Cary's father is from a Japanese family, and was born in a Japanese-American internment camp during World War II. Cary's maternal grandfather was of Swedish descent, and Cary's maternal grandmother's ancestry is English and German.

Originally attached to direct It (2017) with Will Poulter set to star as Pennywise. Once Cary Fukunaga left the project Will Poulter remained on board with Andy Muschietti signed on to direct. Poulter left the project and was replaced by Bill Skarsgård.
