Now, following his two Spidey installments, he’s back to directing smaller movies, two of which arrive this year: Gifted, which opens in theaters on Friday, and Amazon’s The Only Living Boy in New York, which first hits cinemas in August. In the following collection of tips to aspiring filmmakers, he shares advice on working on different scales, making mistakes, the importance of collaboration, and giving actors freedom.

Spider One, the infamous founder of Powerman 5000, has directed his first music video. It's for "Kiss Me Kill Me" by the Los Angeles-based band Knee High Fox, and you can see it right here.
Spider One is the brother of rock star/director Rob Zombie, and with this video he tries his hand at the horror genre, where Zombie has done most of his work. The video for "Kiss Me Kill Me" stars Christine Connolly, who fronts the band.

Post-grunge, as defined by Urban Dictionary is “Basically a watered-down, radio-friendly version of grunge music.” But as any music snob can tell you, the scourge of post-grunge goes far deeper. But in that case, just what does that really mean?
Much like post-rock and post-metal, post-grunge typically encapsulates the worst tropes of the 90s while endeavouring to reach a much wider audience. While metallic guitars are prevalent, album production is often of an arguably much higher, cleaner quality. However with a more gentrified sound, most post-grunge bands struggle to define themselves as separate entities, often relying on similar sounds and production. Perhaps a better descriptor would be ‘sad hard rock with down tuning’.
But still, some people have built empires of the mope-scream-mope dynamic. Some have risen. Some have fallen. And some have neither done neither, just plodding along and slowly declining as all post-grunge is want to do.

Last week we caught up with Powerman 5000 frontman Spider One to chat about his latest film project, the horror-comedy web series "My Wife Is a Demon," as well as the next Powerman 5000 album and more!
Brother to musician and filmmaker Rob Zombie, Spider One burst onto the industrial heavy metal music scene in 1999 with the successful release of the Powerman 5000 album Tonight the Stars Revolt! (the album contained the memorable single "When Worlds Collide" and would go on to sell more than a million copies). He then flexed his film muscles in 2011 with "Death Valley", the horror-comedy mockumentary broadcast by MTV (and now available on Netflix), which he conceived and co-executive produced. With Powerman 5000 prepping to release a new album and embark on a subsequent world tour in the coming months, the vocalist riffed on that with us as well as his web series "My Wife...

The younger gamer in all of us was very happy to hear the announcement that Mr Hawk was making a nostalgic come back. In the days of the original Playstation many of us spent hour upon hour guiding the Hawkman and his friends through the various board-based challenges the game had to offer. From the sound track to the level design, the early Tony Hawk games bring back treasured childhood memories for many, many a gamer and now they are back!
It was starting to look like developer Robomodo couldn’t do anything right. After taking the reigns of the series from Neversoft, Robomodo have produced two of the worst games in Tony Hawk’s history, in the form of Tony Hawk: Ride and Tony Hawk: Shred. The new direction for the series was based on the idea that players would want to control their skater with a plastic skateboard peripheral,...

Writer / director / musician and friend of FEARnet, Spider One has a new short film for your viewing pleasure. The Powerman 5000 frontman and Death Valley creator has written and directed "Apt. 13," a wacky short that could best be described as Being Human meets The Munsters. More after the jump. In "Apt. 13," Dracula (who hasn't had sex in nine years), Frankenstein's monster (who has... digestive issues), and the Wolfman (stoner) are all roommates who reluctantly allow Mummy (flaming intellectual) to throw a party in their apartment. It's fun and silly, complete with a canned laugh track. Check it out for yourself on Vimeo.com...

Believe it or not, I have been called a rebel. It’s happened more than once, and it’s come from multiple sources. The first time that I heard that, I was actually very surprised. When I hear the word “rebel,” it brings a certain set of images to mind, mainly revolving around leather jackets, motorcycles, tattoos, and loud Rock & Roll. Mostly, though, my first thought was “Me? Really?”
I associate a certain amount of hedonism with rebels, and, while I do know how to have fun, my moments that may equate to wanton acts of self-destruction largely involve riding my moped at full speed (because it’s essentially got two speeds, stop and wide-open, or at least it does when I drive it), or the time that I read the entire run of Dave Sim’s Cerebus in one sitting. “The Last Day” had just been released, and as...

Outside of Shock, I did a bit of hosting for FearNET (with Angie Greenup and Spider of Powerman 5000), tackling Midnight Meat Train and the Vincent Price-starring The Tingler . The Clive Barker adaptation, directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, is now airing under their "Movies With More Brains" programming and the folks at FearNET gave us a video preview, the intro to the film. This was my first time doing something for television, so go easy... (I kid.)...

Last month, yours truly was called upon by our friends at FEARnet to host a few films that are coming up on their schedule. Essentially, the channel (available online and on Verizon Fios) is getting classy and using horror vets and critics to provide a bit of insight on selected horror flicks (think the Turner Classic Movies format, but less stuffy). So, in April, you'll find me, along with Spider (from Powerman 5000) and G4's Angie Greenup, hosting The Tingler and Midnight Meat Train , respectively. This new format begins, however, on March 19, when directors Adam Green and Joe Lynch host William Friedkin's Bug . They'll also be presenting The Gate later this year. Check out a blooper reel from their exploits on the set below...

MTV is in love with dabbling in the horror genre right now what with their upcoming projects Teen Wolf and of course My Super Psycho Sweet 16 Part 2 coming at us really soon. So what's next? Why cops vs. monsters of course!
According to The Hollywood Reporter the documentary-style "Death Valley", created by Spider of Powerman 5000, has an ensemble cast that includes Caity Lotz ("Mad Men") and Tania Raymonde ("Lost") and follows the Undead Task Force, which battles zombies, vampires and werewolves that have overrun the San Fernando Valley.
"'Death Valley' is the perfect combination of horror and comedy, two genres we know our audience responds to," senior vp production Tony Dibari said. "That blend, combined with a fast pace and gritty 'follow doc' visual style, will take viewers on a wild ride where they are never sure what's around the next corner."

On the set of Alhambra, California's Powerman 5000 video 'Supervillain' , there's a green screen, special FX and a large crew. As Spider One gyrates before the screen, director Rob Hall leaps out of his directors chair and urges the singer to "Give it all ya got, man!"
Giving it all he's got is the ethos that Rob Hall lives by. Since his days as monster maker for Roger Corman all the way through Buffy and Angel, Hall's creatures were scarier, freakier and more creative than his big-budget competition. When he cuts loose on a movie, as he did with the rabid residents of Quarantine and his infected populace in the superb and disturbing remake of The Crazies, the results speak for themselves.
Not content at just being the next Rob Bottin, Hall also has a band with actor Hal Sparks and turned to directing. Besides his semi-autobiographical Lightning Bug, he...

Now let's get one key bit of trivia out of the way first: in case you've been hiding under a rock or something for the past year, "future metal" unit Powerman 5000 is the musical creation of FEARnet's very own on-camera correspondent Spider One (secret identity: Michael Cummings), who also happens to be the brother of another talented fellow by the name of Rob Zombie – you might be familiar with his work also – but just because Spider's batting for the home team, that's not the real reason I was so stoked to get a hold of their sixth studio release, which just hit stores this week. In his short but sweet reign of terror in the impressive Anchor Bay direct to DVD horror film Laid To Rest, serial killer Chrome Skull rampages through a small town wiping out everyone in his path. While he never catches the elusive, nameless girl he's pursuing, he does something even Terminator and The Persians couldn't do: He terminates 300's Lena Headey!
By the ending, it appeared that ol' Chrome Skull was deader than Disco--broken neck, crushed head, it looked like he slipped off this mortal coil and was wiped out. Of course, Jason, Freddy and Godzilla were all wiped out, too.
The cheerful Chang Tseng (pictured right), who produced Laid with his and Rob Hall's Dry County Films, is happy to report that "Chrome Skull is Not dead! We are doing Laid To Rest #2 and #3, so I guess he did not die after all...We have the treatment and concept for the sequels,...

Cyber rockers Powerman 5000’s new album, Somewhere On The Other Side Of Nowhere, is finally hitting stores this week (see the Fangoria Musick review here). The collection finds the band returning to the hard groove of their earlier work which included hits like “When Worlds Collide” and “Nobody’s Real.” “We made this record with a clear vision and a purpose,” explains frontman, Spider. “We wanted to reclaim a sound we created and represent certain influences as only a band like Powerman 5000 can.
While writing, we would watch ‘Godzilla’ or ‘Ultraman’ films to ensure the sonics were on point. We knew that this record needed to sound like the footsteps of a giant robot!”
