Ray guns! Space armadas! Storm troopers! Toei's manga became a pricey 3-D animated motion capture epic just three years ago, but was denied a release stateside. This collector's disc set gives us rude 'n' raucous space battles, along with a pirate's bounty of original Japanese extras. Don't worry, the 3-D visuals are excellent. Anime fan favourite Space Pirate Captain Harlock stars in a new movie... but is it worth the wait?
If you're a fan of manga, you probably already know Harlock, although his fan following is much larger in France, Quebec and Japan. Harlock is the brainchild of Leiji Matsumoto (creator of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers). Harlock was created in the 50s, but his breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of the original television series, Space Pirate Captain Harlock. He has since then seen many incarnations, but he had been absent from our screens since 2002. Given the current trend of revisiting old franchise favourites, Harlock was bound to suffer the reboot treatment at one point. Harlock has already been rebooted several times over the years, long before the term "reboot" was actually coined, so it shouldn't have been a big deal, but some fans feared that Harlock's move to the big...

Look out for the ship … with the giant ramming skull! I’ve never actually heard of “Space Pirate Captain Harlock”, but then again, I’ve never heard of a lot of things. It looks pretty cool, though. So what is Space Pirate Captain Harlock, anyway? We’re told that it’s about the titular Captain Harlock, who “rebels against Earth’s inept government and fights for humanity with his crew of 40 aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia”. Apparently it started life as a Japanese manga in the late ’70s, became an animated TV series about the same time, and even inspired some big-screen movies. The trailer that you see below is for a new “Captain Harlock” CG movie directed by Shinji Aramaki and written by Harutoshi Fukui. Starring Yuu Aoi, Arata Furuta, Ayano Fukuda, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Maaya Sakamoto, Miyuki Sawashiro, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, and Chikao Ohtsuka, “Space Pirate Captain Harlock” is...

Another awesome new trailer has been released for the great looking CG animated film Captain Harlock: Space Pirate. The film may look like a video game cut scene, but it doesn't make it any less cool.
The story follows Captain Harlock as he fights for humanity with his 40 crew members aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia. I'm looking forward to checking this out as soon as it gets released, whenever that is.
The movie is an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series, which was created by Leiji Matsumoto in 1978 that eventually spawned a TV anime series, a few features, and the sequel called Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit Ssx.
The script was written by Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam Uc novels, live-action Bōkoku no Aegis) and was developed to reflect the themes of modern society. It was directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed). The movie should be released in Japan sometime this fall.

Toei Animation has updated the official site for the CG animated film adaptation of Space Pirate Captain Harlock with the second teaser. The video contains some new footage with one of the major set-pieces featuring the skull-emblazoned starship Arcadia launching its infamous ram attack.Based on the 70s space opera manga by Matsumoto Leiji that spawned various anime interpretations, the original storyline centers on a rebellious space pirate and his outlaw crew preventing the alien plant women known as the Mazone from conquering Earth. The sci-fi reboot will be helmed by Aramaki Shinji (Appleseed Ex Machina) and scripted by Harutoshi Fukui, with the animation produced by Marza Animation Planet. Boasting a hefty $30 million production budget, Toei will utilize the latest filmmaking technology to present the...

Even if you’re not a fan of manga anime, it’s well worth it to watch. Based on the original space opera anime Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Leiji Matsumoto’s manga character is being brought to CGI life in a new theatrical flick from Toei Animation.
Directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) from a script by Mobile Suit Gundam Uc author Harutoshi Fukui, the story follows Captain Harlock as he fights for humanity with his 40 crew members aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia.
The 1978 Matsumoto’s manga initiated a TV anime series, a few features, and the 1982 sequel called ‘Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit Ssx.’
Despite the fact that this new Captain Harlock CG feature is technically an adaptation, the film still follows the same story and the look of the character is even similar, though decidedly darker than the original 1978 Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

Even if you're not a fan of manga, you should watch this. Below, you'll find the trailer for the CG-Animated film Space Pirate Captain Harlock , an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series of the same name. Though the property was first created in 1978 by Leiji Matsumoto, a feature film of the series has never been made, until now. At the 2010 Tokyo International Anime Fair, the trailer to Space Pirate Captain Harlock was screened inside the Toei Animation booth and fortunately for us, a sneaky fellow has captured the footage on video camera and uploaded it online. The 4-minute pilot trailer was directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed Ex Machina), characters designed by Yutaka Minowa (Ninja Scroll), written by Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam Uc) and the animation was produced by Marza Animation Planet (formerly Sega Sammy Visual Entertainment). For those not familiar with the source material, its based on a space opera manga by Leiji Matsumoto which was then adapted into an anime series. I'll let Wikipedia explain the plot:
In the future, Mankind has achieved a vast starfaring civilization, but is slowly and steadily succumbing to ennui or despair, often due to defeat and subjugation by a foreign invader. Rising against the general apathy, Harlock denies defeat and...
