Sam Altman, a major figure in Silicon Valley‘s burgeoning AI industry who earlier this year testified before Congress on the dangers of the technology, has been removed as CEO of OpenAI, according to a company statement. The surprise firing has set off a flurry of questions about why a startup currently positioned for a valuation of up to $90 billion would cut ties with its chief executive.
Shortly after news of Altman’s ousting, the company’s president Greg Brockman, who earlier stepped down from the board, announced he was quitting.

One of the many consequences of the last century was the innovation of the city. Following the development of the industrial revolution, the modern metropolis was born with cities such as London, New York or Berlin becoming the multi-faceted places they are now, combining living spaces, work places and also various aspects of entertainment. However, as the urban space has expanded, giving birth to ideas such as gentrification, mass unemployment and a class society which has become increasingly obvious from the city’s design nowadays, a certain regressive desire has awoken in many people. While this also has problematic consequences, director Mehedi Mostafa contemplates whether it is really a new definition of the city we need, which is a concept at the core of his new short feature “Fantasy Is A Concrete Jungle”.

The Wrestler, directed by Bangladeshi-Canadian filmmaker Iqbal H. Chowdhury, and September 1923, from Japan’s Tatsuya Mori, picked up the New Currents Awards as Busan International Film Festival wrapped a busy 28th edition on October 13.
Chowdhury’s film tells the story of an eccentric fisherman who learns a traditional form of wrestling to take on the village champion, while September 1923, the debut fiction film of documentary filmmaker Mori, revolves around the massacre that took place after the Great Kanto earthquake 100 years ago.
The Kim Jiseok Award, presented to films in Busan’s Jiseok section, went to Sri Lankan director Prasanna Vithanage’s Paradise, about an Indian couple facing problems in their marriage during a trip to Sri Lanka, and Mirlan Abdykalykov’s Bride Kidnapping, about the widespread practice of forcing women into marriage in Kyrgyzstan.

Bangladesh is a vital presence at the 2023 Busan International Film Festival with three films in competition and a film at the Asian Project Market.
The current wave of Bangladeshi cinema was heralded by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s “Television,” which closed Busan in 2012. The festival has subsequently screened almost every major work emerging from the country.
Farooki’s latest effort “Something Like an Autobiography” plays in the festival’s Jiseok competition. Feature debutants Biplob Sarkar’s “The Stranger” and Iqbal H. Chowdhury’s “The Wrestlers” are in the New Currents competition for first or second features. Robiul Alam Robi’s “Suraiya” is selected for the Apm.
Like all cinema that successfully transcends national borders, this latest crop from Bangladesh is rooted in the local ethos but features themes that are universal. “Something Like an Autobiography,” for example, deals with themes of pregnancy alongside societal and political pressures on celebrities. “The Wrestler” marries sport,...

The casual James Bond fan might think that author Ian Fleming invented all of 007's trademarks before his novels were adapted for the screen, but the truth is a lot more complex. One of the biggest influences on the Bond we've all come to know and love was director Terence Young, who oversaw the spy's first big-screen outing in 1962, "Dr. No." Without Young, Bond would have arguably failed. The filmmaker brought his sophistication, fashion sense, and humor to Bond, all of which would come to define the character in the popular consciousness.
Of course, Young undoubtedly benefited from having Sean Connery as his star. Playing James Bond was, however, a double-edged sword for Connery. The actor debuted as England's greatest spy in "Dr. No," but over the course of the next decade would punctuate his tenure as 007 with remarkably nuanced and powerful performances in such classics as 1965's "The Hill...

For a long time, "Moonraker" was considered by many hardcore James Bond fans as the nadir of the franchise. Based on the third novel in Ian Fleming's 007 series, the film was rushed into production to take advantage of the blockbuster sci-fi craze kicked off by George Lucas' "Star Wars" and Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Like most adaptations of Fleming's work pre-2006's "Casino Royale," the film was a goofy, gadget-laden departure from Fleming's grittier, more grounded books. But for some, "Moonraker" went several steps too far.
From the cheeky references to the aforementioned '70s smashes (particularly punching in a door code with the five-note "Close Encounters" theme) to the laser-gun battle on Hugo Drax's space station, "Moonraker" played like self-parody. And to a degree, it is. But now that we've seen the series successfully course-correct several times over the next four decades,...

Among James Bond movies, "Goldfinger" stands as the film that cemented 007's status as a global icon. Guy Hamilton's 1964 effort has since become known as the blueprint for all future Bond films, establishing longstanding tropes that still define the franchise today. A globe-spanning adventure, "Goldfinger" introduced that gadget-filled Aston Martin DB5 alongside legendary Bond girl Pussy Galore, played by the late Honor Blackman. Then there was that famous laser beam scene, in which Sean Connery's Bond is strapped to a table and forced to await an inexplicably slow death.
But it wasn't just gadgets and Bond girls with dodgy names that "Goldfinger" brought to the table. Richard Maibaum and Paul Dehn's script also introduced more subtle staples to the 007 saga, including an opening sequence seemingly unrelated to the film's main plot and a testy relationship between the titular spy and Desmond Llewelyn's Q that established the pair's dynamic going forward.

Dhaka, Aug 4 (Ians) With just over two months left for the 2023 Men’s Odi World Cup, veteran left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal has decided to step down as Bangladesh’s Odi captain and will miss the upcoming Asia Cup due to a back injury.
Tamim had earlier announced his retirement from international cricket on July 6 but reversed the decision following a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. His recent decision means that Bangladesh will have a new Odi captain ahead of the mega event happening in India from October 5 to November 19.
Though Tamim will be unavailable for the Asia Cup to be hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka from August 31 to September 17, he wishes to be fit for the Odi series against New Zealand at home starting from September 21 before the World Cup arrives.
“I believe injury is an issue. I took an injection (on July 28), but it is like a hit or miss.

That player was none other than the Brazilian legend Pele, regarded by most football aficionados as the greatest player ever to grace the football field.
Pele visited India twice — the first time in 1977 as part of the New York Cosmos team, which he had joined towards the end of his career, travelling across the world to promote the game through exhibition matches.
On his second visit in 2015, Pele arrived in New Delhi and then went to Kolkata on a week-long tour. He witnessed the Subroto Cup U-17 final in Delhi.
It was his visit in 1977 that generated huge interest in the country and is still remembered by thousands of fans who had lined-up the road from Kolkata’s Dum Dum to his hotel and then from his hotel to the Eden Gardens, which had around 80,000 spectators.
