This latest edition, which runs from 4 to 8 March, is a milestone for the Finnish short-film festival. The Tampere Film Festival in Finland, one of the most renowned festivals on the European short-film circuit, is turning 50 this year. This anniversary edition will be full of celebration, notably with the section ‘Simply The Best’ comprised of two programmes showcasing an award winning film from every decade of the festival’s existence. Amongst them are perennial festival favourites such as Ken Wardrop’s still beautiful documentary Undressing My Mother and the classic and satirical Breakfast on the Grass from legendary Estonian animator Priit Pärn. While the festival will celebrate its past, it will also deal with an uncertain future, with five programmes of films dedicated to various aspects of climate change. Amongst the films screened will be Dulce, the winner of...

Anyone who's ever struggled to nail a crotchet will feel nostalgic watching Irish documentary Making the Grade, an elegant tribute to piano teachers and their charges. Footage from lessons is intercut with interviews in which students discuss working with their teachers, and vice versa. A traditional approach to this subject might have centered around a few key characters, but director-lenser Ken Wardrop instead checks in with (and promptly leaves behind) dozens of student-teacher combos, and frequently doesn't even bother to introduce them. Ascending through the grades in a series of vignettes, the film is chock full of precocious but hugely...

Exclusive: Visit Films has acquired worldwide rights excluding Ireland to Ken Wardrop’s documentary ahead of its world premiere in Telluride this weekend.
Styled as a ‘creative documentary’, Mom And Me profiles three tough men and their mothers in Oklahoma.
The film follows a cowboy preacher, an inmate and a former district attorney and explores what their mothers mean to them.
Oklahoma City was voted ‘America’s manliest city’ in 2012 by a study backed by Mars Chocolate North America, Combos snacks and researcher Bert Sperling.
Ania Trzebiatowska, who joined Visit in June as manager of acquisitions, negotiated the deal for the New York-based company.
“I am thrilled that my first acquisition for Visit Films is a perfect example of the type of filmmaking that I find inspiring, touching and accessible,” said Trzebiatowska. “We can’t wait to share Mom and Me with audiences around the world.”

Read More: Telluride Announces 2015 Lineup, Including 'Steve Jobs,' 'Black Mass' and Rooney Mara Tribute In what seems to be the cinematic equivalent of the "Mom tattoo," "Mom and Me" takes a look at tough guys and the even tougher women who raise them. Set in Oklahoma City, apparently voted the manliest city in the United States, this creative documentary from Irish director Ken Wardrop ("His & Hers") chronicles the relationships between ten sons and their mothers. The exclusive trailer above offers an early glimpse at these tender and occasionally troubled relationships. Despite coming from a variety of backgrounds, which range from cowboy preacher to incarcerated inmate to district attorney, each of the son's stories look to shed light on a softer side of American masculinity. Mark Kermode's pick of the DVDs that were overlooked this year
Benda Bilili!
A strong contender for best film of the year, this electrifying account of Congolese street musicians overcoming incredible odds to bring their invigorating music to the world is a real reason to be cheerful. The soundtrack is infectious, the film-making unobtrusive, and the central characters endlessly inspiring. Bravo!
Patagonia
Diverse and unpredictable in his output, Marc Evans (Resurrection Man, My Litte Eye, Snow Cake) remains one of the UK's most consistently interesting and inventive filmmakers. Somewhat overlooked in cinemas, this lyrical cross-cultural escapade teases out longstanding connections between Wales and Argentina, with Evans drawing together the past and present with ease.
We Were Here

From a girl-infant’s cries as her father puts her down to the laments of elderly women who’ve outlived their husbands, here are 70 women talking about the men in their lives with the kind of casual frankness, bald honesty, and total love that typically gets bypassed on film in favor of empty rom-com fantasies. Here is real-life romantic comedy, as exasperated gradeschoolers complain of being instructed to clean their rooms by dads they adore, as teenagers wonder at the mysteries of first attraction to young men equally as terrified by this new experience, as young wives and mothers talk of learning to adjust to the needs of husbands and small sons, as middle-aged women find themselves caring for aging fathers, as old women rebuild their lives on their own once more as widows, and find new meaning to both their pasts and their futures. Documentarian Ken Wardrop, making his...

The Wind That Shakes The Barley – Cillian Murphy fights off the British in a movie that resonates with the whole country. Directed by Ken Loach. Norwegian Wood (15)
(Tran Anh Hung, 2010, Japan) Kenichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi, Kiko Mizuhara, Tetsuji Tamayama, Kengo Kôra. 133 mins
Between its daunting cult status and its decidedly un-romcom themes, it's amazing Haruki Murakami's proto-emo Japanese teen tale ever got made. Coming of age here is a languid, melancholy journey across tragedy, mental illness, sexual frustration and other sorrows, but the tone is beautifully maintained, visually and aurally, and it captures something most youth movies never even attempt to find.
Fair Game (12A)
(Doug Liman, 2010, Us) Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Ty Burrell. 108 mins
What Hollywood liberal bias? This dramatisation of the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame over her husband's non-cooperation with Bush's Iraq plans dares to name names and point fingers. True-life political and personal tensions are brought back to the boil.
Battle: Los Angeles (12A)

This is a charming documentary about Irish women and their ideas about men – but pretty obvious and soft-focus too, says Peter Bradshaw
Documentary-maker Ken Wardrop interviews 70 Irish women – ranging in age from girlhood to widowhood – on the subject of men. The result is sparky and cheerful if condescending and weirdly infantilising. You may remember the old TV show Kids Say the Funniest Things: this is Kids and Adults Say the Most Heartwarming Things. Wardrop's interviewees are great: vibrant and intelligent. But they are asked for nothing other than sweet, pleasant thoughts on men, hearth and home. In DVD form, this would make a nice Mother's Day present.

Ken Wardrop's 'His & Hers', which was released in Irish cinemas on June 18th, has now reached a gross box-office of over €300,000 making it the highest grossing documentary released in Ireland since Michael Moore's 'Farrenheit 911'. This is a fantastic result for the Irish documentary, which was made on a micro budget of just €100,000. Opening on week one on just €40,000, the power of word of mouth means the film has now grossed 7.5 times this amount. Speaking on the success of the film, Head of Distribution at Element Pictures Audrey Sheils commented that: "We knew that if we could just get people into see this film, then the emotion, tears and laughter that this film generates would spread across the country. Opening on just 8 prints we hoped for success but nothing could have prepared us for what it has achieved...

Screenplay, Britain's most northerly film festival, is a world away from the glitz and hype of Cannes
A couple of years ago, as I was dragging my sorry bones around another overcrowded, overheated, overhyped film festival in the broiling south of France, somebody asked me "How come you always look so miserable in Cannes?" I thought about this for a while before answering, "All things considered, I'd rather be in Shetland."
This was no idle threat. For the past four years, my partner Linda Ruth Williams and I have been proudly co-curating Shetland Arts' annual ScreenPlay festival, a celebration of everything we love about cinema that's about as far away from the exclusive ghastliness of the Croisette as it's possible to get in terms of both climate and culture. Last year we held a screening in a bus shelter in Unst, the most northerly in the UK (if you don't get off here,...

In a summer of tired and stale movies from Hollywood, ‘His and Hers’ is a breath of fresh air blowing in from the midlands of Ireland.” His and Hers is a cinematic mosaic that tells the story of 70 different Irish woman’s love stories, through their own admissions. Each woman speaks openly about that special man in their life. The film is currently being screened in select cinemas around Ireland. You know who's great? Women. Seriously, they're one of my favorite genders. And you know who agrees with me? Ken Wardrop, whose adorably sweet documentary His & Hers presents life through the eyes of about 70 different Irish women. I should caution you that if you watch this movie, you will be struck with an overwhelming desire to go hug your wife, sister, girlfriend, mother, or daughter, whichever beloved female is closest and will tolerate being hugged by you.
Wardrop's concept is simplicity itself. Having rounded up all these Irish lasses, ranging in age from 4 to 90, he has each one talk to the camera and describe her relationships with the men in her life. The footage is arranged according to the age of the subject, starting with a toddler talking about her daddy, all the way up through a nonagenarian discussing her late husband. We continue our long road toward SXSW 2010 (March 12-21) with another spotlight. This time, we're looking at a Sundance 2010 holdover. But not just a holdover, the winner of the World Cinema Cinematography Award for Documentaries at Sundance. It is His & Hers, from director Ken Wardrop, a "cinematic mosaic" that tells a long-spanning love story through the eyes of 70 women. It sounds very cool. So cool in fact, that we've scored the film's official synopsis, a few photos and a Q&A with Ken Wardrop for your viewing pleasure below. Have a look. His & Hers (dir. Ken Wardrop) Category: Festival Favorites His & Hers is a creative documentary that combines observation and imagination to illustrate a universal love story. Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

Debra Granik's "Winter's Bone" was the big winner in Park City Saturday night, as it won both the dramatic competition grand jury prize and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Earlier in the day, the gritty drama secured North American distribution through Roadside Attractions for release later this year.
The film, about an unflinching Ozark Mountain girl trudging through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her missing father, was adapted from the Daniel Woodrell novel by Granik and Anne Rosellini. Granik's previous film, the 2004 Sundance entry "Down to the Bone," won her a dramatic directing award.
The rest of the awards were fairly well spread around at the Saturday night ceremony hosted by David Hyde Pierce, who starred in the Park City at Midnight entry "The Perfect Host" this year.

I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.
For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.
Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:
“We may even be going into a golden age for independent films, in that the technology will make it possible for the films to be made and for audiences to see them. The industry is going through a major evolutionary stage right now, there’s no doubt about that,...

- It’s no coincidence that the Sundance Festival Short Film Program had to sift through a lot more short films this year – video filmmakers are popping out from everywhere and filling the web with viral video content. A whopping 5,107 submissions were submitted and a total of 83 were programmed for the upcoming edition of the 08 fest.
