Amber Sealey’s Out of My Mind had a Sundance Film Festival audience feeling all the feels Friday as the Disney+ title had its world premiere at the Library Center Theatre.
The film casts first-time performer Phoebe-Ray Taylor as Melody Brooks, a sixth grader navigating school as a nonverbal wheelchair user with cerebral palsy. With the help of assistive technology and her devoted allies, Melody shows that what she has to say is more important than how she says it in a fight to be put in a mainstream classroom.
Taylor stars alongside Luke Kirby, Rosemarie DeWitt, Judith Light, Michael Chernus, Courtney Taylor and others. Jennifer Aniston, who offers her voiceover talents through narration, took to Instagram Stories to praise the film on the occasion of its world premiere. (Aniston was not present in Park City but her history with Sundance dates back to The Good Girl and Friends with Money.

Alexander Rodnyansky’s Ar Content – in partnership with Kevin Macdonald, an Oscar winner with “One Day in September,” and Rosanne Korenberg – has tapped Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Rory Kennedy, best known for “Last Days in Vietnam,” to direct its untitled documentary centering on a little-known refugee crisis immediately preceding World War II.
The film will center on the voyage of the transatlantic liner St. Louis in 1939, which was carrying Jews fleeing Nazi but was turned away by Cuba and the U.S. and forced to return to Europe. Later, 254 of its passengers died in the Holocaust. The film will compare that episode with today’s global refugee crisis.
Alongside Rodnyansky – who was Oscar-nominated for “Leviathan” and “Loveless” – Macdonald and Korenberg, Kennedy and the documentary’s writer Mark Bailey, a WGA nominee for “Last Days in Vietnam” and a three-time Emmy nominee, will produce the film under their production banner Moxie Films.

With two major movie accolades in one year, Chief Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the real Wonder Woman, bar none. Mimi Leder’s dramatic biography takes on a relatively small piece of Ms. Ginsburg’s life, but the simplifications aren’t a problem. It does have the feeling of an old-fashioned celebratory bio, with colorful characters and hiss-able villains. But Leder and screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman never lose track of their central theme.

Call it a pink wave if you must. But there’s no denying that a bunch of feminist-leaning movies are vying for Hollywood’s biggest trophies this awards season.
From animated superhero mom Elastigirl, leaving her husband and kids behind to fight crime in “Incredibles 2,” to a flame-haired Saoirse Ronan leading troops into battle in “Mary Queen of Scots,” a gender-bending Rachel Weisz in “The Favourite” and a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg finding her legal voice in “On the Basis of Sex,” female characters are assuming traditionally male roles on the big screen while contemporary counterparts battle for parity in Hollywood and beyond under the Time’s Up movement.
Even Nicole Kidman’s hollow-eyed detective flips the script on Hollywood gender norms in “Destroyer,” which unravels her troubled past and violent actions rather than those of yet another complicated man.
Although the underlying feminist politics in these movies — intentional...

If you’re looking for a hard-hitting, data-driven, infancy-through-current-day chronicle covering the life of one of the United States’ most popular judges, you’ve come to the wrong place. Or have you come for an affable girl-power memoir? Then, you’ve also made a wrong turn. But are you down to watch a thoughtfully acted, beautifully depicted portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the people surrounding her during the early and middle years of her career in law and education? Then welcome.
On the Basis of Sex covers Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life from law school through the first several years of her career. This period marks the onset of her decades-long (and arguably ongoing) fight for civil rights and the advancement of gender equality.

Executives Didn’t Want to Finance ‘On the Basis of Sex’ Because Husband Character Was Too Supportive
One of the more refreshing aspects to Mimi Leder’s “On the Basis of Sex” is the supportive dynamic between Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her husband, Martin “Marty” D. Ginsberg, played by Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, respectively. The role of Martin is a relatively thankless one, which in a way is revolutionary considering it’s usually the wife character who plays second fiddle to the leading man. “On the Basis of Sex” changes this traditional movie dynamic, and that’s exactly one of the reasons it had trouble getting financed.
In a new interview with The New York Times, “On the Basis of Sex” screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman said financiers and development executives did not want to back the movie at first because of the parity between Ruth and Marty. As reported by The Times, “Backers offered to fund the film if [Martin] was rewritten as angrier, or less understanding; maybe...

“On the Basis of Sex” began eight years ago at the funeral of screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman’s uncle, Marty Ginsburg. Stiepleman learned that Marty, a tax lawyer and professor, and his wife of 56 years, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, once argued a case together back in 1972. Charles E. Moritz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue was Ruth’s first, a landmark case on behalf of gender equality.
Stiepleman thought: “This would make a great movie.” When he approached his aunt for her cooperation, he said he wanted the film to show Marty and Ruth as a marriage of equals. She said: “Well, if that’s how you think you want to spend your time.”
Ginsburg became deeply involved in “On the Basis of Sex”, ensuring that Stiepleman and director Mimi Leder nailed the legal details, giving them books and files along with detailed script notes. She also had cast approval over stars Armie Hammer...

Chicago – Many heroes of America toiled long behind the scenes to break the chains of oppression. For every Susan Anthony or Martin Luther King Jr. there were the activists, legal experts and volunteers who sought the justice denied to them by the archaic patriarchal society. One such hero is Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the film “On the Basis of Sex.”

Ruth Bader Ginsburg — the Notorious Rbg to those who cheer her 25 years of defiantly independent thinking on the Supreme Court — sure as hell deserves a biopic. At 85, the jurist is such a cultural icon that she’s portrayed by Kate McKinnon on SNL as a ball of energy who breaks into a happy dance every time she flips a “Ginsburn.” The woman is a rock star. And anyone who wants a Ginsburg portrait that covers all the bases can check out Rbg, the hit doc released earlier this year.

Save for a few titles, high-profile awards-focused specialties have taken a back seat to last year’s group. A slate of new limited releases this weekend through the rest of 2018, however, might turn the tide. Amazon Studios is opening Pawel Pawlikowski’s drama-romance Cold War today. The Polish filmmaker won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film debuted in May. Focus Features is bowing On the Basis of Sex about U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Christmas. Starring Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, the bio-drama follows the box office sensation, Rbg, which is on the Oscar Feature Documentary shortlist. Nicole Kidman stars in Annapurna’s Destroyer from Karyn Kusama, which also begins its theatrical run Christmas, as will Sony Pictures Classics’ Stan & Ollie starring John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan as the legendary comedy duo popularly known as Laurel and Hardy. And Wellspring is...

How do you make a biopic about one of the greatest living legal and political legends of our lifetime? For one, you don’t. It’s far too great a task to summarize in just two hours the work of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the impact she has had on an entire country and on generations of women.
Instead, director Mimi Leder’s “On the Basis of Sex” is an imperfect — at times too formulaic, but still engaging — love letter to women everywhere by giving them a peek at not the Ginsburg the Supreme Court justice, but Ruth the woman, the mother and the pioneer.
Ginsburg’s nephew, first-time screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman, uses his insider knowledge not only to feature Ruth’s journey to becoming the woman who pioneered gender equality within the law but also to take us inside the home life of Ruth (Felicity Jones...

When Martin Ginsburg met Ruth Bader, a fellow Cornell University student, back in 1950, he first thought: “She’s awfully cute.”
But that wasn’t his only thought. “Then he noticed, she’s awfully smart,” says their son James Ginsburg, 53. “Mom said Dad was the only boy who dated her who cared that she had a brain.”
“He was smitten pretty quickly,” James recalls. “It might have taken my mother a little longer.”
But not too long. They married in 1955 and both enrolled in Harvard Law School. In an era when Ruth was one of nine females, out of 552 students, in her class,...

It’s no easy task to tell Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s story. The Supreme Court justice has become an icon in recent years, earning the moniker "Notorious R.B.G." But her nephew Daniel Stiepleman wanted to tell the story of her rise, before she became a bona fide celebrity.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg returned to her hometown on Sunday for the New York premiere of “On the Basis of Sex,” a biopic starring Felicity Jones tells the Supreme Court justice’s origin story. The 85-year-old Brooklynite received a standing ovation when she entered the Walter Reade Theater — a testament to the Notorious Rbg’s rock-star status.
Ginsburg gave two mandates at the project’s outset: Get the law right, and get Marty right. For Armie Hammer, who plays Ginsburg’s late husband, that meant literally taking a page out of Marty’s book and whipping up a meal for the rest of the cast.
“His recipes were written very much in his voice, so they were funny, they were witty, they were exact, and they were very detail-oriented,” Hammer told Variety on the red carpet. “The care that he took with his cooking also replicated the care that he took with his legal practice — and,...

A version of this article about Daniel Stiepleman and “On the Basis of Sex” first appeared in the Actors/Directors/Screenwriters issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
If most screenwriters told their aunts that they wanted to make a movie about them, the response would probably be, “Why me?” But Daniel Stiepleman’s aunt happens to be one of the most celebrated women of our era, pioneering lawyer and current Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who’s already been the subject of a hit documentary, “Rbg,” earlier this year.
So when Stiepleman told Ginsburg about his movie idea, her big question wasn’t why he wanted to do it, but why he wanted to center the film on the 1972 Moritz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue case, in which she and her husband, Martin Ginsburg, set a precedent that helped overturn sex discrimination.
“She said, ‘Why that case?'” Stiepleman said.

From the soft-spoken methodical meter KiKi Layne’s Tish Rivers uses to narrate the history of social and criminal injustices that have ruined the lives of black men and their families in writer-director Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” to Carey Mulligan’s Jeanette Brinson, a curt and frustrated midcentury housewife who flaunts her extramarital affair in director Paul Dano’s “Wildlife” — a story he and partner Zoe Kazan adapted from the Richard Ford book — this year’s lead actress roles do not rely on stereotypes or character tropes.
“I don’t want to play such a narrow view of femininity that we have so often: that supportive wife, that supportive mother, supportive girlfriend kind of archetype,” says Keira Knightley, who stars in “Colette,” Wash Westmoreland’s biopic about the French novelist from the turn of the previous century that he co-wrote with his late husband, Richard Glatzer, and playwright Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

In the beginning of the new trailer for the Mimi Leder-directed On the Basis of Sex, Felicity Jones is seen as the trailblazing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in her days at Harvard Law School. After seeing Mimi Leder’s “On the Basis of Sex,” centered on Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, at a screening last week, two things became apparent: the Rbg drama is a crowd pleaser, and critical minds will object to its basic presentation.
Judging by reactions to last night’s AFI Fest opening night world premiere, the fissure is starting to show. “Ruth, I’m sorry, you deserve better,” one viewer tweeted. “The quintessential movie for the #MeToo era,” another chimed in. Meanwhile, both sides agree that actress Felicity Jones was the wrong casting decision to play a young Ginsburg, and that she struggles with a New York accent that ebbs and flows throughout.
My take is that the performance perfectly embodies the spirit of the character, regardless of the details, and that the film itself, although aesthetically dialed down, is by no means a cookie-cutter biopic. After all, we...

Before we get to the unique story that found Daniel Stiepleman writing a movie about a close family member who is both a political and judicial icon, let’s cover the most pressing news first. Stiepleman’s aunt, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, fell in her home on Thursday morning breaking three ribs. Stiepleman says “she’s good” and “From what I hear she’s shooing her doctors out of her room so she can get back to work.” So breathe easy.

Five months after the release of Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary “Rbg” — whose runaway success, at a staggering $14.3 million, all but confirms its subject’s unlikely rock-star status — and directly on the heels of justice Brett Kavanaugh’s contentious appointment to the Supreme Court comes “On the Basis of Sex,” a rousing origin story for the gender-equality pioneer many liberals hope will live forever (which world premiered as the AFI Fest opener the same day she fractured several ribs). Like last year’s “Marshall,” the engaging and well-acted, if not entirely well-cast, biopic humanizes a civil rights crusader who has since become an icon and a role model, focusing on the uphill battle of her early career.

With few modifications, “On the Basis of Sex” could have been made 30 years ago, and its rousing portrait of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would be a cheesy tearjerker with purpose. Today, it’s out of touch. Like the breakout summer documentary “Rbg,” director Mimi Leder’s upbeat tribute is an admirable salute to one woman’s determination against a sexist world, but the non-fiction treatment is forced into heavy-handed dramaturgy and becomes an antiquated soap opera.
The justice’s inspiring legal trajectory, as the pioneering women’s rights lawyer who challenged gender discrimination laws and eventually overturned them in a series of aggressive cases, has inspired generations. Unfortunately, released at the most divisive moments in American politics — a matter of weeks after the Supreme Court became a flashpoint for national outrage, and its longstanding commitment to nonpartisanship went kaput — “On the Basis of Sex” plays like a sunny...

John Krasinski is well on his way to making the sequel to “A Quiet Place.”
“I’m writing it now,” Krasinski told Variety Sunday at the 10th annual Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards. “I’ve mapped out an idea and hopefully it’s good enough to shoot … Paramount’s been unbelievably supportive and I’m just excited to have a second one and so we’ll see how it goes.”
Krasinski was on hand to present to his sound editors Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn. “Sound was everything to our movie,” Krasinski said. “I couldn’t have made this movie without them. Any sort of attention I get from the movie I owe to them. So I’m happy to be here for them.”
Presented by Los Angeles Confidential magazine and held this year at Exchange La, the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards recognize talent behind the scenes.

This awards season — to quote Sam Cooke — a change is gonna come, courtesy of Focus Features. Today at Deadline’s The Contenders Los Angeles, the distributor presented two of its timely contenders in Boy Erased (which bowed in theaters Friday) and AFI Fest opener On the Basis of Sex, dramas that concern themselves with those who demand change, and the fights that make progress possible.
Directed by Mimi Leder, On the Basis of Sex tells the story of young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones) and husband Marty (Armie Hammer), examining their struggles against gender discrimination and the obstacles Ginsburg overcame to become an iconic change leader. In the year of Ginsburg — which already has seen the Supreme Court justice celebrated with a successful summer documentary — Leder honors everything she has in common with her film’s subject. First, there were her own battles in her industry of choice, which she had to overcome.
