“Better Things” is coming to an end. Pamela Adlon’s award-winning series is currently filming Season 5, which FX has confirmed will be its last. The cable network picked up Season 5 in May 2020, though shooting was delayed until July 2021.
“I will forever be grateful to FX for allowing me to tell stories the way I see the world, and want the world to be seen,” Adlon said in a statement to Deadline. “Making this show has been film school for me. I bow down to my crew and my cast. And I can’t wait for people to discover and re-discover ‘Better Things.’ This is gonna be a wrap on Sam Fox (for now). See you at the after party.”
In addition to writing, directing, executive producing, and showrunning “Better Things,” Adlon plays Sam Fox, a working actor living in Los Angeles with her three daughters, Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah...

"Be prepared for anything." Disney has revealed an official trailer for an extra campy comedy titled Magic Camp, debuting direct to streaming on Disney+ this weekend. This is the latest fun-for-everyone comedy from filmmaker Mark Waters, the director of Freaky Friday, Mean Girls, Just Like Heaven, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Mr. Popper's Penguins. A group of misfit campers help a down-on-his-luck magician rediscover his love of magic in Magic Camp, a heartwarming comedy about finding joy and confidence in self-acceptance. Adam Devine stars as Andy, who attempts to reboot his love for magic (and for competition) at the camp. This also stars Gillian Jacobs, Aldis Hodge, J.J. Totah, Rochelle Aytes, Rosalind Chao, Michael Hitchcock, Rebecca Metz, and Jeffrey Tambor as the camp's owner Roy Preston. This looks as terribly cheesy and as cliche as expected, but still fun to see a movie about magic. Here's the...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Things” Season 4, Episode 10, “Listen to the Roosters.”]
Ghosts are walking among us, and they’re feeling very, very good.
One ghost in particular gets a temporary spotlight in the “Better Things” Season 4 finale (now available on Hulu), as a gray-haired woman in a yellow dress (played by Ellen Geer) shares a bit of foresight with Duke (Olivia Edward), the Fox family medium. Duke regularly connects with spirits, whether it’s the recurring presence of her grandfather in Season 3 or during the otherworldly Season 2 episode, “White Rock,” so it’s not all that surprising when her new friend up and vanishes via an apparitional Irish goodbye.
But before she leaves, this ghost offers a key bit of advice. Claiming she can see the future, Duke (in a moment of prescience) first asks if there is a future (there is), before saying, “I never want to get married or have kids...

In a theater filled to the brim with Television Academy members, it was actor Diedrich Bader who made the best argument as to why creator, director, and star of FX’s “Better Things” Pamela Adlon has been so successful at crafting such a profoundly humane TV series.
“You’re doing it for all of us,” Bader said. “All of the actors who’ve been kicking around for years and making a living in this business. That’s why you’re so at ease on the set, I find, is that you are just completely comfortable with all the roles that you’ve accepted.”
The crowd gathered at Saban Media Center at the Television Academy in North Hollywood on May 10 appreciated Bader’s revelation, which came during the Emmys Fyc panel for “Better Things,” on the heels of Adlon’s own admission that it was incredible that “somebody like us” was...

It’s been 15 months since we’ve had a new episode of Better Things, but the wait is over is a couple of weeks. As fans await for the Season 3 premiere of Pamela Adlon’s comedy February 28, FX has released a first-look featurette. Check it out above.
Adlon, who’s been Emmy-nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy for each of the show’s first two seasons, notes that the new episodes will see “other worlds that [her character Sam Fox] inhabits since she’s able to get out and let her hair down a little bit more. And then the pressures start to build again.”
We also hear from the young but “getting older” co-stars who play Sam’s vastly different daughters — Mikey Madison (Max), Hannah Alligood (Frankie) and Olivia Edward (Duke) — along with Celia Imrie, who plays their offbeat and unpredictable Brit expat grandma, Phyllis.

Of the 10 Emmy nominations “This Is Us” received last year, seven of them were for acting. If that wasn’t enough evidence that actors love the tearjerker, the cast pulled off an upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, grabbing drama ensemble honors. If that love sustains and grows, how many acting nominations could the series nab this year?

Only two of last year’s nominees aren’t eligible: guest actor nominees Brian Tyree Henry and Denis O’Hare. But our readers believe Mandy Moore and Justin Hartley, the two main Pearsons who were snubbed last year, will for sure get in this year in drama lead actress and drama supporting actor, respectively, to join reigning drama actor champ Sterling K. Brown, Milo Ventimiglia and Chrissy Metz. Hartley, in particular, got a boon when...

Need to catch up? Check out the previous This Is Us recap here.
There are some Friday nights under the lights that even Coach Taylor wouldn’t be able to save.
Kevin has one of ’em in this week’s This Is Us, which chronicles two fraught nights in the Pearson sibling’s life: one where he first busts his knee, thus ending his dreams of collegiate and professional football glory, and one where he returns to his high school, literally high, and makes a chain of very poor choices.
And that’s all before the episode’s worst development comes to light.

On tonight’s episode of FX comedy Better Things, Rebecca Metz is a key component in the episode titled “Phil”, which explores the burdens and heartbreak of trying to care for an elder parent who is neurologically failing. The series stars Pamela Adlon and is a wickedly pointed comedy about her character Sam Fox raising three distinctly challenging daughters and one physically frail and homesick English mother living in Los Angeles and working in the entertainment industry. None of it is easy. In this pivotal episode, amidst Sam’s ongoing issues with her mom Phil (Phyllis played by Celia Imrie), we will...read more...

Last year, FX gave its Better Things TV show an early second season renewal, after just two episodes had aired. The FX cast also includes Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward, Celia Imrie, Rebecca Metz, and Alysia Reiner. The world of Web Series is about as diverse as it gets. From format, to genre, to production quality, they’re everywhere, and some of them take the opportunity to go for a risk.
Being un-Google-able is a risk, as is being a fairly tame show with a name like Cam Girls, but the series, which hits June 1st is surprisingly layered for something that only has 4-6 minutes to get things done.
The story revolves around Liv (Kate Bond), and the journey that leads her to becoming a Cam Girl. As she mentions in the trailer, she starts at the beginning. It’s actually a well-developed road that highlights the odd, and unforeseeable turns our lives may take. A new job, a new friend, a friend’s husband who has spy cams all over his house… the usual.
The show isn’t exactly comedic, or dramatic, and those who...

April 14, 2015It was an awards show born in a moment of relevance. An electrified contingent of professional Los Angeles Intimate theater companies and their friends sold out Los Angeles theatre Center to support the first-everSTAGE Raw Theatre Awards. Picking up where the La Weekly Awards, left off, and hosted by the Celebration Theatre and the hilarious duo of Alec Mapa and Parvesh Cheena, it was a night to celebrate the best of 99-seat theatre and a rallying cry against the Equity proposal and referendum that is currently being voted on. Impassioned speeches were given by Steven Leigh Morris and Bill Raden to open the show, followed by an introduction of the original plaintiffs in the Equity wars of 30 years ago who all received a standing ovation. One of those plaintiffs, Gary Grossman, gave a rousing speech as he presented the Queen of the Angels award to Rebecca Metz, who brought...
