dolls, this new Mean Girls film is adapted from the Broadway musical Mean Girls, which was adapted from Tina Fey’s 2004 comedy classic Mean Girls. Fey wrote the book for the stage version, which landed on Broadway in 2018, and is back as screenwriter for the 2024 film, too.
For the uninitiated: Mean Girls (2024) stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, whose notably Caucasian family has just moved back to the states after a stint in Africa. She befriends two fellow outcasts at her new high school, Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), and the three hatch a plan to take down the Plastics, an elite clique led by the infamous Regina George. It doesn’t go over so well.

Audiences at the Taylor Swift concert film already got a glimpse of a teaser for the new Mean Girls movie musical, and now Paramount is giving everyone else a chance: The studio released the first official trailer today.
Watch it above.
The film, based on the 2018 Broadway musical adaptation of the 2004 film, stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis ‘Imi’ike, Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Jaquel Spivey as Damian Hubbard, Avantika as Karen Shetty, Bebe Wood as Gretchen Wieners, Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels, Jenna Fischer as Ms. Heron, Busy Philipps as Mrs. George, Ashley Park as Madame Park, Tina Fey as Ms. Norbury, Tim Meadows as Mr. Duvall.
The trailer does a nice job of establishing the cliques of cool kids, outsiders and, of course, the mean girls. What it doesn’t really showcase, for some reason, are the musical numbers, so maybe that’ll come in the next trailer.

The exciting news comes just a few weeks before fans will celebrate the annual Mean Girls Day on October 3, a reference to the scene from the 2004 flick in which protagonist Cady Heron tells love interest Aaron Samuels what day it is. “It’s October 3rd,” she responds.
The star-studded project features Angourie Rice as Heron, originally played by Lindsay Lohan in 2004. She’s joined by Reneé Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Avantika, Mahi Alam, Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, Ashley Park, Connor Ratliff and Jon Hamm.

Cummings and Greenberg introduce this unique world and its characters around a campfire, establishing the merciless way of life and how it shapes its Stone Age inhabitants. Adem (Chuku Modu) is the Alpha male,...
