- Although he only tallied 15 stolen bases in his playing career, his most memorable "stolen base" occurred as Pittsburgh Pirates manager on June 26, 2001. In a game against the Milwaukee Brewers, McClendon became so enraged with the umpiring that he ripped out first base and carried it off into the dugout. Rather than try to retrieve the base, the umpires replaced the base with a new one.
