Like clockwork, another year has come and gone. The events of these past 12 months were anything but predictable, but we tried anyway — and we did Ok!
It’s time for IndieWire’s business team to dust off our crystal balls, put on our writing glasses, and go for broke in 2024. Below are our nine industry predictions for the new year, in varying degrees of boldness. Feel free to tell us where we’re wrong!
Bundle Up!
We’ll see unprecedented streaming consolidation in 2024 — the kind that does not require regulatory approval. Next year will instead be the year of the streaming bundle.
This is, admittedly, a bit of a layup of a prediction considering Verizon already planted its flag earlier this month with a $10 Netflix and Max bundle. Apple TV+ and Paramount+ reportedly flirted with a similar idea, though they ultimately didn’t consummate.
What comes next? More pairs of twos and threes,...

Before “One Piece,” there was a whole different kind of Netflix pirate.
In May, Netflix brought its “paid sharing” initiative, the thing we all call its password-sharing crackdown, to the U.S. Members can no longer share their account with family or friends outside of their household — not for free at least.
What followed were extra members (the add-ons are literally called Extra Members), brand new subscribers, and additional subscription revenue. What following that was other streaming services jumping on the bandwagon. First, was Disney+, and for good reason.
A recent survey of 3,333 users of streaming guide JustWatch found Disney+ to be the most shared streaming service in the U.S. — almost twice as much as Amazon Prime Video.
See below:
In June, IndieWire conducted a survey of its own, asking several experts to name the streamers most likely to follow in Netflix’s footsteps; Disney+ and Max were the runaway frontrunners.

Late in the eighth season of “Friends,” Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) comes storming into her old apartment, upset and concerned. Joey (Matt LeBlanc) has just confessed he’s in love with her, she’s told him she doesn’t feel the same way, and now the two are stuck in an awkward cycle of avoidance. Chandler (Matthew Perry), being the only one there, tries to comfort her, but his broad assurances aren’t convincing, and when challenged, all he can muster is a light joke. “I’m not great at the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”
That line stuck with a lot of people who watched “Friends,” and thus, it stuck with a lot of people. For one, it’s extremely relatable — not knowing what to say when a friend is hurting — but the moment also seemed to define Chandler as a character, and, to some extent,...

Note: This story has spoilers for Season 3, Episode 10, of “Only Murders in the Building.”
The Season 3 finale of “Only Murders in the Building” saw the Hulu comedy’s central trio of Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) solve the murder of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), a Hollywood action star whose Broadway debut was cut short by his untimely death.
After learning in Episode 9 that Donna DeMeo (Linda Emond) poisoned Glenroy with a Schmackary’s cookie, the Season 3 finale revealed that her son Cliff (Wesley Taylore) was the one who finished Glenroy off by pushing him down the elevator shaft to protect his mother.
Executive producer John Hoffman spoke with TheWrap about the “theatrically grand” finale, and what’s to come in Season 4 following the murder of Charles’ stunt double Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch).

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, Episode 10, “Opening Night.”]
If you’ll allow a dreadful detective a brief moment to savor his sagacity: I absolutely called the cookie thing.
Yes, technically, the poisoned Schmackary’s pastry was part of the penultimate episode’s big reveal — when the murder board’s accusatory tacks jumped from Loretta (Meryl Streep) to Donna (Linda Emond) — but it also bears weight for the finale’s last twist and helps explain how well said twist lands with viewers.
Back when we first saw the recording of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) talking to an offscreen someone (or something), his chosen words sounded a little too particular. “I want you so fucking bad,” he says, “but we both know you’ll ruin my career.” Based only on his few choice scenes in the premiere, what does Ben want? Cookies. What can’t he have? Also, cookies. (He’s...

After pictures of Selena Gomez in a wedding dress went viral on social media in March, “Only Murders in the Building” fans started speculating how it could fit into the Hulu comedy’s plot for Season 3.

In “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, Meryl Streep plays Loretta Durkin, a struggling actress who is cast in Oliver Putnam’s (Martin Short) new musical “Death Rattle Dazzle.”
And while the season has been slowly pulling back the layers of Loretta, production designer Patrick Howe and showrunner John Hoffman revealed to TheWrap that there was more information about her character that was ultimately left on the cutting room floor.
“My original information that I had to go on for designing a small modest studio apartment is that she lived there for 40 years, she was a gift wrapper at Macy’s, very modest means, always trying to get acting jobs and never landing anything more than a small, off, off, off Broadway part,” Howe told TheWrap. “And so we filmed all this footage of her wrapping gifts and at the Macy’s gift wrap department but then decided to just...

If you were paying close attention to the second and third episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, you may have noticed a few Easter eggs paying homage to its high-profile murder victim Paul Rudd.
Production designer Patrick Howe spoke with TheWrap about the fun but challenging task of decorating Ben Glenroy’s (Rudd) lavish penthouse apartment at the Arconia, as well as his stalker’s apartment in Episode 2, with objects celebrating both Glenroy’s and Rudd’s storied career in Hollywood.
“99% of the credit goes to decorator Rich Murray… He really did come up with this long laundry list of Easter egg opportunities that were attributed to Paul’s career up to this point,” Howe said. “The directives we had from the script was that he was going to move into the penthouse apartment, it was going to be sublet from Amy Schumer which would be said in dialogue.

Subtle details in costume design, hairstyling and even production design showed the growth and progression of Selena Gomez’s Mabel in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Season 2 begins where the first left off — Mabel is the prime suspect after being found by the side of the dead body of Bunny, who lives in the same building as Mabel, Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin).
When audiences were first introduced to Mabel in Season 1, she’s someone who is trying to protect herself. Costume designer Dana Covarrubias says, “I put her in chunky- soled boots and big puffy coats and jackets that create this sense of a protective armor around her.”
As the season progresses and she begins to connect with Oliver and Charles, she softens up. Solving a murder and being implicated in a murder brings the podcasting trio closer together.

“Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 contains a cast of heavy hitters joining the staple trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Each addition drives this season’s murder mystery, particularly Paul Rudd’s Ben Glenroy, whose second and certain death earns him consideration on the murder podcast.
Also entering the puzzle this season is Meryl Streep as aspiring actress Loretta Durkin, who auditions and gets cast in the role of The Nanny by Oliver himself in his new play. All her life she has been waiting to hear the words he says to her after she finishes her monologue. Ben Glenroy brings some interesting people along with him — mainly his manager and adopted brother Dickey (Jeremy Shamos) and his cameraman Tobert (Jesse Williams). The end of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2 featured a flash forward to a year after the series’ true-crime podcasting trio — Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) — solved the murder of their curmudgeon of a neighbor Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell). Set on opening night of Oliver’s latest Broadway play, with Charles and Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) as the show’s feuding stars, the epilogue served as the series’ way of saying, “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” Or, more specifically, as Mabel herself said to close out the episode and season: “You’ve got to be f–g kidding me.” Because, naturally Ben ended up dying right there on the Broadway stage, most definitely not from natural causes.

Fall TV is about to get pinched. The ongoing SAG and WGA strikes have, as intended, disrupted an industry in need of disruption. Some series are being delayed. Others have been pushed off the calendar entirely. Even with what we will see in the coming months, the AMPTP’s greed is forcing a workforce that loves a hot mic to keep quiet about the shows they make possible. While it’s nothing compared to the highway robbery Hollywood executives are trying to get away with when it comes to not paying talent, audiences are still about to lose out on something special.
All this is to say: Curse the studios for making the “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 press tour impossible — aka killing a parade of interviews where everyone gets to share fresh, funny, and insightful stories about Meryl Fucking Streep.
Thankfully, what’s onscreen stands just fine on its own.

The story centers on Reagan and his family, who are involved in law enforcement. But as tough as the characters themselves are, the cast ultimately had to make a request for the show’s frequent family dinner scenes.

Stephen King has a strange history when it comes to his work making its way to any video format. While some films are widely regarded as classics of the horror genre, others are downright goofy. The strangest part of this is that whether any film is generally considered good or bad, or if the television efforts win fans or fizzle out, none of them seem to completely deliver on some “King-ness” that is crucial to the popularity of his books. Amid the creepy lighting and odd use of cameras and angles, the paranormal jumps and chilly atmosphere that leaks out of the screen, Castle Rock grabs you most with its least noteworthy efforts. The story may be about rather bizarre events, and the fact that the devil may be in play isn’t even necessarily the creepiest among them, but...

"Veep" stars Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus, along with Tony Hale, Anna Chlumsky, Reid Scott, Matt Walsh, Timothy Simons, Sufe Bradshaw, Kevin Dunn, Gary Cole, and Sam Richardson. The dramatic reality TV event we've been waiting for will soon arrive: the sixth season of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" premieres on Bravo this Sunday, July 13. It appears to be quite the doozy -- full of everything from legal issues to identical twins to intense family cat fights and gossip. Plus, the return of original housewife, Dina Manzo.
Season 5 was all sorts of crazy, so if you're not caught up on the show you should probably do so now. But first we'll provide a little help outlining the highlights of the season for you. Through gifs, of course!
-One thing that did not let up last season: The tension insane fighting between the Giudices and the Gorgas. Teresa and her brother Joe continued to butt heads. Even Caroline Manzo tried to get involve in their troubled relationship. And Melissa was so fed up with the drama that she...

Fans of Rescue Me, and/or Denis Leary, have something to be happy about as FX orders a new series, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, from the comedian.
This one is quite a different effort from the surprisingly dramatic Rescue Me, but looks as though it is going to mix a lot of elements. Leary is likely just the guy who can deliver an aging, washed out musician who barely had a career in the first place, and is now trying to make something happen for himself. That’s especially true if this is angling for a comedy that can also deliver some weightier moments, which looks to be the case.
Catch all the info below, and let me know what you think. Will you be tuning in?

Tyrant Review
The problem with Tyrant, FX’s new drama about an Americanized doctor who is the son of a Middle Eastern dictator, is that the sum is far less than the seemingly random parts which never gel into an engaging version of what should be a great show.
Barry Al Fayeed (Adam Rayner) finally decides to return to the homeland he left when he was 16, because his nephew is getting married. It’s a life he hoped to cut all ties to, and we see why through flashbacks to some of his earliest days. His older brother Jamal (Ashraf Barhom) was clearly chosen to take over, and Barry was largely ignored. Such is the way of second sons. Jamal has grown into just the sort of psychopath every dictator hopes for, but he isn’t quite as bright as his younger brother.
Despite the atrocities his father visited upon him in his youth,...

Now that it is just barely summer, it’s time for the networks to try their best to get you excited for fall television. ABC wants you to get excited for their schedule, and their new shows, and I’ve got some previews for you, as well as some initial thoughts.
I have to tell you, ABC is looking more and more strange as time goes on, and the overall efforts of the network really have to make you wonder. While there are some hints of interesting shows, and one or two that might turn into worthwhile vehicles, in the Eddie and the Cruisers world of television, ABC is Joe Pantoliano, clutching his tapes, and furiously blathering about the lunacy of not giving the idiotic public what they want, especially since they keep demanding it.
To that end, ABC has declared Thursday, Shonda Rhimes night, largely because someone apparently had...
