Stephen King loves Holly Gibney. First introduced in King's crime novel "Mr. Mercedes," book one of the Bill Hodges trilogy, she's returned in his work time and time again. She came back in the two other books in the trilogy: "Finders Keepers" and "End of Watch." Then she appeared in the novel "The Outsider" and the short story "If It Bleeds." Finally, she got a book of her own with "Holly," the newest novel King published (it came out in 2023; the ever-prolific King probably wrote four more novels in the time it will take me to finish this sentence).
Holly has been brought to the small screen twice already. She appeared in the "Mr. Mercedes" TV series, where she was played by Justine Lupe. Then she popped up again in the TV adaptation of "The Outsider," where Cynthia Erivo played the character. Now, Holly is headed to the small screen again,...

That writer from Maine is back at it again. Stephen King one of the most prolific authors in America, is back with a new novel. The novel is called “Holly”. The novel follows Holly Gibney. The character made her first appearance in Mr. Mercedes. She also appeared in Finders Keepers and End of Watch and later was a major supporting character in The Outsider.
“I could never let Holly Gibney go. She was supposed to be a walk-on character in Mr. Mercedes and she just kind of stole the book and stole my heart. Holly is all her.” —Stephen King.
According to his publisher, this is what Holly is all about: Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Readers have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but alive and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged,...

One of vampire fiction’s earliest works, Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu kicked off the genre almost 30 years before Bram Stoker’s Dracula hit bookshelves. The story is about a young woman who’s preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla. It’s the prototypical example of a lesbian vampire narrative, which, since its publication in 1872, has spawned direct adaptations and inspired many others’ stories. In this latest take on the novella, writer-director Emily Harris strips Carmilla of its vampiric roots. It does carry the dark tone of Le Fanu’s work, but it’s not a horror film, it’s a period romance. By removing it from the vampire canon, Harris unintentionally retreats to the depiction of lesbianism that was hotly criticized when lesbian vampire films first began.

MaryAnn’s quick take… This would-be modern Romeo-and-Juliet tale is little more than a pile-on of class stereotypes, contrived dialogue, and one whopper of a coincidence. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Arthur (Johnny Flynn) hails from a family of miners in Wales, and now works as a bike messenger in London. Vida (Lydia Wilson: Star Trek Beyond) is a cellist who makes no money from her music, but that’s okay because her rich parents have bought her an amazing apartment in trendy East London. Now, Johnny is moving into that flat with Vida, and the two families are about to culture-clash.
From the directing team of Emily Harris and Ate de Jong (he’s best known for the 1991 cult film Drop Dead Fred), Love Is Thicker Than Water wants to be a modern Romeo-and-Juliet tale.

This story about a couple who are brought back from the verge of breaking up by bereavements is overcomplex and indulgent
There are potentially interesting things in this love story, written by veteran Dutch film-maker Ate de Jong, and co-directed with British editor and director Emily Harris, who has worked with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and served as a consultant on the excellent documentary version of the V&A’s David Bowie exhibition.
This is a very personal, autobiographical story, pretty indulgent and sometimes a bit insufferable, with some jarringly hammy, misjudged notes. But there’s a good cast doing an honest job. Lydia Wilson and Johnny Flynn play Vida and Arthur, twentysomethings in love: one is a well-off Jewish Londoner, the other a working-class guy from Port Talbot. She’s a cellist; he’s a would-be animator. This fraught, live-in relationship is complicated further when they...

Authorities are trying to determine why a man identified as a patient fatally shot a caseworker at a hospital complex in a Philadelphia suburb and whether a psychiatrist who pulled out his own gun and wounded the gunman had concerns about him. The psychiatrist, Dr. Lee Silverman, was grazed in the temple during the gunfight in his office Thursday afternoon with patient Richard Plotts, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said. "We do believe that there were some issues between the doctor and the patient, but whether or not he actually feared him is unclear," Whelan said. Plotts, 49, was hospitalized in critical condition.
