- After completing a nursing program in New Orleans, she joined the Army Nurse Corps, treating WWII combat veterans in Texas. She later attended Columbia University on the GI Bill, receiving a bachelor's and master's degree. She earned a PhD in psychology, speech and special education at Ohio University when she was 60.
- In 1965, she and Bernard Rimland founded what is now the Autism Society of America.
