Delroy Lindo is heading back to the big screen.
The actor, who in recent years has starred in Hulu’s Unprisoned and appeared in Netflix’s The Harder They Fall, has closed a deal to join Michael B. Jordan in the untitled supernatural horror thriller that Ryan Coogler is directing for Warner Bros.
Little is known about that project — and what is known has yet to be confirmed by either the studio or Coogler. Insiders say the feature is set in the Jim Crow-era South, and possibly involves both vampires and Southern supernatural traditions. Jordan may be playing dual roles — as twin brothers.
Lindo’s part is being kept in the coffin but one source describes it as having a musical element to it. The feature is gearing for shoot later this spring in New Orleans, and recently cast Jack O’Connell as a villain.

Emmy-nominated animated program “Entergalactic” is set amid a vibrant New York City. Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi voices Jabari, a graffiti artist who has just moved into a new Manhattan apartment after being hired by a comic book company.
He’s just broken up with his ex, Carmen (voiced by Laura Harrier), because he’s too busy to have a personal relationship until he meets his neighbor, Meadow (voiced by Jessica Williams).
In building Jabari’s world, production designer Robh Ruppel created a “blank canvas” for his loft since the character has just moved in. The walls are white, boxes still fill the room, and Jabari’s bike sits against a wall. However, as the story progresses, those boxes become fewer and the space stars to become more personal. Ruppel’s key was how he used color. “You can’t have it everywhere,” he says. “To show a sad evening alone,...

For Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, known professionally as Kid Cudi, Netflix’s animated music special Entergalactic offered more than just the opportunity to create visuals for his 2022 studio album of the same name. It was a break, says executive producer Karina Manashil, from the traditional process of a label giving an artist “two music videos, and you have to move on to the next.” Created by Mescudi and Kenya Barris, Entergalactic is a New York-set rom-com-style story with a painterly visual style that follows an artist named Jabari (voiced by Mescudi) as he attempts to balance his career and love with “It” girl Meadow (voiced by Jessica Williams).
“Creating Entergalactic the [show] actually unlocked something for Kid Cudi, the artist,” says Manashil. “There’s often an expectation of the sound your fans want to hear, and the more you put out, the more specificity they have about what they want to listen to next.

Following the announcement of the 2023 Emmy nominations, former Best Animated Program odds leader “The Simpsons” swiftly dropped to second place behind “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal,” which a significant majority of users now predict will be lauded for its second season after winning for its first in 2021. As it fends off “The Simpsons,” which remains strong in its fight for its 12th victory, it also faces two more past winners and a new show from Netflix, which produced last year’s victor.
Since reigning champ “Arcane” has yet to return for a second season, Netflix’s hopes of conquering this category again lie with “Entergalactic,” the first stand-alone special to compete for this award since 2017. Rounding out the lineup are “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty,” each of which has already taken the prize twice.
In order to make sense of this tight race, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Entergalactic, the animated special from Kid Cudi that served as an accompaniment to his album, is battling for an Emmy.
The one-off program has scored an Emmy nomination Outstanding Animated Program, where it will compete against Bob’s Burgers, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, Rick And Morty and The Simpsons.
It comes after Netflix pulled off a surprise win last year for Arcane, based on the video game, which became the first streaming series to win in the category.
Entergalactic was created by Kid Cudi, who voices Jabari, a charming, streetwear clad artist on the cusp of success. After a chance run-in with his cool new photographer neighbor, Meadow, voiced by Jessica Williams, Jabari has to figure out whether he can make space for love in his life.
It also features the voices of Timothée Chalamet, Vanessa Hudgens, Jaden Smith and Macauley Culkin. The series is produced by Mad Solar, Khalabo Ink Society and Edelgang.

“Entergalactic,” Netflix’s animated Emmy hopeful created by singer/rapper Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Kenya Barris, marks another “Spider-Verse”-influenced breakthrough that stretches the bounds of illustrative 2D to 3D stylization. The aesthetic presents New York City as moving concept art for a modern love story about two artists, Jabari (voiced by Mescudi) and Meadow (voiced by Jessica Williams), presented as a series in five chapters.
Production designer Robh Ruppel (who provided visual development for “Into the Spider-Verse”) did the illustrative world-building in collaboration with director Fletcher Moules and London-based animation studio Dneg, which rewrote its pipeline to translate the concept art into a handmade look. This spanned animation, shading, lighting, compositing, and rendering.
“The free-flowing style fit the idea about an artist in New York,” Ruppel told IndieWire. “So we wanted to portray the world in an artistic fashion that helps illustrate the story.” Creating the concept art conveys the aesthetic through composition,...

After hearing early demos from Kid Cudi, director Fletcher Moules knew he could connect with the vision of bringing a visual album to life through animation. Serving as an animated companion piece to Kid Cudi’s album of the same name, Entergalactic follows street artist Jabari (Cudi) as he is on the cusp of bringing his art to life in comics. His life changes when he falls for his neighbor Meadow (Jessica Williams), a photographer about to stage an exhibition. It was important for Moules that this special be a character-driven concept album, rather than one long music video, so the story and animation style were essential to get right.
‘Entergalactic’
Deadline: Where did the concept for Entergalactic come from?
Fletcher Moules: [Kid] Cudi had the idea. “Entergalactic” was the name of one of his songs from many years ago on an early album, and he wanted to visualize his music.

Karina Manashil, the executive producer of Netflix’s animated film “Entergalactic,” says that the project was not initially intended by Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi to be animated. “In terms of creating a holistic visual interpretation of his music, there wasn’t really an opportunity to do that. So ‘Entergalactic’ was really birthed out of this idea of how do we create a holistic experience,” Mahashil tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: TV Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
When brainstorming with Kenya Barris, the idea of doing an animated anthological sequence with each segment being inspired by a song started moving the needle. “Music tethered to animation doesn’t have the lifecycle of just an, an album, but really can live in perpetuity and be something that people continue to come back to and one of the anthological episodes we had was this animated love story and decided,...

Olivia found a way to come out on the other side of her grief.
For others, it was not so much the case on All American Season 5 Episode 13.
After the memorial service on All American Season 5 Episode 12, Olivia stared at the liquor bottle she had found in Billy's desk drawer in his football office.
She took it home and has been communing with it for the next two weeks. That probably wasn't the wisest keepsake of her father for her to grab. She was holding onto her sobriety but just barely.
Then Olivia reached her breaking point and smartly woke up Jordan and Layla to hang out with her and to keep her from drinking.
At least Olivia recognized that she needed help to maintain her sobriety. She used what Alcoholics Anonymous had taught her and called in her "village" because she would need them during this particularly tough patch.

Daniel Ezra says Monday’s episode of The CW’s “All American” should have come with a “warning” for fans, as viewers saw characters continue to grieve the loss of Coach Billy Baker as well as witnessed Spencer make a shocking decision.
While portraying Spencer onscreen, Ezra was also working behind the camera as director for episode 13. This was Ezra’s second go at directing, with his directorial debut being Season 4’s twelfth episode. The actor says he felt “more confident this time around.”
“It’s a whole other kind of pressure,” Ezra told TheWrap ahead of the episode’s premiere. “I prepped any time I wasn’t acting in the coming weeks before I was directing — whether that be scripts, my knowledge of camera shots, angles and sizes. I went overboard on prep, so when it came to quote-unquote ‘game day,’ I was ready for anything.”

“It’s not another superhero movie,” Camille Friend, the hair department lead on both “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” says of Ryan Coogler’s Marvel sequel. “It’s a movie with heart, with soul, and we care about what is happening on the screen and behind the screen, and we have people of color [on both sides]. And we can do excellence in a movie — we do that.”
An Oscar nominee for her work on “Wakanda Forever,” Friend estimates that probably 95 percent of the “Black Panther” crew returned for the sequel’s shoot in Atlanta in summer of 2021. And it was a tough return for everyone after Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman, died of cancer less than a year earlier.

When it comes to Taye Diggs and his All American character Coach Billy Baker, death doesn’t necessarily have to mean the end, at least according to showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll. Diggs’ character was killed off in the latest episode of the CW series, which saw him sacrifice himself to save Jabari (Simeon Daise) after the team bus crashed over the edge of a cliff. However, despite this heroic yet tragic ending, it doesn’t mean viewers won’t ever see Coach Baker again. “I have ongoing conversations with all of my cast every season, so there’s nothing that ever comes out of the blue,” Carroll told The Wrap regarding Diggs’ exit. “We never had any delusions that we’d be able to hold onto Taye for 12 seasons or anything like that.” “I was just like, ‘Whenever the time comes where it feels like the character has served his purpose,...

Billy Baker may be gone, but his impact will linger in Beverly Hills and especially South Crenshaw.
Billy may be resting in peace now, but as All American Season 5 Episode 12 showed, everyone else was coping with their grief in their ways.
And, not surprisingly, the one who was having the most trouble dealing was Laura.
That's understandable. Things had been going great for her and Billy. And his death was so unexpected and just so Billy.
The community's coach went back on a bus teetering on the edge of a cliff because he was convinced that Jabari was still on it.
Jabari's alive, and Billy's dead. That's a lot of guilt to heap on a young man just about to graduate from high school, largely thanks to Billy's guidance.
Laura blowing up just because Jabari showed up to pay his respects at the repast certainly didn't help matters on that front.

Welp, this is going to be a tearjerker.
The only thing tougher than Billy's (Taye Diggs) death is how everyone picks up the pieces in the aftermath.
The CW shared a promo for All American Season 5 Episode 12, and it will be a difficult hour for fans and their favorite characters.
"When an unexpected event rocks both the Beverly Hills and Crenshaw communities, they come together to support each other in an unexpected way," the official logline for "The Lost One" reads.
The trailer shows everyone in a somber mood as they prepare for Billy's funeral.
Laura (Monet Mazur) questions why many people should be invited to the funeral.
If you watch All American online, you know Billy was the father figure for all of the characters, something that took him away from his family at times.
Laura believes that she shared Billy with everyone in life and would prefer his funeral to be a smaller,...

Taye Diggs is bowing out of The CW's All American.
During Monday's shocking All American Season 5 Episode 11 (read full review), a bus carrying some of our most pivotal characters blew a tire and crashed.
Billy attempted to save his team, and just when it seemed like everything was fine, he learned that Jabari was still on the bus.
When he returned to save Jabari, the bus went over the cliff, leading to Billy's shocking demise.
Big exits have been revealed months in advance in recent years, so props to The CW and the hit drama for keeping the development under wraps.
Diggs, who has been with the show since the beginning, revealed to TV Line that he had a feeling he was ready to move on while filming All American Season 4.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Time,” Season 5, Episode 11 of “All American.”
Taye Diggs is saying goodbye to The CW’s “All American.” The actor has portrayed Billy Baker on the drama since its 2018 debut. During Monday’s episode, Billy tells his team that while the rumors of him leaving them to coach Bau were true, he’s since changed his mind and will remain their coach. On the way home from the Crenshaw combine, the tire on the team’s bus blew out, causing an accident. Billy got out of the bus with the rest of the team — or so he thought. After calling his wife and daughter to tell them he was okay, he realized Jabari (Simeon Daise) was stuck in the bus, which was half hanging off of a cliff. Despite Grace (Karimah Westbrook) and Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) begging, he went back in to try and rescue Jabari.

Taye Diggs has left the All American building.
The actor, who has starred on The CW drama as Billy Baker since its late 2018 launch, was shockingly killed off of the series during the Feb. 13 episode.
“It has been an honor to work with Taye over these last five seasons and to watch him bring such incredible life to the role of Billy Baker,” showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “It has truly been a gift for me and my fellow writers to write a character that was equally flawed and heroic. Billy was all of us and what a joy it was to watch this character grow as he raised his kids and his football players as one big family. On Sept. 30, musician and actor Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi dropped two big projects that shared a single title: Entergalactic. His eighth studio album and a corresponding Netflix animated special — originally conceived as a TV series with producer Kenya Barris, then redeveloped as a 90-minute feature told in chapters — Mescudi’s Entergalactic is an ambitious cross-platform project, blending music and a narrative arc to tell the story of a New York-based artist named Jabari (voiced by Mescudi) who is on the verge of finding creative success. But after a meet-cute with his photographer neighbor Meadow (Jessica Williams), Jabari must decide if he can make room in his life for a romantic relationship.

“I’m always trying to do something new,” says Mescudi, who began the project by writing the music before imagining how a story inspired by his songs would unfold.

Valentine's Day wasn't a special occasion for the gang in Beverly Hills and Crenshaw.
Only the primarily secret couple of Jordan and Layla came out better off on All American Season 5 Episode 5.
And now that JJ is in their business, how long can that last?
This situation all falls on Layla after too many weeks of will they or won't they? She wanted to keep things casual, while Jordan doesn't do casual.
Since he got through his man-whore phase, Jordan falls fast, and he falls hard. Also, he's been on the rebound from breaking up with Simone, so he was more susceptible to wanting a new relationship.
Did Layla learn nothing from the whole Clay experience? She needs to spell out the parameters of a relationship.
Especially to Jordan. He tried to plan a special Valentine's Day event, and she pretty much told him to pump the brakes.
That's why...

Marvel’s first “Black Panther” movie was a cultural and commercial phenomenon, grossing well over a billion dollars worldwide and earning three Academy Awards, including one for the costume designs of Ruth Carter, who’d been previously nominated for her work on Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” and Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad.” For the sequel “Wakanda Forever,” Carter had to retain the satisfactions of the original “Black Panther” without simply repeating herself — all while knowing that the expectations would be stratospheric.
“We wanted to keep Wakanda intact,” she told IndieWire, “but just like any other big superhero film, you enhance it, you upgrade.” Characters like the Dora Milaje, the Wakandan special forces team made up entirely of women, were given new armor to increase their sense of power and menace, while Lupita Nyong’o’s character Nakia received a new submersible suit for an underwater rescue sequence.

In "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," insults aren't the only weapon Winston Duke's tribal leader, M'Baku, wields. There's also his club, which previously came in handy when he was engaging in ritual combat atop a waterfall. M'Baku's furry armor is another key feature of his character design, but both that and his club only get him so far in battle against Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) in "Wakanda Forever."
The first "Black Panther" film begins with a prologue showing how "a meteorite made of vibranium, the strongest substance in the universe" crash-landed in Africa in what would become the Kingdom of Wakanda. The movies do a good job of establishing vibranium, and the desire to protect this natural resource helps drive the plot of "Wakanda Forever." What the movies don't always make clear is the material M'Baku's club and armor are made of: namely, Jabari wood.
This wood is an important facet of Jabari society,...

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever may be an effective, harrowing examination of grief, which depicts a nation and a family mourning the significant loss of King T’Challa — but it is still a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, meaning there is a potentially catastrophic global threat that our heroes (in this case, the royal family of Wakanda, the Dora Milaje, an M.I.T. student named RiRi Williams and CIA agent Everett Ross) must conquer before the nearly three hour run-time is up.

"Black Panther" had a strong supporting cast all around, but by far the breakout character of the movie was Winston Duke's M'Baku, leader of Wakanda's Jabari tribe. Unlike most of Wakanda's people -- who pay tribute to the panther god Bast, follow the leadership of the royal family, and hail the Black Panther as their protector -- the Jabari worship the gorilla god Hanuman, and retreated from the rest of Wakandan society centuries ago to live under their own leadership.
The Jabari have a lot going for them: badass battle cries, furry armor, war paint, great views from their mountaintop locale, and a healthy vegetarian diet. But easily their greatest strength is their charismatic leader, who has been both a foil and an ally to the Black Panther, and is played by an actor who steals every scene he's in.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" introduces quite a few new heroes, including Riri Williams, aka Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) and Namor (Tenoch Huerta). We also meet one of the Dora Milaje, Aneka (Michaela Coel), a little better. Aneka joins with Okoye (Danai Gurira) to become the Midnight Angels, wearing special suits made for them by Shuri (Letitia Wright). Ahead, we're breaking down just who the Midnight Angels are, Aneka's history in the comics, and where we'll see these characters again going forward in the MCU.
Who Is Aneka in the Marvel Comics?
In the comics, Aneka is a member of the Dora Milaje. She kills a Wakandan chieftan because of his abusive behavior toward the women in his village. Despite those mitigating circumstances, Queen Ramonda sentences her to death. Another Dora Milaje, Ayo, who's played by Florence Kasumba in the MCU, can't let it stand and steals Midnight Angels armor to break Aneka out of prison.

Making a “Black Panther” sequel without its Black Panther — following the tragic and untimely death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 — was always going to be a challenge, and it’s a testament to director and co-writer Ryan Coogler that “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is as entertaining and affecting as it is.
At the same time, like so many sequels before it, “Wakanda Forever” doesn’t land with the same power as its predecessor. That can be partially pinned on the issues that plague any second chapter, where the freshness of the first film has been incorporated into popular culture, but there’s more to it: This is a movie that wants to wrap its arms around grief and loss, and to consider the transfer of power in a royal family, while also introducing a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that necessitates origin stories for a major character and his heretofore hidden kingdom.

Spencer and Olivia continued to search for some way to cope with their breakup.

Olivia has blinders on instead, targeting the coach of Gau, Spencer and Jordan's team.
So who is the more productive member of society?
That used to be social warrior Olivia. But now, with so many of society's problems that she could be writing about, she had to start an investigation that threatened to bring down the program of her ex and her brother.
This isn't to say that Garrett doesn't deserve to be exposed. Of course, he does for how he uses and disposes of his players simply to raise the profile of himself and his program.

Dot Da Genius spent many years in the early 2000s grinding it out in New York City, living with and producing music for his close friend Scott Mescudi, better known as his hip-hop alias Kid Cudi. He was behind the boards on “Day ‘n’ Nite,” which launched Cudi into the mainstream in 2008 with his debut mixtape “A Kid Named Cudi.”
Dot and the 38-year-old rapper have since maintained a long creative partnership, still trusting one another to this day to explore new artistic mediums together. Such is true with Netflix’s “Entergalactic,” Mescudi’s adult animated special that blends tracks from his 10th studio album of the same name into a visual story about the intrinsic power of finding love.

When "Black Panther" came out, it was a shock to the system of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is a movie that introduced audiences to a lived-in world with complex and detailed societal structures and rules, a rich culture with exquisite production designs, and a fantastic cast you could follow for hours and hours at a time, with some of the best and most complex villains in the entire MCU.

In a recent interview with Tudum, Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi explained his new special, “Entergalactic,” is a singular work: an animated event that shares its name with an album that he is releasing alongside the Netflix title. “Entergalactic” is also a word with a long history for the hip-hop artist and actor, who invented the term, which manages to be both familiar and cryptically inviting. “The title came from my first album, the song that I did called ‘Enter Galactic,’” Mescudi told Tudum. “The song was about me meeting this girl for the first time, and us doing shrooms and making love.”
Mescudi teamed up with “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris for the new animated project that blends notes of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “Insecure” with tracks from the musician’s new record, resulting in a singular look at the story of two young, ambitious artists falling in love. The...

Although they’ve both embraced the medium tenfold, “Entergalactic” creators Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Kenya Barris did not originally envision their TV event being animated. “We got convinced by some Netflix execs, Mike Moon, Elizabeth Porter, maybe this is something for animation,” Barris told IndieWire over Zoom. “And we started talking about how we both loved ‘Heavy Metal,’ we loved ‘Bambi’ and ‘Moana,’ and those things live forever. And so when you sometimes bring those together, it could be something amazing.”

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi’s “Entergalactic,” the rapper’s sprawling Netflix special that accompanies his eighth studio album of the same name, is proof that the multihyphenate can “do what he wants.”
The otherworldly animated Netflix special is an immersion into a New York City that drips with milky way hues, tactile textures, wavy synths and the adrenaline rush that comes with experiencing ardent young love. A passion project and labor of love from the artist, who invited many of his real-life friends to lend their voices to the show, “Entergalactic” took several years to make, initially conceptualized as a season-long series with six to eight installments and only one animated episode.
“For a while, I had been sitting on this idea of wanting to do an anthology [where] each season would have a certain theme,” Mescudi told TheWrap. “This first season that I was developing in my mind, the theme was love.

But when Fletcher Moules was hired to direct “Entergalactic,” there was only a handful of song demos and a three-page outline for a modern love story that would accompany a new album by Kid Cudi. Still, there was enough there to make the creative juices flow. “I joined in the summer of 2019 and spent the back half of the first year just painting New York City,” Moules told IndieWire. “As I heard the songs and read the story that the writers’ room was finishing up, I was able to spend the time just really designing the city the way we wanted the characters to see it.”

“Entergalactic” is far from the first visual album to debut on Netflix in recent years. In 2019 alone,...

From the beginning, Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi has approached his career as an artist who would sooner toil in obscurity than be renowned for just one thing. Just two years after dropping “A Kid Named Cudi,” the mixtape that launched him into the spotlight, he was cast in “How to Make It in America,” a short-lived HBO-originals deep cut. In the decade since that show ended in 2011, he’s earned a reputation for bouncing willy-nilly between genres, mediums, and disciplines, and the choices that once seemed fickle now seem confidently eclectic.
Never has Mescudi looked more like a polymath than with the debut of “Entergalactic,” an animated Netflix special timed to the release of his new studio album (also dropping on Sept. 30), which bears the same title. “Entergalactic” was initially announced in 2019 as a series to be created by Mescudi and Kenya Barris, but has since been whittled down to...

"Scott did me an amazing favor for my daughter that was just so sweet and who Scott is."

When Scott Mescudi, better known as musician Kid Cudi to most of the world, released his debut studio record “Man on the Moon: The End of Day” in 2009, the latter half of the album included a groovy love anthem called “Enter Galactic (Love Connection Part I).”
And though a sequel to the song never came out, Mescudi figured out an innovative way to dive back into the track’s affection-drenched world 13 years later. “Entergalactic” is both a new animated Netflix program — the streamer is calling it an “event” — as well as the title of his 10th studio album. They’re both being released on Sept. 30.
“It’s exciting, like, never in my wildest dreams did I feel like I would revisit that song in any type of way,” Mescudi tells Variety over Zoom alongside co-star Jessica Williams. “It was something that I recorded years ago — sort of as a simple...

Things are going pretty great for Jabari. He's recently moved into a huge apartment in Manhattan -- the kind of place he would have dreamed up as wildly unrealistic as a kid. He's a gifted artist, and his graffiti creation of Mr. Rager has taken the city by storm, so much so that a comic book company has brought Jabari on board to turn his creation into their next big event. His newfound success is exciting, but Jabari is grounded in reality and isn't the kind of guy to spend his paycheck as soon as he's got it. He's deeply modest, which makes him feel likable, the kind of guy that you'd want to pick their brain over a delicious meal.
It's smooth sailing for Jabari, but he can't shake the feeling that something is missing, a nagging loneliness that keeps him up at night in his vast new space.

Earlier this year, Kid Cudi’s debut mixtape A Kid Named Cudi became available on streaming platforms—just a few days shy of its 14th anniversary. “I think it was a great reminder for people. It’s a celebration for what me, Plain Pat, Emile, and Dot Da Genius created early on,” Cudi said over the phone in an interview with Rolling Stone this week. “We set out to do something important. We wanted to change the game. We wanted to change how people approach making music. And we did that.
