2023 marks another year where the Academy Awards have shuttered horror from the competition, but genre fans know better than to expect anything less. Although there have always been exceptions in the past, such as "The Exorcist," "The Fly," and "Get Out," the Oscars' track record speaks for itself. But the truth is that horror folks don't really need the attention of the prestigious awards body when they have a better outlet to see their favorites receive some industry recognition.
If you're a horror nerd, then the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards is where you want to be paying attention. Although the famed magazine started this back in the '90s, it's only been in the past few years that they've started making it a yearly tradition. On top of that, the one-hour ceremony, which usually airs on Shudder, is curated for horror folks by horror folks. Where else are you going to...

With even most features struggling to get the big screen limelight they so often deserve these days, it’s harder still to get shorts played big and loud. Once again FrightFest delivers though, with another three feature-length showcases of short-form goodness, giving a platform to some of the most exciting up-and-coming genre filmmakers on the planet.
Here’s this writer’s stand-outs, from another densely packed year:
Kicking things off with Chris McInroy’s tonally perfect, and utterly disgusting workplace splatter comedy Guts; a bold and terrifically performed sketch about what it means to have guts (in every sense of the word) that milks a single joke for all it’s worth beautifully.
The same can be said for smartly devised and shot black comedy Cruise, from director Sam Rudykoff, a tight one room concept that builds wonderfully to a laugh-out-loud kicker of a punchline.
British comedy had a banner year too,...

Huh. Who knew the Nightstream audience were such softies for heavy metal monster bands? Nightstream wrapped up a couple days ago so all that was left was to tally the votes and announce the audience awards! The documentary This is Gwar took top honors this year, winning the audience award in the feature film category. Another documentary, Kier-La Janisse’s doc, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror got a runner-up nod, along with Japanese sci-fi comedy Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes. In regards to the shorts, two films shared top honors this year, Ghost Dogs, from Joe Cappa and Guts from Chris McInroy. Congrats to all the winners and congrats to the National Alliance To End Homelessness and climate change advocacy...

Chad is the owner of Rad Chad's Horror Emporium, a small video store in a small town. As he trains his new employee Hawn, Chad and uber-customer Sam tell gut-busting, blood-splattered stories to bring him up to speed on the rules of the horror genre. They do not know it yet but this knowledge will have real world applications. It is just what every horror fan wants, to put this vast amount of horror knowledge to work. Emily Hagins' segment "Cold Open" is just that. Opening the show it is a full on meta experience with some added deconstruction of the horror genre that brings back memories of Behind the Mask. Chris McInroy's segment "One Time In The Woods" is another hilarious and gory...

One of my favorite horror anthologies to come out in some time is Scare Package, which was conceived by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns and features an array of filmmaking talent, including Emily Hagins, Chris McInroy, Noah Segan, Baron Vaughn, Anthony Cousins, and Courtney and Hillary Andujar. The film hits Shudder exclusively today, and to mark the occasion, Daily Dead recently spoke with Koontz about the project, and how it was a labor of love created between him and a group of friends.
Koontz also discussed why it was important to him that Scare Package became a showcase for those who had been cutting their teeth in the world of short films, celebrating what fans love about the horror genre, and how Aew wrestler Dustin Rhodes got involved with Scare Package to pull off a very special role in the film.

Ask any fan of horror and they will tell you that to be a horror fan transcends mere love of the genre. Horror goes beyond the content of the films, it’s a community. Horror has its own rules and tropes that are gospel to those that speak the language of the films. For horror fans, there is a rite of passage and a ritual to knowing certain films by heart and recognizing titans of the both the films and the broader world surrounding them. Scare Package understands this and delivers a perfectly packaged film as a gift to the community and fans of horror everywhere.
Scare Package is the creation of Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura) & Cameron Burns. The film is an anthology of short horror segments that are brilliantly woven into a larger, overarching story. Seven directors flex their horror skills and enjoy a playground of tropes and twists,...

Shudder’s upcoming Scare Package is a love-letter to genre obsessions inked in blood by horror-loving filmmakers. Any anthology comes with ups and downs, but thankfully the “ups” here swing bigger than expected. Seven directors submit a collection of meta-spoofy spooks which share a collective heart that is forever in the right place. The bigger the horror fan, the harder the jokes land as recognizable structures or archetypes are roasted over an open flame. Sometimes to a charred, smokey Texas flavor that is worth drool-dribble reactions, other times overdone and burned to a bitter aftertaste that’s easier to forget.
So, let’s talk “package.”
Together, shorts double as old-school bites of horror nostalgia that populate a VHS rental joint owned by the film’s Randy Meeks replicant. As a new employee learns the ropes, titles are “explained” by either “Rad” Chad (Jeremy King), regular horror-bro customer Sam (Byron Brown...

Tagline: "7 Directors. 7 Tales of Terror. 0 Working Cell Phones." Scare Package is a horror anthology. From the minds of seven different directors, this release is slated for a showing on Shudder, this Summer. Covering several ghoulish tales, the director's consist of: Courtney Andujar (Body at Brighton Rock), Hillary Andujar, Anthony Cousins, Emily Hagins, Aaron B. Koontz, Chris McInroy, Noah Segan and Baron Vaughn. This huge crew of filmmakers is responsible for the terror that cometh this June. The segments have been titled: "Girls' Night Out of Body," "The Night He Came Back Again! Part IV: The Final Kill," "Cold Open," "Rad Chad's Horror Emporium, Horror Hypothesis," "One Time in the Woods," "M.I.S.T.E.R.," and "So Much to Do" A couple of the writers may have gone overboard on the titles. "Be cool, demon! Demon, be cool!" This is why you don't mess with black magic! One more creative, well-made, funny short film to end this year. We Summoned a Demon, from writer/director Chris McInroy, has played at over 120 film festivals since 2017 and is now available online. The short is about a couple of dudes who accidentally summon a demon, and don't want to admit their mistake. Starring Kirk Johnson, Carlos Larotta, and John Orr. This short is also the third and final in a sort-of linked trilogy of gory horror comedy shorts from McInroy, and it might just be the best. Thanks to io9 for the tip on this one. Original description from Vimeo: "They just wanted to be cool. Instead, they got a demon." We Summoned a Demon is both written and directed by filmmaker Chris McInroy - follow him @chrismcinroy and find more of his work on Vimeo.

Filmmaker Chris McInroy is no stranger to these pages or to much of our readership: his short films such as Bad Guy Number 2 and Death Metal have screened at festivals around the world and won numerous awards. McInroy's latest opus, We Summoned a Demon, finds him yet again wading into the hilariously bloody and inept actions of an earnest yet arguably not-so-smart guy (played by the brilliant Kirk C. Johnson), as two guys try to get some dark powers to help them talk to girls. Of course, as is expected, it doesn't exactly go as planned. After its extensive festival run, the short is now online for your viewing pleasure!...

Austin-based director Chris McInroy has been racking up the accolades on his short films at festivals around the globe. His tiny terrors Bad Guy #2 and Death Metal have reaped tons of awards at badass genre film festivals for good reason. He's a solid director who makes hilarious, blood-splattered, black comedy gold. What, you may ask, is this leading up to? McInroy and his team are gearing up for more gore-tastic fun and need your help to make it a reality. His track record is there, and even his rewards are high-quality --- as the owner of a Death Metal shirt, I can attest to its luxurious softness and kickass design, which makes it one of my favorite t-shirts Ever. This time around, McInroy is going to tell the story...

Short films don't often get a lot of love --- or attention --- from the press. That's why I'm proud to cover the Short Fuse 2016 program from Fantastic Fest and programmer Peter Kuplowsky. Short Fuse held a lot of great surprises from all over the globe; within it I see the future of international indie horror. The Stylist from Jill Gevargizian took home the Special Mention Award for Acting, and it's easy to see why; lead Najarra Townsend is a multifaceted villain. Even while she's doing very bad things to her clients, we feel her anguish in a poignant scene. Townsend is terrific in Gevargizian's standout shot. Chris McInroy's hysterical Death Metal had the loudest and most positive response of all the shorts in the screening (first...

I've got an awesome short film for you to watch today that's one of my favorites of the year. It's called Bad Guy #2 and it follows a young man's rise to power in the mob. This is a hysterical film that's gory as hell! The main character is great, and I really enjoyed how the story played out with the comedic aspects, but one of the many things that make this short special is the fact that all of the over-the-top blood and gore effects were done practically.
The film was directed by Chris McInroy and the first time I saw it was while I was covering the FilmQuest Film Festival earlier this year. Here's the brief synopsis:
In this practical effects driven splatter comedy, one bad guy discovers that sometimes promotions suck.
Now watch the short and enjoy the bloody madness! ...

What death metal needs is more death. At least that's the thinking of Austin based filmmaker Chris McInroy, who is currently coming to the end of a crowd funding campaign to support his latest horror comedy short Death Metal. From the team that brought you Bad Guy #2 comes a comedy short film about a young metalhead who gets handed down a guitar by his metalhead dad who got it from his dad and so on and so on. This badass guitar comes with some rules though. And of course our irresponsible metalhead hero doesn't follow those rules and the carnage begins! McInroy's previous short - Bad Guy #2 - has been a big hit on the festival circuit and while it's continuing its international run...

21 Jump Street opens Friday, and we have been banging the drum hard in support of this raucous comedy. This evening, our bandwagon just tripled as crowds streamed from the Paramount Theatre . where the film just held a SXSW premiere . and sang the movie.s praises. These are just a few of our favorite Tweets that blew up Twitter right after the screening. .21 Jump Street was way better than it should have been.. Igor .You couldn't hear half the jokes cause the #SXSW crowd was rightfully cheering & screaming for 21 Jump Street, one of the best of 2012 so far.. Germain Lussier .Believe the hype. 21 Jump Street is Really funny. Loudest laughs and claps I've ever heard at the Paramount.. Chris McInroy .21 Jump Street was much funnier than I expected. A great addition to the #SXSW Monday night Paramount Theater studio comedy tradition.. Matt Dentler See? Now you don.t have to take...

Indie Go, a division of Vci Entertainment, is set to release Jerry and Mike Thompson’s odd 2009 comedy “Thor at the Bus Stop” on DVD this April. What in the hell is Thor doing hanging around a bus stop, you ask? Apparently the hero wanted to take one last trip through the suburbs before embarking on an quest against evil. Along the way, he’ll encounter a colorful group of seedy characters whose stories intertwine in amusing ways. Epic. Perhaps you’ll glean more from this synopsis: Thor At The Bus Stop is a fantasy/comedy about the mythical Thor, the Norse god of lightning, making his final journey through a suburban neighborhood on the day he is going to die fighting to save the world. Thor starts a chain reaction of interweaving story lines packed with colorful characters, a “Pulp Fiction” vibe, and themes about goodness and the Power of Cool.

This is regarding the Your Highness: Swords & Sorcery Supreme event we posted on Facebook. If you’re just hearing about it now, the RSVPs are closed and counted and we will not be taking anymore. Thanks for your understanding.
Wow. We had quite a day trying to get this event set up, and due to some miscommunication, things got… well.. miscommunicated. Let’s start from the beginning! We get a lot of opportunities to bring you guys advanced promotional screenings for soon-to-be-released films. These opportunities usually come in the form of a studio request and are usually promoted via Facebook. Facebook isn’t necessarily the strongest system for managing the sheer volume of excited people RSVPing to these events, however, and this became very clear today. We are already moving forward on a new system that will allow us to announce RSVPs to our loyal Facebook followers but use...
