SYDNEY -- The beleaguered Australian Film Institute has lost its second CEO in less than a year as Geoffrey Williams announced his resignation Wednesday after an apparent clash over strategy and direction with several newly installed board members. The screen culture body, which convenes Australia's preeminent film and television awards event, the AFI Awards, last month appointed property developer Morry Schwartz as chairman. Schwartz replaced the retiring Denny Lawrence. Three other new members also were named to replace retiring directors. Williams drove what's been largely praised as a successful rebirth of the AFI Awards in 2005, securing state government funding, installing promoter Paul Dainty as producer of the show and securing Russell Crowe as host. He resigned just six weeks after the 2005 awards ceremony and nine months into his three-year contract.

SYDNEY -- In a major coup for the Australian Film Institute, Oscar-winner Russell Crowe will host this year's AFI Awards, to be held Nov. 25 and 26 in Melbourne, the awards' producer Paul Dainty of Dainty Consolidated Entertainment announced Monday. Crowe, who is currently filming in Europe, said in a statement that the awards will be "Irreverent and respectful in equal measures. Interesting TV, that's the aim. Fast paced, fun and most importantly celebratory of this year's nominees." The AFI Awards, Australia's Oscars equivalent, is in its 47th year, and pays tribute to films, TV, and documentary through membership and peer group voting. Final nominations in all categories will be announced Oct. 21. 17 features have been entered for this year's competition. A broadcaster for the awards has yet to be named. "The 2005 AFI Awards will be significantly different from any other year and securing Russell Crowe to host the awards is a major coup," said Dainty, who is one of Australia's major concert and stage promoters. "It confirms the fact that the AFI Awards are the country's premier film awards. Russell will bring an unprecedented level of excitement to the event." The announcement comes as Sydney-based Crowe's "Cinderella Man" punched its way to the top of the Australian boxoffice this weekend after previews the previous week, according to estimates Sunday.
