Khaled Hosseini’s 2003 bestselling novel The Kite Runner is the sort of compelling, epic morality tale that spans eras and cultures, depicts friendship and betrayal, loyalty and cowardice, acts of kindness and demonstrations of unspeakable cruelty. With its eye on an all-but-guaranteed redemption, The Kite Runner has an unmistakable allure – equal parts beach read and Serious Literature – that proved irresistible to Hollywood and, now, Broadway.
While the 2012 film adaptation made an early splash with some critics (followed by a backlash over some controversial scenes involving the depiction of child sexual abuse), The Kite Runner, despite its earnest, prestige sheen, got little more than shrugs at awards time. Today it’s remembered mostly for the controversy.
The latest incarnation, adapted by Matthew Spangler, opens tonight at Broadway’s Hayes Theater under the direction of Giles Croft. Despite its heartfelt intentions and some impressive performances, The Kite Runner doesn’t improve in...

Originally published in 2003, The Kite Runner became a bestseller across the globe and has since been published in 70 countries, selling 31.5 million copies in 60 languages. Now this powerful story has been adapted into a stunning stage production and after a brilliant run in London it is now coming to New York. Yes, The Kite Runner is coming to Broadway for a limited engagement at The Hayes Theater (240 West 44th Street) this summer. The production comes to New York after two successful seasons in London’s West End where it was called “a cultural phenomenon” by The Sunday Express and “an enthralling tale beautifully told” by The Daily Telegraph.
One of the best-loved and most highly acclaimed novels of our time, Khaled Hosseini’s internationally best-selling novel, The Kite Runner is a haunting tale of friendship spanning cultures and continents. It follows one man’s journey to confront his past and find redemption.

In an effort to strengthen the representation of Mena and South Asian talent in the entertainment industry, the Mena Arts Advocacy Coalition (Maac) launched a global online database on Tuesday.
The database will connect emerging and established talent from these regions to film productions, studios, hiring managers and casting starting today and can be accessed at maacdatabase.com.
“As an organization, we are constantly asked for actors, writers, producers, composers and even crew from specific Middle Eastern North African (Mena) and South Asian countries who speak specific languages. Hollywood knows that audiences are demanding authenticity, and for far too long we’ve been erased from our own stories with the excuse that we were hard to find. So, we have solved that problem with the help of technology,” says Maac founder and president Azita Ghanizada.

Exclusive: Azita Ghanizada will return for season 2 of United States of Al and has been upped to recurring.
Ghanizada will continue to portray Ariana, a first-generation Afghan-American who shares Al’s (Adhir Kalyan) passion for their homeland, but their divergent worldviews often put them at odds. She is also described as Al’s “fiercely independent” love interest.
The series is about the friendship between Riley, a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Al, the Interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America.
Its second season, which began production in August, had shot one and a half episodes when the U.S. announced its withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Executive Producer Maria Ferrari explained during Warner Bros.’ TCA panel last month that the experience shifted the storyline to include a dive into the Afghanistan crisis and its subsequent fallout.

Five years ago, an actor of Middle Eastern descent arrived at a studio test for a major cable TV show that was looking to diversify its cast and was asked by the casting director what percentage Latino he was. “I’m not Latino,” he replied. “I’m Egyptian.” Without apologizing, the casting director said: “We can’t move you forward, unfortunately, because that’s not diverse.”
The actor told Deadline: “It was stated as factual, as if that is the normal trend in the business. Which is weird because everywhere else I’m never considered white — definitely not by U.S. Customs when I cross the border and get randomly selected and held back for two to four hours.”
A year later, in its 2017 negotiations for a new film and TV contract, SAG-AFTRA won recognition of Middle Eastern North African (Mena) performers as a diverse ethnic category for inclusion in its casting data report.

Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough set off on a whirlwind weekend romance in Monday, a romantic drama that IFC Films released in theaters and on-demand Friday.
It’s the fourth feature from director Argyris Papadimitropoulos, who also wrote and produced the film.
Here is the plot: When Mickey (Stan) is dragged away from his DJ set by a drunken friend and introduced to Chloe (Gough) one hot summer night in Athens, the attraction between the pair is immediately palpable. So palpable that before they know it they’re waking up naked on the beach Saturday morning. And so it goes that a one-night stand on Friday turns into a whirlwind weekend romance that leads to serious conversations when they face the harsh sunlight on Monday morning.
The pic was an official selection at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2020 Toronto Film Festival. Check out the trailer below.

Lori throwing up at his feet wasn’t quite the answer Doug expected when he popped the question at the start of “We Broke Up.” Then again, Doug calling it quits on the heels of that reaction wasn’t exactly what Lori imagined either. After all, the pair have been together for 10 good years. Luckily, audiences are in for more pleasant surprises.
In this charming outing — starring Aya Cash as Lori and William Jackson Harper as Doug — each is legitimately aggrieved by the swift turn of events in their relationship. They went from a cruise-controlled 60 to zero so quickly that the film will later revisit (in a cleverly edited montage) what precisely happened.
They are also utterly flummoxed about the rules of disengagement. Although one might hazard that atop that list would be the dictum, “Do not go with your freshly minted ex to a wedding.” But go they do...

Whenever a flick debuts at a film festival and then takes a year to come out, people can suspect the worst. Well, I’m here to tell you that Our Friend is an exception to that. I saw the movie back when it was going by The Friend as its title, during its festival run, and it’s a very good film. Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson, and Jason Segel give top notch performances, to say the least. Now, as it prepares for a January release, a Trailer has debuted, featuring a quote from none other than yours truly! That was an honor, and it’s a pleasure to be quoted in such a strong work. Take a look at the Trailer below and be sure to keep an eye out for my citation! Here’s the description I wrote for the movie last year, when it was still called The Friend...

For anyone who loves Kevin Smith (and it’s no secret that I’m chief among them), it’s been a bit of a wait for news on Killroy Was Here. Shot a few years ago, the horror anthology took a backseat to Jay and Silent Bob Reboot in the wake of Smith’s heart attack, but now, while doing a virtual version of his annual Comic-Con panel, it has revealed itself. Yes, Smith debuted a Trailer for the film, with hopes that it might be out either later on this year, or early next year. You can see the Trailer below, but first, a bit about what the flick is about! The movie is a horror anthology, loosely based on the Kilroy Was Here graffiti symbol from World War II. For those who don’t know, here’s a bit about that, from Wikipedia: “Kilroy was here is...

"Close the mouth that cannot tell... And send the monster back to hell." Every year, Kevin Smith hosts a big panel at Comic-Con on Saturday evening. But this year, with Comic-Con cancelled and taking place entirely online, Smith just live-streamed his panel from home. And he always brings a trailer to debut. Killroy Was Here is a horror comedy anthology film made by Kevin Smith. He filmed in late 2017 & early 2018 and it's finally getting finished and ready for release sometime in 2021. The various horror anthology stories are centered around the phenomenon of the "Kilroy Was Here" graffiti, about some weird bald dude with a big nose sticking over a wall. The ensemble cast includes Azita Ghanizada, Ryan O'Nan, Harley Quinn Smith, Chris Jericho, Justin Kucsulain, and Ralph Garman. This definitely looks like another Kevin Smith having fun with his friends & family kind of film. Not that scary, a bit weird,...

It’s hard to find the right tone when telling a terminal illness tale. Over at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Friend was one of the world premieres and offers up a different way of telling a cancer drama. In part, by not focusing as largely on the patient, this is more about the human toll on family members. Moreover, the movie is as much as anything a tale of friendship, and a wholly special one at that. Buoyed by some tremendous acting, this film can be a bumpy ride, but it arrives at a rather compelling place. Toronto may be losing this one in the shuffle, but that’s a real shame. The film is a look at an extraordinary friendship, based on a true story. When Matt Teague (Casey Affleck) first meets Dane Faucheux (Jason Segel), he’s prepared to hate him. After all, he’s the...

For all the progress Zoey Johnson made in her personal life during Season 2 of grown-ish, Wednesday’s finale brought her right back to where she was this time last year… albeit a few miles higher.
But let’s rewind a bit: Picking up where last week’s episode left off, the finale dropped us into the middle of Zoey telling Luca that she accepted a job offer from Joey Bada$$, which went over pretty well. Until it didn’t. Despite initially playing it cool, Luca eventually got so angry — referring to Zoey’s defense as “some double-talking snake s–t...

The Casting Society of America will sponsor town halls in Los Angeles and New York for actors of Middle Eastern, North African and South Asian decent “to effect concrete change in how actors in these historically underrepresented communities are afforded access to job opportunities.”
“I think that the entertainment industry has been responsible for perpetuating some harmful and potentially dangerous stereotypes,” Csa president Russell Boast said. “Events like this provide an opportunity to address current issues and are a crucial step towards accurate and authentic portrayals in the media.”
The town halls, set for October 22 (New York) and October 23 (Los Angeles) are part of the Csa’s ongoing Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion in Casting Initiative. Last October, it hosted an open casting call for transgender actors, and in December held an open call for performers with disabilities to showcase their talents in front of professional casting directors in cities nationwide.

Representation and inclusion on TV appear to be on the steady uptick, but a closer look shows that progress is a minuscule move of the needle. We are seeing more black, Latino and Asian representation, but as we look deeper into specific portrayals within these ethnicities and races we have seen a stagnant pool of stereotypes — especially with regard to Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) actors.
According to a new study presented by Mena Arts Advocacy Coalition (Maac) titled “Terrorists and Tyrants: Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) Actors in Prime Time and Streaming Television”, there is a major gap in representation when it comes to Mena actors. When Mena actors are on TV they largely portray — you guessed it — terrorists and tyrants, stereotypical roles that have existed since the dawn of Hollywood.

Ringling College of Art and Design just announced a partnership between the school and filmmaker extraordinaire Kevin Smith (Clerks, Red State, Tusk) for Kevin's latest project called Killroy Was Here. And according to Smith, the anthology will be a monster movie with grisly moments.
Press Release: "Sarasota, Fl, June 15, 2017 (Globe Newswire) -- Ringling College of Art and Design today announced that Kevin Smith -- iconic filmmaker, author, actor and director of Clerks, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and recent horror films Red State and Tusk; has returned to Sarasota to shoot the first installment of his latest horror anthology film Killroy Was Here. Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob helmer Kevin Smith has started filming with the Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida on his new horror project, Killroy Was Here.
The horror, which came to fruition from one of Smith’s weekly podcasts, is said to be the first offering in an anthology which has moral issues as its base. Smith went on to elaborate in the basis of the storyline.
“This is a monster movie in the sense of a classic morality tale,” Smith said. “No one wants to see you spill the blood of innocents, but when someone crosses the line and goes bad, you get to make them pay in horrible ways, and the audience cheers. We wanted to make an anthology film in the vein of ‘Creepshow.’ Killroy is like the Golem, the Boogeyman and the Grim Reaper combined.”

Kevin Smith has embarked on a new film project. He's just started shooting a horror anthology film called Killroy Was Here. I wasn't aware that Smith was working on this project, but apparently, he ended up ditching his Krampus movie project after Michael Dougherty released his Krampus movie. This new film took the place of that and the script for it was reworked to fit Killroy. As far as the main monster in the film, its name is Killroy and Smith describes him as ”Golem, the Boogeyman and the Grim Reaper combined.”
Smith wrote the film with executive producer Andrew McElfresh, and it's the first time Smith has shared a writing credit with anyone on his movies. The phrase “Kilroy Was Here” originated in American culture as graffiti during World War II. It featured a bald-headed man with a big nose peeking over a wall with his hands grabbing onto the wall.

Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Complete Unknown (Joshua Marston)

Tom (Michael Shannon) is living with his wife Rehema (Azita Ghanizada) in New York City, spending the majority of his days drafting agricultural policy emails in a cramped government office. It is...

Alice (Rachel Weisz) is in China cut open by a magician, in an ER room telling a patient to breathe, in Tanzania researching insects, and in a parked car spying on a suburban house. Complete Unknown begins by showing what it is to live as someone who, at the very least, is running from their past and has not developed an adult capacity to deal, and at the most, is inhabiting a semi-psychotic state addicted to deception. The montage, returned to later in explanatory voiceover, is one of the film’s most beautiful sequences because it is both gorgeous and graspable.
This snapshot of Alice’s world is interesting but not enough for us to care about her first family then runaway story, nor about a clichéd story of ex-hunting; in this case the ex is Tom (Michael Shannon) and she shows up at his home for a dinner party.

Rachel Weisz and Michael Shannon are dependable actors, but the script for the tedious identity drama Complete Unknown gives them flat characters stuck in underdeveloped situations. We’re introduced to Alice (Rachel Weisz), in an opening prologue montage that features her over time in several endeavors – a nurse, a magician’s assistant, and in bed telling a paramour that she’s been a teacher for many years. The rest of the story takes place in one night. Now a frog researcher fresh from a trip to Tasmania, Alice catches the eye of Clyde (Michael Chernus) in a Brooklyn office cafeteria. He immediately invites her a birthday party at the home of his co-worker Tom (Shannon) and his wife Ramina (Azita Ghanizada), a jewelry designer. There’s a dozen or so guests at the party, all entertained by the outlandish Alice, who brags of her accomplishments and confesses that years ago...

Opening in select theaters today, August 26, We Got This Covered has an exclusive clip for Joshua Marston’s (The Forgiveness of Blood, Maria Full of Grace) Complete Unknown that features Rachel Weisz battling against something of an identity crisis.
Having assumed a host of identities throughout her life, Weisz’s Alice (Jenny?) revels in anonymity, and likely has enough passports and identity documents to put even Jason Bourne to shame. But this picture, one haling from Amazon Studios and IFC Films, looks set to be a much more intimate affair than Universal’s tentpole actioner, delving into the remarkable relationship between Tom (Michael Shannon) and Weisz’s estranged lead.
At least, once Shannon’s baffled character pushes past the formalities to find out who Alice really is – a quest that may well force Tom into, ahem, the Complete Unknown. Kathy Bates, Danny Glover, Michael Chernus and Azita Ghanizada round out the ensemble.

“We are what we pretend to be so we must be careful what we pretend to be.” That lucite pearl of wisdom, which appears in the introduction of Kurt Vonnegut’s 1961 novel “Mother Night” and then reverberates beneath the rest of its pages, is as much of a warning as it is an invitation. Many of the great filmmakers have dedicated their lives to sifting through the truth of Vonnegut’s words — or at least that of the principle expressed therein — using that sentiment as a starting point from which to dive into the bottomless void of the human psyche.

One would assume that Joshua Marston’s Complete Unknown might elicit feelings of invigorated freedom – Assume, I repeat. At some point in our lives, we’ve all dreamt about starting over. Hitting the “Eject” button amidst our daily routine, and trying out a different lifestyle that could have been. This is the crux of Marston’s story (co-written by Julian Sheppard), but whatever message is trying to be conveyed (Being happy with one life? Not being afraid to start over somewhere else?) desperately gets lost in translation. Like, Sylvester Stallone trying to communicate with a Japanese businessman. Movies are supposed to make you feel something, but unfortunately, my screening ended with a sense of frustration, confusion and zero sympathetic charms – a deadly trifecta for any indie drama.

Rachel Weisz harbors an identity crisis in today’s first trailer for Sundance hit, Complete Unknown.
Hailing from Amazon Studios and IFC Films – the two backers behind the psychological thriller – this teasing snippet introduces us to Weisz’s Alice (Jenny?), an old flame to Michael Shannon’s Tom who drifts through life one discreet identity at a time.
Joshua Marston (The Forgiveness of Blood, Maria Full of Grace) is at the helm for Complete Unknown, which has immediately piqued our attention with its two stellar leads in Shannon and Weisz. Plus, there’s something dreamy and oddly mesmerizing about the latter’s performance – who is Weisz’s character, exactly? – and we can only imagine that level of intrigue will be dramatically amplified across the full feature. Kathy Bates, Danny Glover, Michael Chernus and Azita Ghanizada also star.

Most fictional stories — even ones about everyday life — start with a fantasy. In director Joshua Marston’s moody new drama “Complete Unknown,” the big “what if” is simple but strong. What if a person just walked away from her old life and started over somewhere else, with a new identity? Then what if she did it again? And again? And then what if — in the middle of the ninth version of herself — she suddenly showed up a birthday party for one of the people she left behind, some 20-odd years ago? Rachel Weisz stars as the woman, who used to be known as Jennifer but now calls herself “Alice.” Michael Shannon plays her ex-boyfriend, Tom, an agricultural analyst who’s living in New York with his wife Rehema (Azita Ghanizada), who designs jewelry. On the night of his party, Tom and Rehema have just renewed a longstanding quarrel over whether...

We’re not allergic to television, but for us Orange is the New Black’s Michael Chernus truly broke out at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, with the girlfriend stealer role in Jim Strouse’s People Places Things and as the generous giver and toker in Noah Baumbach’s Mistress America. THR reports that he is one of the last pegs in the Parts and Labor produced project from filmmaker Joshua Marston. The mostly indie actor joins the already cast supporting players Danny Glover, Kathy Bates and Azita Ghanizada. As previously reported, Rachel Weisz and Michael Shannon are toplining the project.
