Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft.
A Yak with Dak
Dak uses the Upfront space to plug alternative/independent comics, whilst also going out of his way to say Comics Interview strives to include them. Personally, I feel he is selling himself short in that regard. In the eight issues I have looked at so far, I feel the alternatives/indies have had decent representation. Look at #6 you had Berke Breathed talking Bloom County right alongside huge fanboy porn in the shape of Jla vs The Avengers! Comico was featured last time out, and the comics of First have been featured. It would be interesting to see how the early days of those two, their success and...

On September 18, 1964, a serious animated adventure series, demonstrating cartoons didn’t have to always be comical such as The Flintstones (still airing then on ABC). Instead, Jonny Quest captured the sense of exploration Americans were longing for thanks to the Mercury astronauts and the rising tide of espionage films, headed by James Bond. However, Jonny was a young boy, making him an ideal feature for the Friday at 7:30 p.m. slot.
While the 26 episodes are all that were produced, the show’s overall quality proved influential to subsequent generations of animators, comic book storytellers, and audiences. It has pretty much remained in syndication for the last forty years. Jonny Quest remained the benchmark for dramatic animated fare for decades, enjoying brief runs as a comic book (notably Comico’s 1980s run).

Eric Powell’s The Goon is a one-of-a-kind comic book character, a brawny, unconstructed lug who has a dive-bar soul and an alley-fight face. This year, remarkably, is the 20th anniversary of the cult character, who has tussled along he way with ghouls, a giant squid, mobsters, mutants, deranged scientists, demons, and a pie-eating skunk ape. For the award-winning Powell, the anniversary celebration has been chance to connect with fans (with an ambitious book tour and a barrage of tie-in releases) as well as peers (through a bevy of unprecedented collaborations).
In the all-new Goon comic book series now underway, Powell has teased that he would be joined by some notable names from the comics world. For issue No. 5, which goes on sale July 31, the writing chores were divided by Powell and Thomas Sniegoski (The Fallen) while the illustrations are by Brett Parson (Tank Girl). Powell himself drew the main...

It would seem there is only one place to start this week. Last week Detective Comics reached issue 1000! It is the second DC title to reach the significant landmark after Action Comics in 2017. We could argue all day about which character is more important/more popular but really we should be celebrating two icons still having such big impacts today.
I remember it being a big deal when DC launched the New 52. People were saying the company wide reboot would not be taken seriously if Detective and Action comics didn’t start with new number ones. It seems like only yesterday that Action Comics #1000 hit stands, thus observing 80 years of Superman being in continuous publication. As it so happens, the other half of the World’s Finest duo, Batman, will get his turn in the spotlight when Detective Comics #1000 ships this coming spring.
By now, you’ve probably heard of one major reason you should read the milestone issue, and that’s how it’ll introduce a new version of the Arkham Knight to DC canon, one whom we can only assume isn’t Jason Todd. Still, the mystery man’s appearance is eerily similar to that of his video game counterpart, and can be viewed in the gallery below.
In addition to our first look at the newest thorn in the Dark Knight’s side, a bounty of covers can also be found in the accompanying slideshow. Chief among them is the standard wraparound supplied by the master himself,...

Detective Comics #1000 will feature a who's who of legendary Batman creators. Here are the details...
Batman didn't tie the knot last summer, but he still has plenty to celebrate in 2019. In May, the Caped Crusader turns 80 after his debut in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. And there's another milestone: Detective Comics, one of the books that formed the backbone of the publisher we know today as DC Comics, is hitting its 1,000th issue in March. To mark the occasion, DC is publishing an extra-sized issue featuring many of the great creators who have worked on the Dark Knight over the years.
The issue will feature a story from the current Detective Comics creative team of Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Mahnke that will introduce a new version of the Arkham Knight, the villain from the Batman: Arkham Knight video game, to the comics. The issue will also feature a...

Comics has not been a terribly fertile ground for good science fiction. Oh, there’s been a lot of space opera, since comics are excellent at depicting coruscating beams of lambent force striking overwhelmed ray-screens and control panels exploding with showers of colorful sparks. But actual stories about people and their societies, in which the details of the future world are both carefully designed and important? That’s not something comics gets into all that often.
Nexus is one of the towering exceptions. It was one of the first wave of “ground-level” comics in the late ’70s and early ’80s, part of the flood that eventually became “independent comics.” And, like a lot of things in that wave, it clearly was derived from popular ideas in mainstream comics, taking a different look at the costumed superpowered hero as Elfquest and Cerebus did the same with the fantasy adventure.

DC Comics have of late been celebrating the 80th anniversary of both a flagship title, in Action Comics, and their flagship character, Superman. Both are, of course, fully worthy of such accolades. Action Comics has been continuously published since the dawn of the comic book industry, and without Superman there would possibly be no comic book industry. He was the spark that lit the flame. I have already reviewed DC’s 80 Years of Superman book, which was a love letter to every decade of Superman’s adventures, cherry picking some of the many high points from the 1930′s to the present day. It was very much a look back at Action Comics greatest hits, and a great reminder it was too. But what about the future?

I like crowds. I like big noisy events. State fairs? Love ‘em. Black Friday shopping days? I’m there. Live music with tiny crowded dance floors? Sounds good to me. San Diego Comic Con? Yeah, baby. Ditto The New York Comic Con.
But on the other hand, when I’m thinking about Geek Culture and comic conventions, I find that I also enjoy small comic conventions. There’s a certain charm, an aura of creativity and a sense of community that embraces you in a unique way that you won’t find at NYC’s Javits Center.
I had to cancel out of this past weekend’s WonderCon in Anaheim, California. That was a drag as I was looking forward to being a panelist on Rik Offenberger’s Marketing/PR panel. But I haven’t been on a convention hiatus; lately, I have been busy finding and attending them. For consecutive weekends,...

With Fox's Kingsman: The Secret Service hitting retailers on Blu-ray, DVD and digital HD, we thought it would be a great time to share my recent interview with Kingsman co-creator and illustrator Dave Gibbons. Gibbons is one of the most influential artists in comics, working on titles like Watchmen and 2000 Ad, but he is also a great writer, having written for such titles as "Worlds Finest" with artist Steve Rude and "Captain America" with artist Lee Weeks. Gibbons also continues to collaborate with some of the finest writers in the industry including Frank Miller and Stan Lee. What about the significant differences from the comic? As a comic book writer/artist you have to make the best comic you...

DC Comics releases what I consider to be the best of the controversial prequels to one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all time with Before Watchmen: Ozymandias /Crimson Corsair Deluxe Edition. The hardcover collection contains issues 1 through 6 of Before Watchmen: Ozymandias, the entire run of Crimson Corsair stories, and the Dollar Bill one-shot. The Crimson Corsair storyline spread out across several of the different Before Watchmen titles.
The real highlight of the Before Watchmen: Ozymandias /Crimson Corsair Deluxe Edition is Adrian Veidt's backstory. Watchmen editor Len Wein takes a character I found to be the least interesting in the original graphic novel and completely change my mind about him. When the entire prequel event came to a close, Before Watchmen: Ozymandias reigned supreme as my favorite title. Wein digs so deep into the character's psyche and gives the reader an insight into how a man's ego can drive...

Comic: Dollar Bill #1
Written By: Len Wien
Pencils By: Steve Rude
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: Out Now In Stores & Digital Download (Via Comixology)
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Dollar Bill. You know the name but if it doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the guy from the original Watchmen who got his cape caught in a revolving doors and then ended up gunned down by the crooks he was chasing. It’s a small part of Watchmen but somehow that image sticks and has followed through other superhero comics and a films as something that could very well happen to a caped hero.
This one shot, which feels distinctly old school with it’s art and writing style, tells the tale of Bill Brady. A failed athlete and failing actor who becomes the poster boy for some big money men to cash in on the current super hero craze.

I first saw Nexus at one of those ancient Chicago Minicons we used to run at the beautiful and even ancienter Congress Hotel. The Minicon was an intense show held roughly every month, no matter the weather or the proximity of the latest Chicago Bears game. We had about 75 dealers tables, admission cost 75¢, our dealers and attendees drove in from a 350 mile radius, and the whole thing was over within five hours; less, if the Bears were playing that Sunday.
Our guests came from a similar radius, and frequently you’d see Jill Thompson, John Byrne, John Ostrander, Joe Staton, Paul Kupperberg, and a dozen or more at the tables near the entrance… as well as more than a few who were breaking into the business. Mike Baron, who lived about 80 miles north in Madison Wisconsin, was one such newbee, and when they launched their magazine-sized Nexus #1, he and artist...
