Executive producer Steve Cohen has worked with Billy Joel for decades, and if there’s one thing he knows about the legendary musician it’s that Joel is quite reluctant to perform on camera. But the New York native made an exception for a historic milestone in his monthly residency at Madison Square Garden. To celebrate the 100th consecutive sellout at the world’s most famous arena, Cohen and Joel decided to commemorate the occasion with a special event on CBS, “The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden,” the first concert film for Joel since 2010’s “Last Play at Shea.”
“I’m an old school guy, I remember appointment television on Sunday evening and Billy’s the same,” Cohen tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Making of “The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden” roundtable panel. So the choice was made to...

Things have begun to pick up at the summer box office, and three new wide releases will try to keep things rolling along. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big movie this weekend is the latest from director John Krasinski, once again teaming with Paramount Pictures for his family film “If,” starring Ryan Reynolds. “If” stands for “Imaginary Friends” – not to be confused with the recent horror movie “Imaginary” – although this is a family-friendly version of the same general concept, about a little girl named Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) who begins working with Reynold’s character to help pair IFs who have been abandoned by their childhood friends with new kids.
Following his run on “The Office” and directing a couple of indies, Krasinski directed “A Quiet Place” for Paramount in 2018, which opened with $50.2 million and went onto gross $188 million domestic and $334 million globally, based on a $17 million budget.

[Warning: The following story contains spoilers about Season 1 of “Fallout.”]
When viewers first meet Lucy (Ella Purnell) in the “Fallout” series premiere, the Vault 33 dweller is applying for an arranged marriage. She is kind, sweet, charming, optimistic, a Golden Rule abider — and quite naive. Vault life is all she knows, and all she’s been told is that it is every vault dweller’s duty to get married and procreate.
“It’s this Vault-Tec propaganda of, ‘One day, we are gonna rebuild America.’ It’s more cult-y than that,” Purnell tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I do think you do see moments with Lucy maybe doubting that in the first episode. It’s something me and [executive producer and director] Jonah [Nolan] talked about a lot, and it was really important to him and to me as well that we mapped in those little moments of fear before she gets married and then certainly moments after she gets married … where...

Last week, host/producer Jeff Probst broke the internet when he announced that Season 50 of “Survivor” would welcome back returning players. For clarity’s sake, the last time former castaways came back to the island was in Season 40 for “Winners at War,” so this news was a long time coming for fans. But with “Survivor 50” not expected to film until Spring 2025 (and air in early 2026), what does that mean for the upcoming 47th, 48th and 49th installments of CBS’s reality TV show? Will they feature all-new faces or returning contestants, or perhaps a mix of both?
“I would say, generally speaking, probably new players,” Probst told Gold Derby on the red carpet at the CBS New Fall Schedule Party at Paramount Studios on Thursday, May 2. “I mean, that’s the idea. Let’s make 50 that’s the first time that we bring people back so we can really lean...

The year in music keeps heating up. Following new albums from the likes of Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Vampire Weekend and Taylor Swift, now Billie Eilish is throwing her hat back in the ring with her third studio album. She has announced that “Hit Me Hard and Soft” will be released on May 17. Watch the mysterious announcement video above.
Her first album made history. 2019’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” was the number-one album of the year on the Billboard 200. Then it swept the Grammys in 2020, claiming Album of the Year, Record and Song of the Year (both for “Bad Guy”) and Best New Artist. That made Eilish the youngest Album of the Year winner in history at just 18 years old. She also became the third artist to win all four of those categories, following Christopher Cross and Adele, and she was just the second artist to...

Robert Oppenheimer. This marks Downey’s first career Oscars win; he was previously nominated for “Chaplin” and “Tropic Thunder”.

“Outlander” fans were out in force last weekend, congregating down under in Sydney and Melbourne for Hublander: A Visit to the Highlands, a first-of-its-kind convention for the TV blockbuster, featuring an hour-long Q&a with star Sam Heughan and hilarious hour-long chats with co-stars Duncan Lacroix, John Bell and Charles Vandervaart.
Gold Derby attended the event and was the only media outlet with exclusive one-on-one access to the show’s leading man backstage. “Good to see you guys, in person and not on Zoom! Emma Stone won her second Best Actress BAFTA award on Sunday for Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “Poor Things,” which she also produced. If you’re hoping for drama at this year’s Academy Awards, we suggest looking somewhere other than the Best Director race. Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts from major media outlets unanimously predict that there’s a “near zero” chance Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”) won’t be taking home this trophy. The filmmaker has already claimed precursor prizes at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, and is also the favorite at the upcoming BAFTAs and DGA Awards.
For the record, Nolan’s fellow nominees in the director category are Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Not making an appearance in this race is Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), who was shockingly snubbed on nominations morning — though she is nominated as a screenwriter.

When Jeff Probst declared at the start of “Survivor” Season 41 that the “New Era” could best be described as, “Drop the 4, keep the 1,” he wasn’t kidding. It’s clear the host/producer envisions the revamped version of the reality TV show that takes place post-Covid and with more representation as a fresh start. That’s likely why we haven’t had any players from the first 40 seasons pop up on our TV screens in a long while.
If Probst’s thinking is that the “New Era” will emulate the “Old School” days of “Survivor,” then that means we may not see an “All-Stars” version until Season 48. Remember, Season 8 was the first-ever installment that featured past players. So might Probst soon be telling a group of returning fan-favorites to “Drop the 4, keep the 8”? Or maybe he’s waiting for Season 50 — after all, that’s quite an impressive milestone.

As soon as the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were unveiled, our forum posters wasted no time voicing their brutally honest opinions regarding which performances were recognized and ignored. On the television side, our regular users (many of whom are industry insiders shielded by clever screen names) celebrated the inclusion of Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), and the cast of “The Gilded Age” while heavily lamenting the snubs of Bomer’s cast mate, Jonathan Bailey, Jeremy Strong (“Succession”), and Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”).
Below is just a sampling of our readers’ unabashed reactions to the SAG Award nominees in nine TV categories. Take a look, then join in if you’re brave enough. The film and TV winners will be revealed live on Netflix on February 24. Gold Derby’s predictions center is open, so make your first picks right now.

If it seems like Lily Gladstone is winning Best Actress prizes for her acclaimed performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” multiple times per week, that’s because it’s true. Since the New York Film Critics Circle announced Gladstone as the group’s Best Actress prizewinner on November 30, the 37-year-old star has been awarded Best Actress by the National Board of Review, Boston Society of Film Critics, and Chicago Film Critics Association, and earned Best Actress nominations from the Golden Globe Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards.
“It feels like a lot,” Gladstone tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview when asked about her early success during awards season. “It’s really exciting. It’s been a little bit rapid-fire this last week, so I kind of have been joking that I get this news and I intellectualize it and I know it’s going to be waiting down...

“MasterChef Junior” is home for the holidays! In this all-new two-night event, Gordon Ramsay welcomes nine young culinary contestants to cook up seasonal delights themed to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year and more. Joining as judges are his daughter Tilly Ramsay, Aarón Sánchez and Daphne Oz. Gold Derby caught up with Gordon and Tilly on the set of the festive cooking competition. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“We’ve got the most fantastic kids,” Gordon promises. “They’re up against some incredible mystery box challenges and we arrive on a sled. Lot’s of snowball fights! But the most exciting thing is that they’re cooking out of these incredible mystery boxes, but elevating their dishes more than we ever expected. Tilly is no longer coming in as a little guest, she’s judging also this year! It’s been a pleasant nightmare.”

Sterling K. Brown is no stranger when it comes to great material. The three-time Emmy winner starred for six seasons on “This Is Us” and has appeared in acclaimed films like “Black Panther” and “Waves” during the last five years alone. But reading the script for “American Fiction” while traveling to Europe for a family vacation with his wife, actress Ryan Michelle Bathe, just hit differently, Brown tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview.
“I was reading the script. And I was like, ‘Ryan, this was really f–king good.’ And she was like, ‘Really?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah. It’s got Black people in it, and we are doing stuff that people don’t normally see Black people do – like just living life. And it’s got this wonderful satire that sort of talks about the fact that we don’t get a chance to see Black...

Cord Jefferson (‘American Fiction’): ‘I’m really happy people are coming in and enjoying themselves’
“American Fiction” has won over audiences around the world since its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Often literally: the debut film from writer and director Cord Jefferson has received multiple audience awards from major festivals, including top honors from Toronto attendees.
“From the very beginning, I wanted to make a movie that felt like it was a big-tent film – that it was inviting to a lot of different kinds of people. I didn’t want to make a movie that was for people in New York and Los Angeles,” Jefferson tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Film Directors panel. “I’m 41, and this is the most divided I’ve ever seen our nation, and, in many ways, the entire world. The only way we move past that reality is if we can find ways to sort...

This year’s slate of eight Best New Artist hopefuls at the Grammys is one of the strongest of the past decade, mixing big commercial names like Ice Spice and Noah Kahan with some of the most buzzworthy new musicians around like Fred Again, Victoria Monét and Gracie Abrams. Perhaps what stands out the most, though, is how much the category was shaken up when the nominations were revealed. What was thought to be a safe bet for Ice Spice has suddenly opened up into what’s one of the strongest categories in the general field this year.
A big part of that was the rise of Monét, whom many didn’t even consider a shoo-in for a nomination. Come Grammy nominations morning, though, she racked up a very impressive set of seven bids, including a sweep in the R&b field, a crucial Best Engineered Album nom, and what probably shocked people the most,...
