Universal International Studios has struck a deal with one of the hottest players in Spanish-language programming, Buendía Estudios.
Under the deal, the company, whose recent credits include the hit dramas “Cardo” and “Veneno,” will co-develop and co-produce Spanish-language series with Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group. Formed in 2020, Buendía Estudios is a joint venture between Atresmedia and Telefónica’s Movistar Plus, and incorporates the in-house player formerly known as Atresmedia Studios.
The company, which is led by CEO Ignacio Corrales, told Variety earlier this year that, in addition to producing for Spain and Latin America, it’s looking to develop projects from the region that are global-facing, in the vein of international Spanish-language triumphs like “Money Heist” and “Velvet.” A slate of around 40 projects across various genres and formats is currently in the works.

Never has Spanish TV drama production been so vibrant.
Over the past 12 months, “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) and “Elite” became global sensations via Netflix, building on the success of previous series that demonstrated a never-seen-before appetite for Spanish originals.
Netflix is opening the doors of its first European production hub in Madrid in early April and preparing five new Spanish Originals; Movistar + aims to produce 15 series a year; HBO and Amazon are increasing production.
Meanwhile, top free-to-air TV broadcasters Mediaset España and Atresmedia are re-inventing themselves as studios, producing content for third-party operators, and taking advantage of their production expertise.
The boom is opening up more ambitious and flexible business production models, such as co-production.
“Many of our projects, from inception, have co-production partners,” says Telefonica’s Movistar + president, Sergio Oslé. “It keeps us international from the get-go and helps us distribute, and also reach some scale and share know-how.

Atresmedia Studios, the newly launched production arm of Atresmedia, producer of iconic Spanish TV series such as “Velvet” and “Money Heist,” has appointed Laura Miñarro, one of Spain’s best known international TV execs, as V.P., international business.
Coming just months after Atresmedia Studios’ snagged Amazon Prime Video’s first fiction series order in Spain, to produce “Little Coincidences” with Spain’s MedioLimon and Onza Ent., the appointment signals Atresmedia Studios’ desire to intensify its drama series commissions outside Spain at a time of skyrocketing demand in the pay TV and streaming space for Spanish-language series and escalating competition to meet that demand.
Miñarro previously served as director of co-production and scripted at Swedish company Eccho Rights and before that, managing director of Imagina Intl. Sales (Iis), the overseas sales arm of Mediapro, one of Southern Europe’s biggest TV conglomerates, where she oversaw international distribution and co-production development.

Santiago De Compostela, Spain — One enveloping industry narrative dominated last week’s 2nd Conecta Fiction, Europe’s main TV co-production meet with Latin America: the build of the two regions’ TV sectors for an ever more streaming platform-driven world. Its biggest company presentations allowed an overview of how companies still have one foot in their core business, another in the future, which capitalizing on current opportunities. Multiple takeaways on that build, and touchstones of new scripted TV, from a now must-attend event for linking to Latin America:
1.Netflix
Netflix didn’t steal the show at Conecta Fiction, as at Annecy in animation a week earlier and at Series Mania, with Reed Hastings mingling with E.U. and French power-brokers. But in one way it didn’t need to: in the Latin American Svod space, by mid-2017 Netflix commanded a 96% market share among global services. The U.S. streaming giant still made,...

Lille, France — Lightning rarely strikes twice, but Alex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato most certainly have. Produced by Mediapro’s Globomedia for Atresmedia and, in its third season, Fox España, “Vis a Vis” (Locked Up), which Pina and Martinez Lobato co-created and co-wrote, is frequently singled out as one of Spain’s first free-to-air series to sport an undoubted cable-edge. Now, having launched their own shingle, Vancouver Media, 18 month ago, Martínez and Pina have made history with “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”). A free-to-air series made for Atresmedia, where its ratings were just so-so, it has famously been acquired by Netflix and gone on to be confirmed by the streaming giant in their first quarter results as Netflix’s most-watched non-English language series ever.

Madrid — Netflix fanboys – and fangirls – delight. After huge speculation, and anticipatory Tweets, Netflix has closed a deal with Spanish broadcast network Atresmedia for a new third part of “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist” in the U.S.).
Atresmedia’s Sonia Martínez and Vancouver Media’s Alex Pina, “La Casa de Papel’s” creator, produced the original series, broadcast in two parts last year in Spain.
After a licensing accord with Atresmedia, the new deal now sees Netflix and Vancouver Media produce “La Casa de Papel” Part 3, which will be released in exclusivity worldwide on Netflix.
Very little is known about its plot apart from that “the professor will plan new heists, revealed in 2019,” Netflix announced Wednesday morning. In its own press statement, Atresmedia confirmed that the new episodes will include much of the original key cast.
