After working on the special effects for The Descent and Attack the Block, it only made sense for Paul Hyett to direct his own monster movie. And once he boarded Howl, his second directed feature overall, Hyett made the considerable decision to remove most of the humor from Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler’s original script. The choice worked in the 2015 movie’s favor, because as inherently difficult as it is to make a werewolf movie, it’s even harder to pull off a scary horror-comedy. Playing everything straight not only helped Howl maintain a consistent tone, but also reminded viewers of why werewolves are so terrifying to begin with.
A dark and remote forest is a good place to find trouble, yet the characters in Howl believe themselves to be safe. Their late-night journey by train typically passes through a long stretch of wilderness without incident, though that sense...

It’s nearly that time of year again, my favourite time of year…..no not Halloween! I’m talking about Christmas! And despite its slightly unusual title Await Further Instructions is indeed a Christmas horror film.
Taking place over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day you might expect plenty of cheer but Await Further instructions isn’t the happiest of movies. For a start, the family aren’t the closest. In particular the son, played by Sam Gittins (Howl), who hasn’t seen his family for a number of years but his current girlfriend (Neerja Naik) pushes him to see them for the holiday so she can meet them. It doesn’t take long for her to regret this. His family aren’t exactly the nicest of people. The father...

We've got a trailer here's for a dark and twisted horror sci-fi thriller called Await Further Instructions that looks like it could be a fun and creepy movie. I'm not really familiar with anyone involved with the movie, but I like what I'm seeing in this first trailer.
"The story revolves around the Milgram family, who have gathered to celebrate Christmas, only to find a mysterious black substance has surrounded their house. Something monumental is clearly happening right outside their door, but what exactly – an industrial accident, a terrorist attack, nuclear war? Descending into terrified arguments, they turn on the television, desperate for any information. On screen, a message glows ominously: ‘Stay Indoors and Await Further Instructions...'"
The movie comes from director Johnny Kevorkian and it stars David Bradley, Neerja Naik, Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw), David Bradley (Game of Thrones), Sam Gittins (The Smoke), Holly Weston (Howl), Kris Saddler...

"Someone's locked us in." Dark Sky Films has debuted an official trailer for a freaky new sci-fi horror-thriller titled Await Further Instructions, made by filmmaker Johnny Kevorkian. The film's plot is about an argumentative family that gets together on Christmas. When they wake up on Christmas Day, they discover their house is covered with black material, and when they turn on the TV it says: "Stay Indoors and Await Further Instructions." That's a wicked cool idea for a horror film, something out of "Black Mirror" or "The Twilight Zone". Alas, this doesn't look as good as I'd hoped, a bit too weird, but I'm still very curious about it. The film's cast includes David Bradley, Abigail Cruttenden, Holly Weston, Sam Gittins, Grant Masters, Neerja Naik, and Kris Saddler. This is definitely worth a look, for that concept alone. Here's the first trailer (+ posters) for Johnny Kevorkian's Await Further Instructions, from...

As if the lineup for Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 wasn't impressive enough, the festival has added two films to its slate: David Barker's Pimped (touted as an erotic thriller with a touch of Hitchcock and Brian De Palma appeal) and screenings of the restoration of John Carpenter's classic Halloween! The guest lineup includes Barbara Crampton, Leigh Whannell, Shaked Berenson (Tales of Halloween), Issa López (Tigers are not Afraid), composer Fabio Frizzi, and many more!
Press Release: Two extra films have been added to the record-breaking 2018 line-up: Pimped is director David Barker’s modern transgressive erotic thriller, an Hitchcocktail of elevated suspense and shock in the revered style of Brian De Palma, And If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s Halloween on the big screen, now’s your best chance. The inclusion of this 4K restoration needs no explanation in anticipation of a new Michael Myers slasher being released in October.

In this round-up we have two exclusive excerpts from horror-thrillers. First up is Neil Gibson's graphic novel Twisted Dark Vol. 5, followed by Vaughn Entwistle's The Angel of Highgate. Also: five new images from Await Further Instructions.
Twisted Dark Volume Five: "Twisted Dark is a series of interconnected psychological thrillers, perfect for fans of twist endings and comics that reveal more on the second reading. Each story stands alone, but the more you read, the more connections you see between the characters. There are over 100 characters that appear more than once and one of the joys of reading is when you spot a reference that you know others will have missed. A rotating team of talented artists draw the stories, with each style offering something new."

Await Further Instructions, a darkly monstrous tale of tyranny and television, will start a five-week shoot on Oct 5 at Gsp Studios’ studio facilities in York. Kevorkian commented: “I want to create a pressure cooker atmosphere, which ultimately explodes on screen! By the end of the film we’ll be shooting mostly handheld, really ramping up the pace with lots of camera moves to create an unstoppable climax to match the extreme situation”.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident
Written by Vikram Weet
Directed by Renny Harlin
USA, 2013
The contest between scepticism and belief in the supernatural is a reliable means of drawing out a narrative before any sort of big reveal. It’s a dynamic through which the television classic The X-Files operated, featuring the passionate Fox Mulder, who worked to convince cohort Dana Scully of “the truth.” Around this back-and-forth between two audience surrogates situates the dubious involvement of man: how much do the higher-ups truly know about what is going on, and what are they keeping from us?
Renny Harlin’s The Dyatlov Pass Incident borrows a few of these tricks. Its fictional found-footage accompanies a group of five American hikers into the Ural Mountains as they retrace the steps of nine souls who died in mysterious, real-life circumstances some 50 years ago. Hypothermia, avalanches, and other possible causes of death have since been ruled out,...

Hollyoaks star Holly Weston has admitted that it is a relief to have a break from filming romantic scenes. The actress's character Ash Kane currently seems to be harbouring feelings for fellow student Will Savage (James Atherton), but she has been single for some time. Weston told The Sun: "I did a lot of kissing scenes when I started, like in the toilet with Riley. But I haven't had any romantic situations for a while. Maybe it is time for Ash to have another romance. "It is always a bit awkward. Ash (Holly Weston) is rushed to hospital after collapsing with meningitis next week, but it's her younger brother Callum (Laurie Duncan) who takes on most of the burden as Martha struggles to cope. Martha has had an alcohol problem for some time, but this only becomes apparent to viewers next week when Callum finds her slumped on the couch next to empty bottles of wine. Norris told TV Times: "Martha would die for her children, but she's like a child herself. Anything that requires her to step up and be a mother, she can't handle. "Nobody realised that [Ash] was ill. I just finished watching Splintered, a 2010 British horror flick that's recently received a spiffy DVD/Blu-ray combo pack release. Since it took up my whole morning, I want to do it justice. So let me see...what kind of movie is Splintered ?
Ah, I've got it. Splintered is a derivative, pedestrian thriller — but that's okay, because it's also tedious and predictable.
No, that's not quite right, but it's close. Let's dissect it to see if we can do a little better.
Full of tired ideas recycled from other better films, Splintered tells the tale of Sophie (Holly Weston), an eccentric coed who drags her friends deep into the Welsh woods in search of a local legendary creature that's either a werewolf or a fox. Since childhood, Sophie has...

Hollyoaks' Holly Weston has revealed that she gets invited to Madonna's birthday parties and once watched a screening of W.E. at the popstar's house. The actress, who plays Ash Kane in the soap, was in the first film Madonna directed - Filth and Wisdom - four years ago, and the pair have stayed in touch since. "I played a ballet dancer working as a stripper and pole-dancer," Weston told Ok. "It started off as a short film, but because Madonna really wanted to get into directing, the more we did on it, the more scenes she added, so eventually it became feature-length." Asked what it was like working with the icon, she said: "It was very strange, and quite scary, because it was my first lead role. I just did exactly as I was told! "She's very business-like - exactly (more)...

The pair are about to run into problems when Freshers' Week arrives at Hollyoaks Community College and Will makes some new friends, including rock chick Ash, played by Holly Weston. Porter told Inside Soap: "She notices his growing bond with Ash. Will says he'll go out with Theresa, but then he ends up getting drunk and partying with his new mates instead. The Last Exorcism (15)
(Daniel Stamm, 2010, Us) Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell. 87 mins
There's an epic, gothic Dennis Wheatley-style horror struggling to get out of this curiously lightweight mockumentary, in which a jaded Louisiana evangelical priest (Fabian) takes on a local case of possession to prove that demons only exist in the mind. Stamm orchestrates some good old-fashioned in-camera shocks, but the handheld format is limiting, and what ought to be a truly horrific climax ends in a tired Blair Witch fizzle rather than a bang.
Certified Copy (12A)
(Abbas Kiarostami, 2010, Fr/It/UK) Juliette Binoche, William Shimell, 107 mins
Slightly wooden but deceptively memorable meta romance, in which a woman (Binoche) meets a man (Shimell) who may or may not be her husband.
Dinner For Schmucks
(12A) (Jay Roach, 2010, Us) Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis. 114 mins
Rudd is an aspiring exec who takes Carell to his boss's who-can-bring-the-biggest-nerd dinner party.

One of headlining films at GrimmUpNorth was festival director Simeon Halligan's first feature: Splintered. The GrimmUpNorth horror festival itself was somewhat based around the release of this film, as the producers rented screens at the Printworks Odeon in Manchester as a means to publicise the film, while gathering other various titles to create a one-off festival that managed, as far as I'm concerned, to be a great success. Splintered screened on Saturday evening with a packed-out cinema of eager horror fans, and after a slight technical hitch the film played to great applause. The plot centers around a somewhat emo-ish teenager called Sophie (Holly Weston), who organises a trip to North Wales with her friends, and they drive off in search of a local legend.

I could be petty and pretentious, and say that I had essentially written off Filth and Wisdom as soon as I had heard it was the first feature directed by Madonna, an artist not known for turning in good work when she’s merely acting in a movie. I could be trivial, and say that it was when I saw that there was a typo in the film summary on the back of the box. But in all honesty, it was probably the moment when our lead character, A.K. (Eugene Hutz) states that filth and wisdom are two sides of the same coin, then flips a coin into the air, which the camera indulgently lingers on long after the point has been made. The idea struck me immediately as a dubious one, and the following 84 minutes did nothing to change that.

Chicago – I love IFC Films. They release such a diverse, interesting slate of films every year that one never quite knows what they’re going to get with each individual offering. Five recent IFC titles are the subject of the latest DVD Round-Up, our regular column drawing attention to titles that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Titles in this very arthouse edition of the Round-Up include a stylish horror film called “Nightmare,” a twisted thriller called “Pvc-1,” a puzzle of a story known as “Fermat’s Room,” an Icelandic movie called “White Night Wedding,” and an odd flick directed by Madonna known as “Filth and Wisdom”. Art film fans should check them all out. Keep IFC going as strongly as they have lately. But if you need more information, official synopsis, cast, and tech details follow.

In show business there are two kinds of performers: the kind that pursue and the kind that get pursued. Eugene Hütz is that rare specimen who's so larger-than-life, so magnetic and effortlessly cool, that the world all but demands he enters the spotlight. It's his birthright. The mustached Ukrainian is best known as the visionary front man to gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello. But, for first-time directors Liev Schreiber, who cast Hütz in Everything Is Illuminated after a music meeting, and Madonna, who wrote the part in Filth and Wisdom (opening Oct. 31) specifically for Hütz, he is a silver-screen savior."Always people were saying this," recalls Hütz. "Whenever the stirring of things was needed, people seem to force me on stage or in the school or in any other social environment, in party. But that's simply because I came from a family of eccentric characters like that already. [When] I moved to New York,...

Filth And Wisdom
Zero Stars
Guess who gets custody of the directing talent?
Given Madonna's utter failure to master acting in a lengthy screen career that's included such legendary bombs as "Shanghai Surprise" and "Swept Away," it's not exactly surprising that her directing debut, "Filth and Wisdom," is thoroughly inept in just about every aspect.
Madge's idea of pushing the envelope seems stuck somewhere in the early 1980s, when the idea of a male dominatrix (annoying Ukranian singer Eugene Hutz) and a pole dancer (Holly Weston) might seem remotely shocking.

Release Date: Oct. 17
Director: Madonna
Writers: Madonna, Dan Cadan
Cinematographer: Tim Maurice-Jones
Starring: Eugene Hutz, Holly Weston, Vicky McClure, Richard E. Grant
Studio/Run Time: IFC, 81 mins.
Crisply written, maturely mild sex comedy from the one-time Material Girl
Madonna’s directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, contains the expected: strippers, light S&M, erotic poetry.
