There will be no leap to season three for NBC’s Quantum Leap.
The network has canceled the reboot of the 1989 series after a two-season run, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The series starring Raymond Lee wrapped its sophomore season in February and ranked as one of the broadcast network’s lowest-rated scripted originals.
Quantum Leap, which was produced in-house at Universal Television, earned a speedy season two renewal as NBC kept production going in a bid to have scripted originals during the writers and actors strikes.
The follow-up to the original series hailed from Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris, who exec-produced alongside Deborah Pratt, Chris Grismer and Alex Berger. Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt developed the series and served as showrunners on the update.

“Quantum Leap” has been canceled at NBC after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
The show served as a followup to the 1989 show of the same name starring Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell. The revamped version starred Raymond Lee as physicist Dr. Ben Song, whose attempt to restart the Quantum Leap project pioneered by Dr. Sam Beckett leads to him being trapped in different people’s lives in the past just like Beckett. As he seeks to put right what once went wrong in those lives, he “leaps” to different lives while hoping that each leap will be the leap home.
The cast of the series also included Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanrisa Lee. Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt developed the series and served as executive producers alongside Martin Gero via Quinn’s House, Dean Georgaris, Deborah Pratt, Chris Grismer, and Alex Berger. Universal Television was the studio.

Exclusive: NBC has decided not to proceed with a third season of its Quantum Leap reboot starring Raymond Lee. The news comes more than a month after the two-hour Season 2 finale aired Feb. 20.
The development is not entirely surprising as the series, from Universal Television, had been on the bubble. That is in contrast to last season when Quantum Leap received a very early renewal in December 2022.
A follow-up to the original series, which aired on NBC from 1989-93, Quantum Leap is set in present day. It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.
In addition to Lee, the series stars Ernie Hudson, Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park and Nanrisa Lee.

Launching any new show is difficult but doubly so for one that’s not only a new take on a beloved franchise but an in-continuity sequel. If that was all the new Quantum Leap had to contend with it would be a lot for any group of creatives to deal with but the show was faced with a major creative shift near the start of production.
After filming three episodes, new Quantum Leap series developers Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt stepped down as showrunners. Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris then took over and have stayed with the series since. Since the two didn’t originate the concept and direction of the season, they were forced into stories that the previous showrunners had started. Gero freely admits that the initial direction of season one being out of their hands was difficult.

“Quantum Leap” will come back for Season 2 at NBC with two new series regulars: Peter Gadiot and Eliza Taylor.
One of the few scripted projects returning to broadcast TV this fall amid the Hollywood strikes, “Quantum Leap” is a sequel to the 1989 to 1993 NBC drama of the same name and set 30 years later after Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. In the new series, Raymond Lee stars as Ben Song, who makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving his team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it.

While the sneak peek will not be posted online ahead of the season’s October 4 premiere, Deadline can share some details about what audiences in the room saw. Warning: spoilers ahead!
The footage confirms that Raymond Lee’s Ben didn’t actually leap home in the finale of Season 1, as was suspected. Instead, he’s on a plane flying over Russia in 1978. He’s in the body of a man named Perez, with Roxburgh, Arnaud,...

Exclusive: NBC earlier today announced that its sci-fi drama La Brea has been renewed for a third season. I have learned that the pickup is for six episodes and that it was influenced by the possibility of a writers and/or directors and actors strike, with this likely being the show’s final chapter. Filming is slated to begin in March in Australia.
With the current WGA contract expiring May 1 and the DGA and SAG-AFTRA contracts up June 30, a potential work stoppage could impact the start of production on the new broadcast season, leaving the networks without fresh episodes of scripted series for the first few weeks of the fall.
Possibly with that in mind, I hear NBC approached the cast of La Brea about doing a short third season. Because the series regulars have a 10-episode minimum guarantee (meaning that they have to be paid at least 10 episodic fees...

NBC’s time-hopping drama La Brea will continue into the future.
The network has picked up a third season of the sci-fi series from creator and showrunner David Appelbaum. The early renewal for La Brea on Tuesday comes a few hours before the series begins the back half of its 14-episode second season.
The series is averaging about 5.37 million viewers per episode (including a week of Nielsen-measured delayed viewing, but not including streaming) in season two, along with a 0.6 rating (equivalent to about 783,000 people) in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49. Those figures are down from 7.43 million and 0.9 for season one, when La Brea was the top new drama of 2021-22 in the 18-49 demo.

“Quantum Leap” just fast-forwarded to Season 2. NBC has renewed its new “Quantum Leap,” the revival of the ’90s science-fiction series, for a second season.
This “Quantum Leap,” which stars Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Song, has been a strong performer for both NBC and for Peacock, where episodes stream next-day. “Quantum Leap” (2022) sees Song following up on the work of Scott Bakula’s lead character Dr. Sam Beckett — and his time-travel adventures — 30 years later.
“Quantum Leap” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC, following “The Voice.” Currently on a winter break, “Leap” returns January 2. (“The Voice” is airing its two-part season finale tonight and tomorrow night.) To-date, “Quantum Leap” pilot episode has amassed more than 10 million viewers across the broadcast network and NBCUniversal’s streaming service. That’s pretty good these days, but execs will love to leap back to the Nielsen ratings sheets of 1989.

Quantum Leap: Sequel series to the time-hopping adventure adds six extra episodes to premiere season
TV reboots have been happening for decades. Some to great success and some to dismal failure. High concept sci-fi shows lend themselves to easily adaptable updates that can expand the universe of the story as well as advance the technological display within the story and also in the making of the show. A recent TV series reimagining is that of a sequel to 1989’s Quantum Leap, which originally starred Scott Bakula as a time traveler who tries to get home randomly transported into the bodies of people in different eras as he tries to make his way back home.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the 2022 reboot show has now had six extra episodes added to its freshman schedule, which now brings season one to a total of 18 episodes. The new series from showrunner, Martin Gero, premiered in September with just over 3 million viewers and averaged about 3 million viewers in the first three episodes.

There’s a lot more Quantum Leap headed your way this season.
NBC has ordered six additional episodes of the freshman reboot, extending Season 1 from 12 episodes to a full season of 18, TVLine has learned. (Due to the extensive visual effects it requires, Quantum Leap, like NBC’s own La Brea, doesn’t lend itself to being a 20+ episodes-per-season show.)

The central conceit of Donald P. Bellisario's hit sci-fi series "Quantum Leap," wherein Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bacula) involuntary time travels around the second half of the 20th century to right historical wrongs, was genius in its simplicity and brilliant in its execution. Over five seasons, viewers tuned in to see where Sam would end up next -- always wondering, in the back of their minds, if this leap might bring him closer to home (or at least fill in one of his memory blanks).
The one constant throughout Sam's temporal journey was Admiral Al Calavicci (Dean Stockwell), the doctor's best friend, who appears as a hologram to help his buddy work out the purpose of his mission. Their banter-filled relationship was the show's most endearing element, thanks both to the writing and the natural chemistry between the two actors. It was what we call in 2022 a "bromance."

Over 3 million people tuned in for the network premiere of NBC's "Quantum Leap" revival, which is a sequel to the original series starring Scott Bakula (though he's not involved in it outside archive photos). People were/are clearly curious to see what this new series is all about, and according to showrunner Martin Gero, it's about "hope, heart, humor, and history," just as its predecessor was.
The new "Quantum Leap" stars Raymond Lee as physicist Ben Song, leader of the revived Quantum Leap project, who steps into the accelerator in 2022 and wakes with amnesia in the body of a bank robber circa 1985. "Getaway driver" is just the first stop on Lee's whirlwind time-traveling tour, as his consciousness continues to jump through time into different bodies so he can help people in their lives and make history better. Upon a rewatch — made difficult because episodes are only available for purchase or on the “premium” level at Peacock — the original 1989 pilot for Quantum Leap is an impressive thing.
Owing in no small part to it being a two-episode premiere, creator Donald P. Bellisario is able to go nearly the entirety of the first 45 minutes without an iota of exposition. Scott Bakula’s Sam Beckett wakes up in the body of a 1956 test pilot with no memory and he has to figure out his situation, as well as why he keeps talking to a man (Dean Stockwell’s Al) that nobody else can see. Sure, eventually things get explained, but there’s a long stretch in which the episode just lets audiences figure things out or flounder. No 2022 pilot, especially no broadcast pilot, would ever demonstrate a comparable level of confidence.

Among the entries in television’s recent reboot gold rush, “Quantum Leap,” NBC’s revival of its early-‘90s sci-fi drama, is arguably the series most deserving of a contemporary reimagining. That’s not because “Leap” was a blockbuster. It performed modestly enough to be considered a cult series by the standards of its era, clawing its way to just shy of 100 episodes across five seasons. But the high-concept hook is no less potent now than during the show’s heyday.
The original found Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula), a gifted physicist, desperate to save the time-travel technology he’s been building on the government’s dime with too little to show for it. To prove his concept and save the project, Beckett tests the technology on himself to spectacular, if inconvenient results. Beckett can indeed hurl himself to and fro about the space-time continuum, but each “leap” plops him...

“Quantum Leap” has entered the “Peak TV” era of television, but while the new NBC reboot gets off to a shaky start, there’s reason to believe this new version is still worthwhile.
Airing from 1989 to 1993, NBC’s original “Quantum Leap,” starred Scott Bakula as Dr. Sam Beckett, a scientist who has invented time travel and ends up getting trapped in time as a result of it. Sam’s particular brand of time traveling involved “leaping” into the bodies of various people through time and having to right certain wrongs throughout history before he could leap into the next. During Sam’s adventures, he would be aided by Al (Dean Stockwell), a colleague who provided him with certain answers—courtesy of Ziggy, the Project Quantum Leap supercomputer—about the people Sam would be inhabiting and helping.
It was a high-concept series that provided a lot of questions, but given the era of television,...

Plot: It’s been nearly 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now, a new team, led by physicist Ben Song (Raymond Lee), has been assembled to restart the project in hope of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.
Review: The original Quantum Leap aired from 1989 to 1993 and ushered in a unique blend of television series that combined science-fiction, hopeful stories about fate and destiny, and a sense of humor that catapulted Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell to celebrity. After thirty years, Quantum Leap is back for a reboot that serves as the sixth season of the series and an all-new take on the formula. With direct references to Bakula and his exploits traveling through time in the guise of many different people, the new Quantum Leap feels incredibly familiar and safe while still mining nostalgia for TV shows of a bygone era.

Scott Bakula is setting the record straight on why he is not involved in NBC’s Quantum Leap reboot and shuts down any speculation that he might reprise his role on the sequel, which premieres this coming Monday, September 19.

Quantum Leap will likely have a lot of eyes on it when it premieres on NBC in September, but this latest update on the reboot has us a little concerned.
Martin Gero, best known for creating Blindspot, has been elevated to showrunner on the buzzy drama series.
Gero, who had been serving as an EP, will take over from departing co-showrunners Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt.
While the pair will no longer be handling the day-to-day running of the new show, they will remain on board as executive producers.
Deadline reported the news, which comes after production has been completed on just three episodes (including the pilot).
No definite reason has been given, but the outlet states that there has been "chatter about scripts being late."
With the series fast approaching its September 19 series debut, it will be on a tight production schedule, and any hiccups could derail the planned premiere.

Lilien and Wynbrandt will remain with the project as executive producers after writing the pilot. Both Gero (“Blindspot”) and Georgaris (“Bluff City Law”) have deals with Universal Television, the studio behind the “Quantum Leap” reboot.
This behind-the-scenes leadership change for the “La Brea” executive producers arrives after the series has filmed two episodes. Production will not pause.
Seong’s character has been described as a “spiritual successor” to Beckett.

We’ll deal with the most controversial change first. The new Quantum Leap series will not begin each episode with the show’s star, Raymond Lee, looking into a mirror and saying, “Oh boy!”
“I think obviously the idea of him looking into a mirror and seeing another person’s reflection will be core to the show, and we’ll have those moments,” concedes writer and executive producer Steven Lilien. “I think the ‘Oh boy!’ was so specific to Sam Beckett, and I think we’re trying to carve out a new path for our character, Ben.”
The original Quantum Leap told the adventures of Dr. Sam Beckett after his time travel experiment leaves him jumping randomly through different times and different bodies. His adventures saw him play the roles of Lee Harvey Oswald, Elvis Presley, and on one memorable occasion, a chimp in the space program.

The twists and turns of La Brea Season 1 look set to be amplified on La Brea Season 2.
NBC dropped the first teaser for the second this season this week, and it looks like we're in for something much twistier than before.
"Where the hell are we?" Josh utters in the 15-second promo for the sinkhole drama that emerged as a heavy hitter in the ratings last fall.
The clip offers some big scenes, but all of the exciting stuff is actually shared in the official synopsis for the season ahead.

The initial logline revealed that it’s “been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.”
