After the edgy crime comedy “The World Is Yours,” Romain Gavras is back with thriller “Athena.” Produced by Paris-based Iconoclast for Netflix, the ambitious, €15 million film (15 million) unfolds in the aftermath of the tragic killing of a young boy in what appears to be an act of police brutality. An all-out war sparks in an imaginary community called Athena. It’s the first French movie that Netflix is presenting in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
“Athena” tells the story of the boy’s three siblings, who are responding to the tragedy in different ways and clashing with one another. Gus Van Sant was in a reflective mood Wednesday night at the Arclight Hollywood premiere for his dark comedy-drama, “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.”
The director noted that it took him over 20 years to get the film made, dating back to the late Robin Williams telling him that he had optioned cartoonist John Callahan’s book of the same title while they were working on 1997s “Good Will Hunting.” Van Sant agreed to come on board because of his admiration for Callahan’s short, “I Think I was an Alcoholic.” He produced two “Don’t Worry” scripts before Williams died in 2014.
“The project kind of got filed into Sony’s system. I forgot about it, so I wasn’t waiting the whole time,” he admitted.

Rooney Mara has previously worked with Joaquin Phoenix on “Her” and the upcoming film “Mary Magdalene,” but it looks like she might reunite with the actor for Gus Van Sant’s upcoming drama “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.” According to Variety, Mara and Jonah Hill are in negotiations to co-star alongside Phoenix in the biopic about cartoonist John Callahan.
Based on the artist’s 1989 autobiography of the same name, the film will tell story of how, at the age of 21, Callahan became paralyzed following a car accident and used drawing as a form of therapy. His work raised eyebrows for its depiction of taboo topics, which lead to controversy in his hometown of Portland. Before his death in 2010, his art was published in Playboy, the New Yorker and Penthouse. No details on Hill and Mara’s roles were revealed.
