Yesterday we covered our teams picks for DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Today we venture out into the vast world of independent comics, which pretty much covers the rest of the comic book industry. What makes this interesting is that a lot of these independent books are creator’s “passion projects” just take a moment and look at all the amazing books that Image as well as Aftershock comics are putting out month to month. Comic books like this usually are amazing due to the fact that you can see how much the creative teams enjoy working on the book. Here are some of our favorites for 2016:

Replica #1
Writer: Paul Jenkins
Artist: Andy Clarke
Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo
Publisher: Aftershock Comics
Price: $4
There’s no shortage of sci fi comics out there right now, all jostling for attention with their own unique take on classic concepts; parallel universes, time travel, clones, space travel, etc. There’s new debuts every month and it’s nearly impossible to keep up. A brand new publisher, Afteshock, looks to make their mark with the help of Paul Jenkins, who won an Eisner for his breakthrough 1999 Inhumans mini-series that brought that particularly niche class of superheroes into the spotlight. The artist, Andy Clarke, cut his teeth in the pages of 2000 Ad, which means you know he’s a badass. But greater stars have tried to make their home in the sci-fi comic world but found themselves overlooked. With a title as embarrassingly bland as Replica, can the series hope to do otherwise?...

Sneak Peek Marvel Comics' "Age Of Apocalypse" #1, and #2, available July 2015, written by Fabian Nicieza and illustrated by Gerardo Sandoval, with variant covers by Andy Clarke and Skottie Young:

'En Sabah Nur', the 'Apocalypse', rules his 'Battleworld' kingdom without mercy, but the 'X-Men' of 'Magneto' plan to end his reign. Success means finding one very special mutant named 'Cypher' and unleashing a weapon that will kill Apocalypse -- and possibly all mutants, too..."
"...in 'Age Of Apocalypse #2, the hunt for Cypher brings Magneto's X-Men into confrontation with 'Cyclops' and the 'Havok Elite Mutant Force'. All eyes are on the Dark Knight in 2014 with the 75th Anniversary of Batman upon us. One way DC Comics is celebrating the milestone is through the release of Batman - Detective Comics Volume 4: The Wrath. Made up of issues 19 through 24 and Annual 2 of the monthly series, the book keeps the super hero investigating different crimes the way his creator Bob Kane originally envisioned him to.
Batman has his hands full as the super villains of Gotham City continue their reigns of terror. The Caped Crusader crosses paths with the enigmatic 900 and must also foil the devious plans of both Emperor Penguin and a murderous vigilante calling himself The Wrath. While Batman is fighting his archenemies, scientist Kurt Langstrom is battling his own personal demons as it begins to look like his alter ego Man-Bat is committing horrific murders nightly.

Detective Comics Volume 3: Emperor Penguin is a dual-edged sword of energy and suspense served up by DC Comics. Not only do we get appearances from Oswald Cobblepot, but ones from Poison Ivy, Joker, Clayface, and new villains like the Merrymaker and the title character. I know there've been many complaints about the "New 52," but count me as impressed.
Made up of issues #13 through #18, Detective Comics Volume 3: Emperor Penguin has the Dark Knight fighting to keep his head above water as new villains pop up in Gotham City looking to make their marks. Oswald Cobblepot is called back to Arkham Asylum by the Joker, leaving his assistant in charge of things until he can get back. His aide is more than willing to step up and take over completely, naming himself Emperor Penguin and claiming Cobblepot's businesses as his own.
If things aren't bad enough already, a masked man...

Not content with simply providing Batman with a new villainous group, DC Comics commissioned Scott Snyder to create an evil society calling themselves the Court of Owls, which has run Gotham City since before the 1900s. Snyder came up with a cartel of high society malefactors so rich in history and detailed that it's taken literally every Bat-Family book in the belfry to bring the story to a close. Those weren't even enough to get the whole story told. A new series entitled Talon was birthed out of the event dubbed "The Night of the Owls."
Talon Volume 1: Scourge of the Owls collects issues #0 through #7 of the monthly title. It revolves around a young performer with Haly's Circus named Calvin Rose. Little did he suspect he was being secretly raised to be a killer known as a Talon for the Court of Owls. Rose flees from his evil destiny,...

Better late than never…
4th September
I bought lots of comics this week because there were lots of comics that I thought looked interesting. After being pleasantly surprised by the first book in the new Infinity (Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opeña, Dustin Weaver, Marvel Comics) series, I was looking forward to the second issue. However, where the first issue was reasonably accessible and not a total mash of incomprehensible gibberish to any non-hardcore Marvel fans, the second has edged considerably towards this description. There’s a big space fight between The Avengers and The Builders and Thanos’s agents, the The Cull Obsidian (meaning ‘The Midnight Slaughter’, for those unfamiliar with synonyms) lay down a challenge to The Inhumans. There’s a twist at the end.
With so many factions, it’s hard to either a) understand what they all wish to achieve and b) know why this matters, if indeed it does.

Joker #1 (Batman 23.1)
Written by Andy Kubert
Art by Andy Clarke
Colored by Blond.
Cover by Jason Fabok and Nathan Fairbairn
Published by DC Comics
Joker #1 is part of DC’s New 52. This comic is another great idea from DC focusing stories on some of the most intriguing villains in comics history. And when you think of psychos the first name in crazy is and always will be the Joker. Whether it be Jack Nicholson in that creepy beret, Heath Ledger as a clown faced nurse, or his amazing one-sided crowbar fight with the soon to be dead Robin, the Joker never ceases to deliver more crazy than that lady who screams at road signs.
Joker #1 gives one of those brief glimpses into the past of the man called Joker. It shows flashbacks of a young Joker being raised by his evil aunt Eunice. She’s not very nice to him.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: a clown, a gorilla and an evil aunt walk into a comic…
The end of Scott Snyder’s Death of the Family earlier this year left the question of whether Joker was alive or dead (as if!) open ended, though we’ve not seen him since. Readers of Forever Evil #1 will notice Joker’s conspicuous absence from that series, but this is Villains’ Month so DC pretty much had to do a Joker comic because he is the best, most famous villain they have. So is this a continuation of Death of the Family? Do we find out what Joker’s up to during Forever Evil? No and no. This is a one-shot that has nothing to do with either storyline and takes place before Joker has his face removed in the New 52. Instead Joker #1 (or Batman #23.1) focuses on giving us the origin of Jackanapes,...

In the latest, What's New in The New 52, Batman #23.1: Joker gets previewed which focuses on a prefacial surgery Joker taking Jackanapes under his tutelage to show him the ways of being evil. Said DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras, "Batman #23.1: Joker takes place many years ago – back when The Joker’s face was still intact. In fact, this unique one-shot marks one of the earliest appearances we’ve seen of this notorious villain so far in the New 52. While at a zoo, the Joker will have a flashback to a childhood memory that will trigger his need to take Jackanapes under his wing. It is here that Joker will take on a new, twisted role: that of a mentor. But why is he training Jackanapes to be a villain? What use will he have for him?" Above, you can see preview art for the issue from Andy Clarke.

The Joker is a character who's real origins have usually remained a mystery in the DC universe, with Alan Moore's take from The Killing Joke generally regarded as canon by most -- if a back-story must be assigned at all. But that may all be about to change this Sepetember, as a one-shot Joker story from Andy Kubert which takes place before the events of the #1 New 52 issues may set up a brand new origin for the character. "During Villains Month, witness an untold tale of The Joker that takes place before any of the #1 issues in DC Comics-The New 52. There can never be enough Batman books featuring Ra's Al Ghul and the League of Assassins. Countless story arcs utilize the notorious villain either as a central character or the mysterious antagonist who pulls the strings behind the scenes. Although the Dark Knight always finds a way to foil Al Ghul's plans for the moment, the arch villain continues to return and cause more trouble.
Batman Incorporated Volume 1: Demon Star is proof there are still plenty of tales to tell centering on the Al Ghul family. The book consists of issues #0 through 6 of the popular monthly series. Readers could easily find themselves so mesmerized by the engaging story that they read this in one sitting.
Ra's Al Ghul's daughter, Talia, puts a hit out on her son as revenge against Batman. She's also created an army of brainwashed followers and skilled assassins called Leviathan with the goal of destroying Gotham City.

Batman and Robin Volume 2: Pearl gives us more of the complex dynamics of the Bat-Family. At times, it begins to feel like a prime time soap opera based around the Dark Knight and his dysfunctional bunch. I don't mean that in a negative manner, either. It adds an emotional level that strengthens the book and elevates it above your simple action / adventure fare.
The spotlight in Batman and Robin Volume 2: Pearl is on Damian Wayne and his complicated and competitive relationships with his father and the past Boy Wonders. It collects issues #0 and 9 through 14 of the monthly title. The book is split into four different storylines which are equally engaging.
"Someday Never Comes" shows us the training of Damian Wayne by his mother Talia and the members of the League of Assassins. The young boy is put through the harshest trials and tribulations to make him stronger and undefeatable both mentally and physically.

One of the main attractions at this year’s Comicpalooza in Houston—in addition to appearances by the likes of Patrick Stewart, Michelle Rodriguez and Danny Trejo—was the three-day Dollar Baby Film Festival organized by Shawn S. Lealos.
What’s a “Dollar Baby?” It’s a short film based on a Stephen King story or novella. For decades, King has allowed people to acquire limited film rights to an available story for one dollar. The resulting movies cannot be released on the internet or shown at for-profit venues, which limits their availability to festivals like this one. The filmmakers can include their movies on clip reels as calling cards. King also gets a copy of the finished product. The quality of these adaptations is all over the map, but the increased availability of affordable digital cameras and video editing software means that the community is growing by leaps and bounds.
