Canberra, May 2 (Ians) As part of a major crackdown, the Australian government has decided to ban recreational vaping and introduce minimum quality standards, while restricting the sale of vapes only to pharmacies, the media reported on Tuesday. Nicotine vapes already require a prescription in Australia, but the industry is poorly regulated and a black market is thriving, the BBC reported.
According to Health Minister Mark Butler, the products are creating a new generation of nicotine addicts.
Also known as e-cigarettes, vapes heat a liquid – usually containing nicotine – turning it into a vapour that users inhale.
They are widely seen as a product to help smokers quit.
But in Australia, vapes have become a recreational product targeted at kids and “sold alongside lollies and chocolate bars” in retail stores, the BBC quoted Butler as saying.
“Just like they did with smoking, ‘Big Tobacco’ has taken another addictive product, wrapped it in...

Canberra, April 24 (Ians) The Australian government has committed new funding for research into long Covid, Health Minister Mark Butler announced on Monday.
Butler announced that A$50 million ($33 million) from the Medical Research Future Fund will be made available for research into post-acute sequelae of Covid-19 (Pasc), reports Xinhua news agency.
Butler said the funding would help improve the knowledge of Pasc, commonly known as long Covid, and provide evidence to inform policy and health responses.
The announcement was made to coincide with the release of a parliamentary report into the health, economic and social impacts of long Covid.
The standing committee on health, aged care and sport called for the establishment of a single national Covid-19 database under the Australian Centre for Disease Control and a nationally-coordinated research program into Covid-19 and long Covid.
“Long Covid is an emerging health issue, both in Australia and internationally,” Butler said in a statement.

Canberra, Feb 8 (Ians) Australian Minister for Health Mark Butler on Wednesday said the government has accepted the advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (Atagi) to roll out a new round of booster shots.
From February 20, all adults who have not had a booster shot or were infected with Covid-19 in the past six months will be eligible for another dose, reports Xinhua news agency.
Butler said Atagi particularly recommended that everyone aged 65 and over and younger adults with medical comorbidities, disability or complex health needs have a 2023 booster dose.
The government has 4 million doses of Omicron-specific vaccine doses available now with another 10 million expected to arrive in February.
“From February 20, all adults who haven’t had a booster or an infection in the past six months can go out and get a booster shot, to give them additional protection against severe illness from Covid,” Butler said in a statement.
