“On the latest F This Movie!, host Patrick Bromley is joined by filmmaker Joe Maddrey to discuss the latest big-screen adaption of Stephen King’s It. The It 1990 miniseries is touched on as the two discuss the necessity of setting the film in 1989 rather than the late ’50s, an appeal to a generation that grew up with…

The horror genre had quite the year in 1986. Jason Voorhees climbed out of his coffin, scientist Seth Brundle tinkered with teleportation, two Tobe Hooper films were released in theaters, and Stephen King's directorial debut burned rubber on the big screen. In our new, free issue of Deadly Magazine, we revisit some of the genre's most memorable movies from that magical mid-’80s year with the people that helped make them. Welcome to the 30-year reunion for the Class of 1986.
Within the pages of this Deadly Magazine issue, you'll find retrospectives and interviews that shine spotlights on some of the most celebrated, and in some cases, underrated, films from 1986.
Scott Weinberg's interview with Barbara Crampton offers an intriguing look at the making of Stuart Gordon's other H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, From Beyond. Scott Drebit enrolls at Slaughter High to give his grade on the school-set slasher. Joseph Maddrey sits...

[Editor's Note: In this special guest post, Joseph Maddrey, author of Beyond Fear, reflects on Deadly Friend as part of our Wes Craven tribute week.]
"For horror fans, Deadly Friend is a film that seems to have everything going for it. It’s a modern-day reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein, directed by A Nightmare on Elm Street creator Wes Craven, written by Bruce Joel Rubin (the future Oscar-winner behind Ghost and Jacob’s Ladder), and starring Kristy Swanson (the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer). But while the film has its admirers, it was a critical and commercial failure in 1986, quickly disowned by its creators and leaving viewers to wonder what went wrong....
...Deadly Friend began its life as a popular novel by Diana Henstell, simply called Friend. The story revolves around an emotionally disturbed 13-year-old boy named Paul “Piggy” Conway. Piggy is cursed with a lack of social grace, troubled over his parents’ recent divorce, and haunted by daydreams and nightmares about a violent “accident” that resulted in the fiery death of a classmate.

Lance Henriksen: A Survivor’s Tale
A seminal event happened to actor Lance Henriksen in his late teens that serves as the perfect metaphor for his life: Henriksen was working at a rural New Mexico gas station, and was taken in by the couple who owned it. They had a teenage daughter a couple years his junior. One day, figuring Lance and his daughter were getting a bit too chummy; the man drove Henriksen out to the middle of the desert. “All winter long, the frost has been pushing up these beautiful amethyst stones,” the man explained. “I’ll drop you off and you can collect them, then come back and sell them for a lot of money.” Henriksen stayed half the night, and then started to succumb to the desert’s freezing temperatures. “I dug a hole and buried myself up to my chest, with a fire in front of me.

I don’t often get time to read a lot of books these days, but I knew that Joseph Maddrey had a couple of genre-related titles coming out and I needed to make the time. A few years ago, Maddrey teamed up with iconic actor Lance Henriksen for the wonderfully engaging Not Bad for a Human, and Maddrey’s latest literary efforts- Beyond Fear and A Strange Idea of Entertainment-are both equally informative and compelling reads for any horror fan.
Beyond Fear: Reflections on Stephen King, Wes Craven and George Romero’s Living Dead focuses on Maddrey’s analysis and reflections on three of our genre’s most influential storytellers and how their visions uniquely shaped the landscape of horror entertainment over the last several decades. Considering we live in a world where we seem to have a documentary about practically every possible subject out there now, there’s actually...

At a recent signing at Dark Delicacies, I was able to sit down with Lance Henriksen and speak for a few moments. I thought we would be talking about his recent western/supernatural graphic novel project with Joe Maddrey entitled To Hell You Ride, but, as you'll soon encounter like I did in this multi-part interview, the conversation soon took on a life of its own. Fearnet: I hear that you and Joe Maddrey have been working on the graphic novel To Hell You Ride for a couple of years. Henriksen: Yeah. Tom Mandrake lives in New Jersey and Joe and I live out here [in California]. What started all of this is that I wrote a script 20-25 years ago called Telluride. A Western? It was this story. I was down at Comic-Con and Mike Richardson [of Dark Horse Comics] shook my hand and said, "Do you want to do a comic? I just shook your hand,...

To Hell opened up with character Two Dogs, aka Seven George, a Native American man who has spent his whole life running away from himself. Liquored on booze and rebellion, the world finds him wandering around a dead-end town in Colorado. Unbeknownst to him, he is the soon-to-be pinnacle for a spiritual revolution, a body for the voices of his ancestors intent on cleansing the mountain. After getting tossed into a jail during a night of drinking, Two Dogs has a vision of his ancestors past and wakes up clutching an arrow, a gift to their son.
Issue two continues by exploring Two Dogs’ past and his ties between the living and the dead. When a corporation begins to force the winter snows to cash on the ski craze, the spirits come alive and wreak havoc on the mountain led by their forgotten child.

Lance Henriksen is a master storyteller. In the veteran actor's films, Henriksen goes to great lengths in order to truly live his characters. He imbues each one with details that most audiences aren't cognizant of, but they are important parts of a picture he paints for his dramatic narrative.
Henriksen's leap to comic books doesn't seem that unusual, then — a medium where visuals and words are equally important symbols, joining forces to tell a story. There's another partnership at work with Henriksen's comic debut, To Hell You Ride. The Aliens actor has re-teamed with his Not Bad for a Human biography co-writer, Joseph Maddrey, and comic artist, Tom Mandrake, to create a tale that spans decades, mountains, and ghostly messengers from the past.
The story opens in the blustery Colorado mountains, 1880. Miners have struck gold, but their axes are covered in the blood of the Native Americans who populate the land.

Lance Henriksen has a new project to unveil, and it's not what you might think. We spoke with him not about a new film or television show; he's now a comic book writer and is proud to announce his upcoming title To Hell You Ride. Co-writer Joseph Maddrey also joined our chat.
Henriksen and Maddrey collaborated previously and have reconnected for the supernatural comic book To Hell You Ride. "Joe Maddrey and I wrote a book together, my biography, and in it we got comic book artists to do drawings of some of my movies, whatever movie they wanted to do," Henriksen said. "Suddenly we were plugged into the comic book world with (Bill) Sienkiewicz and (Mike) Mignola and Tim Bradstreet and Eric Powell and Tim Mandrake. All these guys are the best in the business and they wanted to do the illustrations for the autobiography, and we didn't want...

If you're a regular reader of Dread Central, then we don't have to tell you that actor Lance Henriksen is a true Hollywood (and horror) icon with well over 150 films to his name, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Terminator, Aliens, Near Dark, Damien: Omen II, Pumpkinhead, Scream 3 and dozens more genre films.
He also portrayed Frank Black in the cult classic "Millennium" television series (which garnered the prolific actor several award nominations) and has lent his voice to countless animated movies and video games as well.
Now Henriksen is enjoying a new direction in his illustrious career- that of a writer. "It was an outrageous process to do it," admits veteran actor Lance Henriksen of "Not Bad for a Human," a memoir penned with Joseph Maddrey. The book has been in the works for more than a year and a half, and the subsequent publicity tour has already taken Henriksen to Australia and Germany, with numerous domestic and other international locales on the list. Henriksen has a wide fan base (which he fondly refers to as his "tribe"), thanks to roles such as the artificial life form Bishop in "Aliens" and three seasons as the lead on the sci-fi series "Millennium." "Initially I thought, 'What have I got to tell? What is my contribution going to be to this thing?' " Henriksen confides. After a career that has lasted nearly 40 years, it is hardly surprising that Henriksen had plenty to contribute to the book that chronicles his adventures on and off screen,...

Writer: Joseph Maddrey.
Narrrator: Lance Henriksen.
Nightmares in Red, White and Blue will be released on DVD September 28th of this year and recently Gravitas Ventures has made this film available on VOD (formats below). This documentary on horror filmmaking highlights the icons in the genre like Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2), John Carpenter (Halloween), Larry Cohen (Maniac Cop), George A. This documentary on horror filmmaking highlights the icons in the genre like Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2), John Carpenter (Halloween), Larry Cohen (Maniac Cop), George A. Romero (Land of the Dead) and many more. As well, horror films in American media are covered over the span of a hundred years, with insight from each decade's political influences. The film is enjoyable for director Andrew Monument's introduction of psychological concepts like in-group/out-groups, the universality of fear, and the influence of imagination in the success of horror filmmaking.
The film is set up in an interview fashion with directors offering their personal takes on specific films e.g. Psycho, The Exorcist.

Joseph Maddrey’s 2004 book Nightmares In Red, White And Blue: The Evolution Of The American Horror Film has come to life as a documentary, directed by the author himself. Featuring interviews with horror legends such as John Carpenter, George Romero, Larry Cohen, Joe Dante and many others, as well as Fango editor emeritus Tony Timpone, the film (currently available across North America through Warner Bros. Digital Distribution; DVD follows September 28 from Lorber Films) will serve as a companion to Maddrey’s written look at domestic horror and its progression in relation to the changing social and political climates and phases of the United States.

Tracing a hundred some years of American horror cinema is no small feat, but Andrew Monument's new documentary Nightmares in Red, White and Blue attempts to do just that - albeit, by cutting some corners and really only skimming the surface of a few pretty important moments in the evolution of the genre.
I don't want to fault the film for leaving me wanting more, but ultimately this movie should have been four hours, or made into a short series of installments. There's certainly enough material here to warrant it and a ravenous audience out there ready to indulge. Ken Burns' Baseball? Blech. Ken Burns' Horror film? Now we're talkin'.
Nightmares brings the usual suspects together (read: Romero, Dante, Carpenter, Cohen, Corman et all) to talk - not just movies...

The first-ever Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors has officially taken over the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, becoming The Place you want to spend your Halloween! Its 1:31am Vegas time as I type this and the party is continuing downstairs as Halloween has officially arrived in the city of Sin.
Opening night was a blast here, packed with film screenings, celebrity guests (including some unannounced surprises), horror, freaks, and rock. And to top it off, we're broadcasting the demonic debauchery Live!
Check out this clip from last night's Live webcast featuring John Kassir doing a little bit of The Crypt Keeper!
As the final screening of the night comes to a close with Black Devil Doll wrapping up in the Brenden Theatres, we're already prepping for the show floor to re-open at 10am. Tickets will be available at the door for only $20 beginning at 8:30am, and here's what horrors lie in-store for Halloween.

So I do my best to get to bed early the night before my first full day at Spain’s Sitges film festival (see first entry here), but after only five hours, I’m wide awake and unable to sleep another wink. Nonetheless, I will do my darnedest to persevere through at least three movies today.
First film on my line-up is the premiere of director Andrew Monument’s documentary Nightmares In Red, White & Blue: The Evolution Of The American Horror Film, which is screening at one of the festival’s secondary venues, the Prado, located in town. With none of the filmmakers on hand, including writer Joseph Maddrey, whose book served as the basis of the film, I’ve been asked to moderate the screening, as I am one of the interviewees in the production. Although it is 10 a.m. and no one in Sitges seems to hit the sack until 7 a.

I could very much be preaching to the choir here, but I need to have this talk, because more often than not, instances like this really get under my skin. For a long time now, I’ve tried to not let it get to me. People seem to dismiss anything remotely intelligent with ties to the horror genre as being something other than horror. They say it “transcends,” “doesn’t qualify as such” or “is really a very harsh drama.” This is killing me. Normally, I’ll just chalk it up to the fact that they don’t understand, they don’t get it and they refuse to see the art and intellect. But this time really caught me off guard.
