A TV documentary titled Barbie Uncovered and an adaptation of Homer’s classic The Odyssey starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche are among the titles to receive cash during the latest round of U.K. Global Screen Fund awards.
Financed through the UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms), the latest round handed out over £1.2 million in cash awards through the fund’s International Co-production strand, supporting UK producers to work as partners on international co-productions. To date, the strand has now awarded over £5 million to 33 co-productions.
This latest round of awards sees the UK co-producing with 12 territories and will be the first time the fund has supported collaborations with India and Finland. The funding will also support partnerships with Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, France, Italy, Greece, Germany, Ireland, Canada, and New Zealand.

Sally Aitken a two-time Emmy nominated writer and director (“Playing with Sharks”) and producer and media executive Aline Jacques (“Lindy Chamberlain: The True Story”) have launched Sam Content.
The Sydney-based independent production company will develop and produce all genres of unscripted and scripted projects for local platforms and the international marketplace.
They open their doors with four film and TV shows in production with Australian broadcasters and screen agencies.
They include an untitled Wiggles project in partnership with Augusto Entertainment’s Cass Avery and Daniel Story, and with funding from federal screen agency Screen Australia. The New Zealand Film Commission (Nzfc) will be one of eight organisations to present a curated selection of docs-in-progress as part of Cannes Docs.
Running June 22 – 26 as part of the now virtual Marché du Film, the in progress showcase is designed for decision makers such as festival programmers and sales agents looking for new titles.
The films will be presented by a video pitch and 10-minute sequence of the rough cut.
The four New Zealand documentaries and filmmakers are:
The Girl on The Bridge – director Leanne Pooley, producers Cass Avery and Alex Reed. The story of a young woman with the weight of a generation on her shoulders. Having survived her own suicidal struggles Jazz Thornton is a mental health activist, fighting to change how society and the system are dealing with young people like her. This is a film about hope. It is a film about redemption.
