French-born, La-living filmmaker Alexandre Nahon premieres his directorial debut, Burning Shadow, tonight at the Miami Beach Cinematheque as part of its Art Basel screening series. The film, which has been described as having a Lynch or Cronenbergian vibe, is a take on one of my favorite storylines — the doppelganger tale, this time set in a City of Angels neo-noir universe. Filmmaker readers will recognize Nahon from his roles in Julie Delpy’s 2 Days films. Five years after Julie Delpy introduced her neurotic character Marion and her oddball family in 2 Days in Paris, the actress/writer/director reunites several of the same characters in the romantic comedy 2 Days in New York, opening in Austin this week.
Unfortunately Delpy's real-life mother Marie Pillet, who played Marion's mom in the first film, passed away in 2009. However, Delpy's father Albert Delpy returns as Marion's eccentric father Jeannot, with Alexia Landeau along as Marion's boyfriend-stealing sister Rose. Ex-boyfriend Manu (Alexandre Nahon) also makes an appearance, but he's less suave and more buffoonish than in the first film, and even fat family cat Jean-Luc makes a cameo.
Marion is no longer with her neurotic boyfriend Jack from 2 Days in Paris, and continues to live in New York with their child as well as new American boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock) and his daughter. When Marion's family travels to New York and stays in their small apartment,...

Review by Le Movie Snob
I really wanted to like this movie.
I like Julie Delpy.
I like that she took an unexpected Johnny Depp-like career turn upon first becoming successful: she decided not to let her stunning looks lull her into a guaranteed successful, complacent career.
She moved to a foreign country, mastered English, and didn’t just say she was going to direct, she really did direct and wrote a successful screenplay (Before Sunset). And she proved a triple threat: writing directing, and starring in 2 Days in Paris which was a nicely paced, accurately funny depiction of the Franco-American culture clash.
Understandably, I had high expectations for her follow up. Hence, the fall was steep.
Here’s what I wasn’t expecting at all:
I wasn’t expecting to be bored by Chris Rock.
I wasn’t expecting to hate French people.

Chicago – Julie Delpy’s “2 Days in New York” is an amenable screwball comedy with some jokes that definitely fall flat and some awkward emotional beats in the final act but a likable tone that allows for easy passage over the screenwriting rough spots. Ms. Delpy is still charming and co-star Chris Rock is more effective here than he typically is in film. It’s just a likable little movie without pretension to be anything more.
The film is a sequel to Delpy’s “2 Days in Paris,” in which she played half of a couple with Adam Goldberg as they spent some awkward moments in the city of lights. This time, Goldberg is gone as Margot has moved on from that relationship and travelled with her son to New York, where she has fallen in love with a radio talk show host named Mingus (Rock). Title: 2 Days in New York Director: Julie Delpy Starring: Julie Delpy, Chris Rock, Albert Delpy, Alexia Landeau, Alex Nahon, Dylan Baker, Kate Burton, Malinda Williams Nobody can push buttons of exasperation and pull levers of hair-trigger emotional reaction quite like family — those folks who know all of the faces of the past you’ve tried to shake and shed. That truth is borne out in Julie Delpy’s witty, winning new comedy of relationships and culture-clash, “2 Days in New York.” A nominal follow-up to 2007′s “2 Days in Paris,” in which Delpy played the same character with a different love interest, this rather delightful romp eschews complicated plotting to [ Read More ]...

Editor’s note: With 2 Days in New York opening in limited release this Friday, here is a re-run of our review from Sundance, when it was the only film that could perk an exhausted Kate up on Festival Day 26. This review was originally posted on January 29, 2012. Picking up a few years where her 2 Days in Paris left off, Julie Delpy‘s 2 Days in New York has moved the sometimes-messy life of Marion (Delpy) to Gotham. Marion has now taken up with Mingus (Chris Rock, playing a pitch-perfect straight man), a former co-worker who offered dry humor and personal understanding when her previous relationship crumbled. The pair live together in a cozy and artistic apartment, joined by Marion’s young son Lulu (Owen Shipman) and Mingus’ daughter Willow (Talen Ruth Riley). As calm and lovely as their life together seems, everything is about to be tested over a brief two-day period, marked...

2 Days in New York
Written by Julie Delpy and Alexia Landeau
Directed by Julie Delpy
France/Germany/Belgium, 2012
Julie Delpy’s 2 Days in Paris, which documented her character’s struggling relationship with American boyfriend Jack (Adam Goldberg) while visiting her home city of Paris, was a rewarding comedy with pleasing one-note simplicity. Arriving five years later and set four years after, 2 Days in New York operates both as a sequel to that film and as a standalone entity. Disregarding the streamlined focus of the first film, this follow-up takes on an array of often soft targets and disappointingly favours a much broader brand of humour that isn’t nearly as successful.
Delpy’s Marion conceived a son with Jack during the interim between films, but they have since split up and Marion is now living with Chris Rock’s Mingus, who has a daughter of his own. Marion’s established...

Magnolia Pictures' 2 Days in New York has 2 new clips for the comedy starring Chris Rock, July Delpy, Albert Delpy, Alexia Landeau, Alexandre Nahon, Kate Burton, Dylan Baker and Daniel Brühl. The film opens on July 6th on VOD and is helmed by July Delpy who scripts alongside Alexia Landeau. In 2 Days in New York, Marion and Mingus live cozily—perhaps too cozily—with their cat and two young children from previous relationships. However, when Marion’s jolly father (played by director Delpy’s real-life dad), her oversexed sister, and her sister’s outrageous boyfriend unceremoniously descend upon them for a visit, it initiates two unforgettable days that will test Marion and Mingus’s relationship. With their unwitting racism and sexual frankness, the French triumvirate hilariously has no boundaries or filters...and no person is left unscathed in its wake.

2 Days in Paris, written and directed by its star, Julie Delpy, is not exactly a film crying out for a sequel. Apt it is that Delpy, again taking up writing, directing and acting duties for 2 Days in New York, has opted to eschew the typical follow-up format. Employing that very French brand of quirkiness to potent effect, Delpy grills both sides of the pond with scathing wit, and provides an unexpected vehicle for co-star Chris Rock to flex his dramatic chops.
Since the previous film, Marion (Delpy) has split up with Jack (Adam Goldberg, who only appears by mention in this film) and now lives in New York with their young son, Lulu. Cohabiting with boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock) has proven fruitful, that is until Marion’s family, consisting of father Jeannot (Delpy’s actual father, Albert), sister Rose (Alexia Landeau) and Rose’s boyfriend Manu (Alex Nahon) come to visit.

Julie Delpy turns her hand to multitasking once more (she’s credited as co-producer, co-write, director, and star) as she reprises his role of the perilously romantic artist Marion in this slight, yet witty and engaging follow up to 2007’s 2 Days in Paris.
As the title suggests, Marion has now swapped her Parisian domicile for an apartment in the Big Apple which she shares with her young son (whose father was her boyfriend in ‘Paris’) a cat and new bloke Mingus (Chris Rock, completed with hipster goatee) and his young daughter.
The couple’s peaceful existence is severely tested when Marion’s brash and uncouth family pay a visit from over the pond. Having to contend with her forward younger sister Rose (Alexia Landeau), her elderly, rambunctious father (played by Delpy’s real-life Pops, Albert) and Rose’ obnoxious boyfriend Mau (Alexandre Nahon) places a strain on her and Mingus’ relationship.

Taking place a few years after “2 Days in Paris,” with the events from that film summed up in a puppet show, Jack (played Adam Goldberg) is gone and Marion (Delpy) lives in New York with her boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock) and their respective children from previous relationships. Both lead artistic New York lives as Marion is about to open a photo exhibit and Mingus is writing for the Village Voice along with hosting two radio shows. Marion's father Jeannot (Albert Delpy) and sister Rose (Alexia Landeau) are coming to New York to spend time as a family following the death of Marion's mother. The promise of foreign customs and crazy old men is fulfilled the second we meet Dad, locked in customs and removing the sausages he strapped to his chest.

The Sundance Institute and The O2 announced today the programme of 14 narrative and documentary feature films that will make their UK premieres at the inaugural Sundance London festival, taking place at The O2 from 26-29 April. These films premiered in January at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah – the premier independent film festival in the United States.

He went on to add, “Sundance London also is the perfect opportunity to continue our long-time commitment to growing a broader international community around new voices and new perspectives.”

Park City, Ut – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today they have acquired North American rights to 2 Days In New York, a delightful and sophisticated follow-up to her 2007 hit, 2 Days in Paris. 2 Days In New York stars Delpy, Chris Rock, Delpy’s real life father Albert Delpy, and was produced by Christophe Mazodier. A witty comedy about relationships, art, and clashing cultures, 2 Days In New York picks up again with Marion (Delpy), now living in New York City with her attentive boyfriend Mingus (Rock), each with a child from a previous relationship. Their idyllic lifestyle is turned upside-down when Marion’s eccentric father comes to stay for a few days, along with Marion’s oversexed sister (Alexia Landeau) and her sleazy boyfriend (Alex Nahon)—and proceed to drive Mingus absolutely crazy. Magnolia will release the film through its Ultra VOD program later this year, with a robust theatrical release in major markets.

Julie Delpy made quite the impression on me in her seminal Sundance film Before Sunrise and its sequel, Before Sunset. She's back at this year's festival, this time as a writer/director of a different sequel, 2 Days in New York. Following the events of 2 Days in Paris, Delpy plays Marion, a single mom who has moved in with her boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock), who has a child of his own from a previous relationship. Marion is a photographer, and her exhibition is set to happen in the same week her father Jeannot (played by Delpy's real father, Albert Delpy) and sister Rose (Alexia Landeau, who co-wrote this film) fly in to visit from France. Also in tow is Manu (Alexandre Nahon), Rose's impetuous dolt of a boyfriend who used to date Marion.
While the movie features some of the hallmarks of the Before... series, I didn't like this one nearly as much.

It's a sequel, of course, to 2 Days in Paris, but Salon's Andrew O'Hehir, introducing an interview with Julie Delpy and Chris Rock, assures us that "it really doesn't matter whether you've seen the earlier movie. Jack, the American boyfriend played by Adam Goldberg in 2 Days in Paris, has evidently moved on (leaving behind a young son), and Delpy's character, Marion, is now shacking up with a Village Voice journalist and radio host named Mingus, who has a daughter of his own. (Rock even says the character is based on the prominent African-American journalists Nelson George and Elvis Mitchell.) Rock gets some decent laugh lines, but he isn't doing improv or stand-up material here — although he does deliver two monologues to a cardboard cutout of Barack Obama."
What sets the story in motion is the arrival of Marion's family from Paris for an extended stay. The Boston Globe's Ty Burr: "Dad (Albert Delpy,...

Toh reports that actor/writer/director/provocateur Vincent Gallo has signed on to star in Don’t Shoot the Piano Player, which based on the 1956 novel Down There by David Goodis. This will be the second adaptation of Goodis‘ novel, with the other being iconic director François Truffaut‘s 1960 take on the material, Shoot the Piano Player. Here, Gallo will play a Hollywood composer (originally a classical pianist in both the novel and the 1960 movie) who “loses it all.” What that means exactly in this new version is up in the air, but, in the French adaptation, it all revolved around the suicide of the main character’s wife, which I assume will be the instigating event once again. Michael Rapaport is also being eyed for a role as a gangster, and talks should end with him relatively soon.

As a Hollywood ad man from the early 60s through the early 90s, Merv Bloch developed campaigns for dozens and dozens of major motion pictures (here's the tip of the iceberg), and he's got stories to tell, names to drop and photos to point to when Steve Macfarlane drops by his Upper West Side office for an interview for the L. "Bloch grew up in Manhattan; as a high school student, he caught word that a movie was being shot in his apartment building. He perched himself in a corner and, for hours, watched a scene reworked ad nauseum by a lanky, nasal-voiced director in his early 20s: it was Stanley Kubrick, shooting Killer's Kiss." The fun begins. Bloch produced but one feature, Nelson Lyon's The Telephone Book (1971), which he described in 2009 as "a dark comedy about a girl who falls in love with the world's greatest obscene phone call.

At least in our eyes, any news on the enigma that is Vincent Gallo is good news. His performance as the titular, tortured artist in Francis Ford Coppola's "Tetro" was a welcome reminder just how much the talened writer/director/actor/musician has to offer and, while he's unfortunately already noted that his last effort behind the camera "Promises Written In The Water" isn't going to see a theatrical release anytime soon, he's recently been taking on interesting acting roles with Jerzy Skolimowski's "Essential Killing," a sure-to-be wacky part in "The Legend Of Kaspar Hauser" as well as an appearance in 'Twilight' actor Peter Facinelli's "Loosies." Gallo now looks to have added another lead role to his plate, as Thompson On Hollywood reports he's set to star in Alexandre Nahon's adaptation of David Goodis' "Down There" -- a novel previously adapted by Francois...

Picking up quite a few years down the road from 2 Days In Paris, Marion (Julie Delpy) has left Jack (Adam Goldberg) and started a life with Mingus (Chris Rock) and their previous children in 2 Days in New York. With her art gallery exhibit coming up and her father, sister and unexpected guest flying in from France, Delpy’s life is about to become even more frantic as she entertains while balancing her own hectic family life.
Serving as writer, director, producer and star again here, Delpy returns with her witty, fast-paced dialogue as she examines more language-barrier, social situation comedy. Following a well-executed flashback showing the catalyst for Mingus and Marion’s relationship, things get moving pretty fast as one would expect in a new film from Delpy. Her family arrives, including the returning father (the adorable Albert Delpy, also real-life dad to Julie), perpetually aroused sister (Alexia Landeau) and...

Beloved alum Julie Delpy was back at Sundance last night to unveil her new film, 2 Days in New York, a sequel to 2007′s 2 Days in Paris in which her crazy French family comes to visit her and her new live-in boyfriend played by Chris Rock. Marion and Mingus make an unexpected couple, but Delpy, who directed and co-wrote the script, said after the screening that Rock was her only choice. “I realized I couldn’t have a sequel to this film with the same boyfriend because it would be too much like Sunset/Sunrise,” she told a packed house at...

Just about every film at Sundance is a world premiere. So why is there a "Premieres" section, and how is it different than the Competition or the Spotlight or the New Frontiers or the Next or...okay, I think that's all of them. Sundance describes Premieres as "a showcase of some of the most highly anticipated dramatic films of the coming year from new and established directors" and Documentary Premieres as "about big subjects or by master filmmakers that showcase the power of the form."
Basically, what it really means is here's where you find the attention-grabbers at Sundance. These are the big honking movies, the movies featuring Hollywood directors and talent coming down from their Valhalla of craft services and video village to get their hands dirty with the independents. These are the movies that have the biggest red carpets and the majority of the press coverage (see this post).

The Sundance Film Festival (apart from Venice) remains the only major film festival that we have not yet had a chance to fully cover. Hopefully 2012 will change that situation. It is one of our goals for next year and so you should be seeing a lot of Sundance posts for the next two or so months.
Sundance has just announced their Feature and Documentary Premieres for next months line-up and it of course includes notable stand-outs including Spike Lee‘s latest Red Hook Summer, Stephen Frears‘ Lay the Favourite, Josh Radnor‘s sophomore effort, Liberal Arts with Elizabeth Olson and Joe Berlinger‘s latest documentary on Paul Simon. In other words, if you are lucky enough to attend the festival, now is the time to get even more excited.

Sundance Unveils Midnight, Next And New Frontier Films 2012 Sundance Film Festival Sets Competition Slate The 2012 Sundance Film Festival has filled out the film schedule with a Premieres lineup of features and documentaries that add some star power to the festival. As Deadline reported last week, the festival added the Stephen Frears-directed Bruce Willis-starrer Lay The Favorite as well as a film by Julie Delpy, another that stars Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, and another with Bradley Cooper. Most of the films come without distribution, so they will add to what is being forecast as potentially heavy dealmaking. Sundance will have some heavyweight auteurs in the shape of Spike Lee, Rodrigo Cortés, James Marsh and Stephen Frears for the Premieres Section. Among the 15 selected titles, worth highlighting are Leslye Headland’s debut, "Bachelorette" which stars Kirsten Dunst, we’ve got Julie Delpy’s 2 Days in New York and a Blacklist favorite in Celeste and Jesse Forever. Count on Lee’s Red Hook Summer, Cortés’ Red Lights, Marsh’s Shadow Dancer and Frears’ Lay the Favorite to garner the most buzz. Though Sundance tends to be stereotyped as the place for heavy, dour stories of shattered lives, it’s actually a great place for comedies. Think Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine, The Kids Are All Right, and last year ‘s Our Idiot Brother and Cedar Rapids.
This year the non-competition premieres section is heavy with comedies, most of them fueled by women, among them Kirsten Dunst, Rashida Jones, Julie Delpy, Rebecca Hall, Ari Graynor and Parker Posey.
“There are lots of big female-driven comedies of different sorts. Everything from Julie Delpy’s 2 Days in New York, to [Dunst’s] Bachelorette and [Graynor’s] For a Good Time Call,...
