“Anatomy of a Fall” is the clear favorite to win Best Original Screenplay this year but nominees “The Holdovers,” “Past Lives,” “Maestro,” and “May December” are all hoping to spoil the party. But is “Anatomy of a Fall’s” status as frontrunner as solid as it seems? It’s won a bunch of precursor awards, sure, but what about the academy?
What movies do they like best in this category? Let’s take a look at the last 10 winners of Best Original Screenplay to see what they can tell us about the academy’s tastes in this category, and how that affects “Anatomy of a Fall” and this year’s nominees.
As you can see, drama is the order of the day for academy voters. Five out of the last 10 winners here have been serious fare: Kenneth Branagh‘s “Belfast,” Emerald Fennell‘s “Promising Young Woman,” and Kenneth Lonergan‘s...

Bradley Cooper studied conducting for six years to perfect his role as Leonard Bernstein in his extraordinary biopic of the great US composer
Oscars 2024: best picture nominees – reviews, awards and where to watch
A film about a dark visionary who bestrode the 20th century and changed history might be the Oscar favourite, but there’s another biopic to consider, also of a man whose genius made him one of the past century’s greatest figures, one whose creativity and musical gifts brought – and continue to bring – joy to millions. A man who also changed the world, but unequivocally for the better. I’m talking about Leonard Bernstein, of course, and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, which looks at the great US conductor and composer through the lens of his marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
Maestro is an extraordinary achievement by any standards. Not only is Cooper totally convincing as...

Carey Mulligan has more than lived up to her promise. The English actor was an obvious, stand-out talent early in her career, whether she was playing one of the Bennett sisters in Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” adaptation or in an acclaimed one-episode appearance in BBC’s “Doctor Who.” When 2009 saw her receive a Best Actress nomination for her role in the acclaimed drama “An Education,” it seemed to mark the emergence of a great new young actor.
And since that breakthrough, Mulligan has only continued to go from strength to strength. An actor’s actor with the ability to fully embody the complicated women she’s often cast as, Mulligan consistently picks interesting, juicy parts, in films as varied as “Never Let Me Go,” “Drive,” “Shame,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” and “Mudbound.” As she’s gotten a little older and aged out of the young ingenue parts...

Before scoring three Oscar nominations this year for Netflix’s Maestro — including best picture, actor and original screenplay (the latter shared with Josh Singer) — Bradley Cooper had already garnered an impressive nine Academy Award nominations as an actor (Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, American Hustle in 2014, American Sniper in 2015 and A Star Is Born in 2019), a producer (American Sniper, A Star Is Born, Joker in 2020 and Nightmare Alley in 2022) and a writer (A Star Is Born). His latest crop of nods makes him a 12-time nominee across those three categories and one of the most successful multi-hyphenates working in film today.

Maestro (2023) is hailed among Bradley Cooper’s best works. He had been working for six years to prepare for the movie with sheer dedication, and expectedly, he captivated audiences with his performance. The film revolved around music, love, and more subjective themes and the complicated love life between music composer Leonard Bernstein, played by Cooper, and Felicia Montealegre, played by Carey Mulligan. Cooper co-wrote and directed apart from starring in the biographical romantic drama.

“Maestro” makeup artist Kazu Hiro misses Bradley Cooper’s Lenny. “This is the first show I felt like, ‘Oh, at the end of the filming, we can keep going. He was so fun.'”
For them, every shooting day began with hours in the chair as the two-time Oscar-winning makeup artist Hiro silently applied Cooper’s makeup that would allow him to portray 40 years of the composer-conductor’s colorful life.

And he asked me to do the makeup by myself. Usually we make a team, but he noticed that everybody has a different brain and eyes and hands. He needed space. That helped Bradley to focus and get ready for the film.”

Actress Carey Mulligan is upset for Greta Gerwig after she failed to be nominated for ‘Barbie’. The blockbuster live-action movie about the iconic Mattel doll became the biggest film of 2023, and given its deep message of female empowerment, it was a surprise when Margot Robbie’s (Barbie) co-star Ryan Gosling (Ken) received only nods for Best Supporting Actor and Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards, but both the leading lady and the film’s director missed out on a nomination.
“(It) is just the coolest thing. Because it’s from your peers. It’s wicked,” Mulligan said of being nominated herself for her role as Leonard Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre in the Netflix biopic “Maestro” in an interview with Britain’s The Times, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Carey Mulligan says actors who claim to stay above the race for awards are “100 percent lying.”
Mulligan is up for a best actress at this year’s Academy Awards, nominated for her performance as Felicia Montealegre in Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The nomination, she told The London Times, “is just the coolest thing. Because it’s from your peers. It’s wicked.”
Those who claim the recognition doesn’t matter, she says, are lying. She added that she’s especially “gutted” for Barbie director Greta Gerwig, who — to much public outcry — was not nominated for best director at this year’s Oscars.
“I’m gutted for Greta because I don’t know what else you can do as a director to get nominated,” Mulligan told the Times. “You make a critically acclaimed film that’s also an incredible global success, and yet you don’t get nominated?”

In terms of how many biographical performances they each include, the 2023 and 2024 acting Oscar lineups are staggeringly different. Whereas only two portrayals of real people (Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in “Elvis” and Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”) were recognized last year, a whopping 10 are presently nominated, constituting the highest such rate (50%) in five years. What’s more, this is only the third time in almost a century of Oscars history that real-life characters aren’t outnumbered by fictional ones.
This year’s near-record biographical performance rate ranks only behind the 60% ones of 2016 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, three of the four eventual winners in both previous cases belonged to those majorities. This includes leads Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and Olivia Colman as Queen Anne as well as supporting players Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley.

Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) — the conflicted “father of the atomic bomb” — nearly ran the field with cinematography, costume design, production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing, score, and sound. The only misfire was getting snubbed as a visual effects finalist (it did not compete for original song).
Following right behind with six noms were Best Picture nominees “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things.” Martin Scorsese’s epic historical drama about the Osage Nation murders in 1920s Oklahoma exceeded expectations. It was honored for cinematography, costume design, production design, editing (a record ninth nomination for three-time winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker), score (for the late Robbie Robertson), and, in a surprise, original song for “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” by Scott George.

Just a decade ago, who could have predicted the guy known primarily for “The Hangover” movies and TV shows like “Alias” would become a 12-time Oscar nominee? Bradley Cooper has had one of the strongest Academy Awards narratives since 2012, first being recognized for his starring role in “Silver Linings Playbook” and nominated again for his most recent trio of Oscars for producing, writing and acting in “Maestro” (2023). While all of those bids are wonderful, the fact remains that Cooper still has yet to win the little gold man. Could the 2024 Oscars be his year? Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of his Oscar nominations/losses to date.

“Oppenheimer,” a sprawling examination of the dawn of the Atomic Age, kicked off the race for the 96th Academy Awards on Tuesday, earning 13 nominations. It was followed closely behind by “Poor Things,” a feminist fantasy set in a steampunk world of mutants and male chauvinist pigs, which earned 11 nominations.
“Killers of the Flower Moon,” a historical crime drama about a vast conspiracy to rob the Osage Nation of its oil wealth, received 10 nominations. Both “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” drawn from painful chapters of American history, were recognized at a moment of political unrest and division in the country, which seemed to give their dark subject matter an added resonance.
“Barbie,” last year’s biggest box office hit, earned eight nominations — even as Greta Gerwig, the film’s director, and Margot Robbie, its star and producer, were both shut out. Released on the same weekend as “Oppenheimer,” the...

Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced before the sun came up in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, January 23 by Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid. Heading into the morning, Gold Derby’s 2024 Oscar predictions had “Oppenheimer” reaping an atomic 13 bids, which turned out to be true. Meanwhile, the other half of this summer’s “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, “Barbie,” was expected to garner 10 citations, but it had to settle with just eight. So how did your favorite films fare? Read on for our Oscar nominations report, broken down by film.
“Oppenheimer” – 13 nominations
Universal Pictures’ “Oppenheimer” stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, aka the father of the atomic bomb. It made a whopping $952 million worldwide, cementing its status as one of the most lucrative biopics in box office history. Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has long been considered “overdue” for an Oscar win after previously earning bids for writing “Memento” (2001), writing and producing “Inception...

Fresh and original led the way at Oscars 2023, as “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24) collected seven wins including Best Picture. This year’s frontrunner, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (Universal), a biopic of the theoretical physicist (Cillian Murphy), also feels inevitable on its way to a likely 13 nominations and a Best Picture win. So far the film has won the Drama Golden Globe and the Critics Choice Award for Best Film, among many other awards, and landed 13 BAFTA nominations and multiple Guild mentions including the PGA, DGA, and SAG Ensemble.
With “Oppenheimer,” Nolan delivered a serious but entertaining portrait of a man who must confront how he changed the world and not for the better. It could have been a treatise, it wasn’t, and delivered almost $1 billion at the global box office.
Nolan challenged his crew to create everything possible in front of the cameras and avoid digital VFX as much as possible.

When “Maestro” director, writer, and star Bradley Cooper wanted to meet with Carey Mulligan to talk about her joining his Leonard Bernstein biopic, it was “a quite dramatic” beginning.
Cooper, who wanted Mulligan to play Bernstein’s wife, Felicia, attended the first preview of her one-woman play “Girls and Boys.” During the show, being staged in New York’s West Village, a piece of wood fell and hit Mulligan’s head. It gave Mulligan a concussion, which she now downplays, calling it a curtain because “it sounds fluffy.”
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Cooper and Mulligan discuss the process of getting into the mindset to play the Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre in Netflix’s “Maestro.” The two break down key scenes, and talk about their favorite acting works from one another. Listen below.

“What’s remarkable is how lucky I have been to work with incredible directors,” “Maestro” screenwriter Josh Singer tells me, referring to such filmmakers as Tom McCarthy, Damien Chazelle (“First Man”), Steven Spielberg (“The Post”) and now Bradley Cooper. He notes how Cooper, the co-writer/director/actor/producer of “Maestro,” shares the same “uncompromising passion” as the other helmers, adding, “He likes to go deep, and he likes to work hard, and he likes to get it right, which is very much how I like to work.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Josh Singer takes a lot of notes. For an in-demand screenwriter like him that makes sense, but Singer’s latest project, Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro,” required even more copious files and neat notes. After all, Singer has been working on it for over a decade.
Over a recent Zoom interview with IndieWire, Singer narrated a little bit of his typical notes-finding experience: “Hold on, let me go into files. I’m going into my Bernstein file, which is very long, and then I’m going into, Ok, here: Essentially, in 2008 [producers] Fred Berner and Amy Durning approached the Bernstein family, and they wound up, over the next two years, negotiating life rights.”
This is just the start of the odyssey. By 2010, the producers started looking for a director. Sometime around 2013, they locked in Martin Scorsese to direct. Soon after, they came knocking at Singer’s door.

It was a good morning for “Barbenheimer.” “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” led the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for film. They received four noms apiece including best ensemble cast in a motion picture. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
In addition to the bid for its cast, “Oppenheimer” received a lead actor nom for Cillian Murphy as the title nuclear scientist, and supporting bids for Emily Blunt as his wife and Robert Downey Jr. as his senator nemesis. The film is coming off of five big wins at the Golden Globes including wins for Murphy and Downey.
In addition to the nom for “Barbie’s” cast, that blockbuster film was recognized for Margot Robbie‘s performance as the title character and Ryan Gosling‘s turn as her counterpart Ken. Perhaps surprisingly, the film also showed up in the race for best stunt ensemble.

Film historians will inevitably look back on 2023 as a year of risk-taking, with filmmakers turning to personal projects backed by major studios. On paper and in hindsight, a movie about the world’s most iconic doll sounds obvious, but it took real balls—or a lack thereof in Ken’s case—for Mattel and Warner Bros. to get behind a deconstructed look at the toy in Greta Gerwig’s existential Barbie. Universal arguably took an even bigger risk, putting their full force behind a three hour movie about the birth of the atomic bomb. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer proved perfect counter-programming to Gerwig’s Barbie, as moviegoers championed the double act into the summer box office unicorn Barbenheimer. Martin Scorsese brought his American Western crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon to the screen after seven years of development. Emerald Fennell debuted her second directorial effort, the darkly imaginative and highly divisive Saltburn.

Every year, there are always a few names who are in line for some awards glory after years of being the bridesmaids. Some of those names still haven’t had their moment, such as Glenn Close at the Oscars. But, this year, the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards could finally dish out some of those moments to some key names. We’re going to take a look at some of those names in just a tick but, first, a ground rule: we are only looking at people who have never won any type of SAG award, be that an individual gong or a Best Ensemble prize. There are some names this year who have won the latter but not the former, such as Bradley Cooper and Mark Ruffalo. We won’t be looking at those guys. Instead, we are looking at the pure SAG-free thespians. Here they are.

There is a video of a young Bradley Cooper asking a deeply thoughtful question to Robert De Niro about his process for the film “Awakenings.” He was among those studying at The Actors Studio Drama School who were the audience for “Inside The Actors Studio” hosted by the late James Lipton. Bradley would guest on the show in 2011.
Through the 2000s, Cooper had great stints in television with a lead role on the Fox sitcom “Kitchen Confidential” which was cancelled after one season and a regular role in J.J. Abram’s “Alias.” It wasn’t until 2009’s “The Hangover” that he got his big break. Todd Philip’s chaotic buddy comedy was a box office smash, making just shy of $500 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. It even won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy in 2011. This spawned two successful sequels that took the box office total for the trilogy to nearly 1.5 billion dollars.

In 2019, “A Star is Born” went into the Golden Globes as a heavy favorite to win multiple awards, including Best Drama Picture, Best Drama Actor for Bradley Cooper, and Best Drama Actress for Lady Gaga. However, come Golden Globes night, the film was snubbed in almost every category. “Bohemian Rhapsody” won both Best Drama and Best Drama Actor (for Rami Malek) while Glenn Close won Best Drama Actress for “The Wife.” The only Globe that “A Star is Born” managed to win was Best Original Song for “Shallow”.
Cooper starred in that movie as well as directed, produced, and co-wrote it (with Eric Roth and Will Fetters). He returns to the Globes arena this year with another movie he made as a multi-hyphenate: Netflix’s “Maestro.” This one is also a drama about music as it depicts the marriage between composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).

The current Oscar frontrunners for Best Actor and Best Actress according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users are Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”). However, they both face serious competition from the stars of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan. If the co-stars both win, “Maestro” would be the first film since “As Good As It Gets” to win both lead acting Oscars.

“Maestro” chronicles the decades-long relationship between conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and actress Felicia Montealegre (Mulligan). Their love story spans over 30 years from the time they met at a party in 1946 and continuing through their quarter-century marriage. But winning matching Oscars isn’t easy. Director Bradley Cooper describes “Maestro” as a series of movements through the life of the legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife, actress Felicia Montealegre. Precisely because the film seeks to chase a more emotional throughline, every aspect of the filmmaking has to evolve, too. The “Maestro” production team didn’t just need to capture a succession of time periods — although they did need to nail those time periods — they needed to visually dramatize the ever-changing dynamic between Lenny (Bradley Cooper) and Felicia (Carey Mulligan). If you’ll forgive the obvious metaphor, every department head had to move in concert with each other and with Cooper’s vision.

Bradley Cooper’s second directorial effort, “Maestro” — a biopic about Leonard Bernstein — has earned him rave reviews as both an actor and a director, including Golden Globe nominations for Best Drama Motion Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture. Cooper also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Josh Singer. One thing he wanted to make as authentic as possible was the late conductor’s relationship with his wife — played in the film by Carey Mulligan — and Cooper told us they did a lot of research into the Bernsteins’ relationship to get it just right. Bradley Cooper has gone from the star of “The Hangover” films to a nine-time Academy Award nominee. His career is something to marvel at but, at this moment in time, he belongs in the same group that is populated by the likes of Glenn Close and Peter O’Toole. Plenty of Oscar nominations… but zero wins.
That could change, finally, this year, however, with his musical masterpiece “Maestro,” which explores the marriage between Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein and Carey Mulligan‘s Felicia Montealegre. Both actors deliver powerhouse performances and are expected to pick up nominations for their lead roles, while Cooper could also receive notices for directing, writing, and producing the Netflix film. His best chance at a win, however, could well be for Best Actor, a category that previously looked like “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy might run away with. Now, Cooper is on the rise. Maestro begins as a beautiful love story between Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre, and then takes us on a melancholic journey through their tumultuous relationship thereafter. I suppose it’s more than just a love story; it’s a poignant tale of sacrifice and loyalty that prevented these two people from ever truly being happy together or apart. Bradley Cooper tries to dive deep into the musician’s intellectual crisis while making an artistic film that sometimes comes across as boring or simply a shell of something that could’ve been fantastic. It’s a 2-hour, 10-minute movie, and as a viewer at home, you really feel the runtime. The film goes from black and white to color, shifting from era to era, with the characters aging and seemingly growing apart. Technically, the film is quite a masterpiece, but it does seem a little less emotional than it intended to be.

Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress last year for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a dazzling fictional tale of a woman trying to save the multiverse. However, when we think of typical Best Actress winners, we do think of performers portraying real-life people. Sally Field in “Norma Rae” comes to mind, so, too, do Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich,” Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side,” and Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady.”
But is this an old-fashioned way of thinking? Or is it still a relevant metric with which to measure to potential Best Actress winners. Lily Gladstone portrays a real person in “Killers of the Flower Moon” but Emma Stone is the Oscar favorite for “Poor Things,” in which she plays a fictional character. So, let’s take a look a closer look at this category and what sort of roles Best Actress winners typically win for. Below is a...

Bradley Cooper‘s “Maestro” features one of the best cinematic sequences this year as Cooper, transformed into Leonard Bernstein conducts a Mahler piece in the Ely Cathedral in Cambridge. The story of how this sequence came to be is almost as incredible as the scene itself and the power of Cooper’s performance is matched by the sheer beauty of the score.
This is the perfect example of why the sound in “Maesto” is so good — it helps to tell the story of the film and convey character more than almost any other sound in any other film does this year. Cooper has turned to music before for inspiration as his directing debut, “A Star is Born,” relied heavily on the power of music, too. He mines that power here again, too, in a film that tells the story of Bernstein’s marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). While the...

“If you’re going to do a Chanel suit, you have to have respect for it,” costume designer Mark Bridges says. So when Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” script called for one, he went directly to the Parisian fashion house for assistance.
Spanning four decades, “Maestro” follows Leonard Bernstein’s (Cooper) journey to becoming the legendary composer and conductor. However, the story steps away from being a traditional biopic, instead focusing on the love story between Leonard and Felicia Montealegre played by Carey Mulligan.
In one scene, towards the end of the film, Felicia visits the doctor’s office and is diagnosed with cancer. Bridges notes that the detail of her character wearing Chanel’s iconic tweed jacket was in the script. “I loved that. I think it’s interesting when things contradict the surroundings. It speaks to me as clothes as armor and protection if she was going to get bad news,...

Netflix’s “Maestro” is out on the streaming service this Christmas and the period film will surely delight film lovers and movie fans alike. Bradley Cooper‘s Leonard Bernstein film isn’t an ordinary biopic as it dispenses the tired cradle-to-grave true story trope to focus entirely on Bernstein’s marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). The film spans decades including the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and each part of the film is made in the style of filmmaking used in said period. This makes for a wonderfully visual spectacle with the sets, costumes, and hair and makeup all some of the best work in each area of filmmaking. Add to that excellent acting from Cooper and Mulligan as well as top-tier directing, cinematography, and editing and you’ve got an Oscars hopeful that could reap bids in multiple categories. Let’s break it down.
