Billy Strings will go back to where it all began with his new album Me/And/Dad, a collaborative project between the young bluegrass star and his father, Terry Barber. The new project featuring country and bluegrass classics will be released Nov. 18 and includes two songs that were released today: “Long Journey Home” and “Life to Go.”
The traditional tune “Long Journey Home” shows off Strings’ lightning-fast picking as well as the harmonizing between him and Barber, who also plays guitar on the track. “Life to Go” is an acoustic...

“High and Hurt,” the second track off Iceage’s new album, Seek Shelter, begins with a sneer: “You ain’t ready for it/Still, take the throw/Life’s a competition, don’t you know?” frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt bellows with an imperious air, his words practically curling like cigar smoke. Beneath him, the drums and bass shake, and the guitars spring up like spikes; the rumble is contained by a heady fog that feels like the handiwork of their first outside producer, Peter Kember (a.k.a. Sonic Boom...

Loretta Lynn will return with a new studio album in 2021. Still Woman Enough, the follow-up to Lynn’s 2018 release Wouldn’t It Be Great, arrives March 19th and features guests like Tanya Tucker and Margo Price.
The 13-track collection was produced by Lynn’s daughter Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash and features new recordings of several of Lynn’s classic songs, as well as interpretations of country standards like Hank Williams’ “I Saw the Light” and the Carter Family’s “Keep on the Sunny Side.” As its title suggests,...

This Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom analysis contains spoilers. You can find our spoiler-free review here.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom tells the story of a group of 1920s musicians, composites of session players at the time, waiting for “the Mother of the Blues” to bring her big voice to the big room at Hot Rhythm Recordings. “Ma” Rainey, positively channeled by Viola Davis in the film, owned the copyrights of her songs, some of which became blues standards. Her trumpet player, Levee, masterfully captured by Chadwick Boseman in his cinematic swan song, doesn’t catch that break. The young horn player spends a lot of his time finishing a song for the session producer Sturdyvant (Jonny Coyne). He’s promised a recording using his arrangement.
The delivery of that promise first comes as a devaluation. The producer pounces on Levee when he’s down. He’d just been fired...

Kurt Vile was sitting in the Butcher Shoppe studio in Nashville last December when he floated a pipe-dream idea to producer Dave Ferguson. Vile was slated to perform at the Grand Ole Opry with his hero John Prine two nights later and asked if Ferguson would call the songwriting legend and ask if he felt like dropping by the studio.
“Ferg was like, ‘What are you doing, Prine?’” Vile recalls. “Prine was like, ‘I’m watching the game!’”
Vile was astounded when, later that evening, after finishing his game, Prine...

In the opening minutes of the engrossing Ken Burns film Country Music, premiering Sunday on PBS, Cma Award-winning singer Kathy Mattea recalls her days as a tour guide at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the hours she spent in close study of one of the museum’s greatest treasures, “The Sources of Country Music,” a six-by-ten-foot mural painted by Thomas Hart Benton and completed just before his death in 1975. With gospel singers, a cowboy strumming guitar, fiddlers, a dulcimer player, and an African-American banjo picker, the...

“There was a saying: ‘The blues had a baby and they called it rock & roll.’ I always say, ‘Yeah, and I think the daddy was a hillbilly.” That’s Country Music Hall of Fame member Bobby Braddock, writer of songs including “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” on the genesis of rock music. He makes the case that its birth, near the end of the first half of the 20th century, was as influenced by country music as it was the blues.

Bob Dylan and Neil Young wrapped up their co-headlining show at Kilkenny, Ireland’s Nowlan Park Sunday evening by performing “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” marking the first time the two have shared a stage since a show at New York’s Roseland Ballroom in 1994. Here is a fan-shot video of the performance.
“Will The Circle be Unbroken” is a traditional hymn that dates back to the early 20th century. In 1935, it was recorded by Carter Family patriarch A.P. Carter, which is likely is likely the version that Dylan first heard.

Carlene Carter concluded her first “Wonderful World of Women Who Write” series of in-the-round performances at Nashville’s Bluebird Café Tuesday night, with the casual atmosphere, off-kilter humor, surprise guests and memorable performances making for an enchanting pre-Halloween treat. Featuring Gretchen Peters and Matraca Berg, with additional unannounced performances by Terri Clark and Erin Enderlin, the two-hour show at Nashville’s iconic listening room was yet another reminder of the empowering role of women in country music.

Here’s a bit of good news:
Tfh guru and friend-of-the-site Allison Anders will direct The June Carter Cash Story, an original movie about the life of June Carter Cash (wife of Johnny). The movie will star Jewel and starts filming (ahem) this June in Atlanta, for a schedule premiere on Lifetime this fall. I’d break down all the posts in the trades (Deadline! The Hollywood Reporter!), but Allison was kind enough to give us the lowdown directly.
[The June Carter Cash Story] tells June Carter’s story from her point of view (so it’s different from Walk The Line which was about Cash). While the film is also about her marriage to Johnny Cash, even his drug problem is focused back on June and her own recovery. The film is also about her life as a girl in Virginia in the Carter Family, her first two marriages, her children, and her own creativity — her drive,...

Over the course of the last week, the regular critics here on Pajiba have assembled their own individual genre lists, covering the top ten films in horror, comic-book adaptations, love stories, comedies, kid's flicks, indies, foreign-language films, action movies, and sci-fi. The Top 20 Films of the Decade, however, has been a collaborative project, not just among the critics here, but our readership. Over the summer, in a comment diversion, our readers also noted their favorite films of the decade, and the collective reader list was given equal weight with each of the critic's lists, all of which resulted in what you see below: The Top 20 Films of the Aughts. In the end, I believe this Top 20 reflects the personality and sensibility of Pajiba as accurately as can be done, capturing the intelligence, quirk, weirdness, the sense of humor, geekiness, and -- ultimately -- the thoughtfulness of the critics and the readership here.

The tough part about assembling this list was excluding unintentional comedies; I mean, some of the hardest laughs you'll ever experience come during Pearl Harbor's love scenes. But in truth, there were a lot of great comedies in the 2000s, intentional ones, and they fell into every category. Some were straightforward, some were absurd, some were genre hybrids, and some snuck up behind you with heartbreak. But they've all got something in common: They're smarter than you'd think. These are subversive, interesting movies, whether they're making dick jokes or telling stories about lost love.
And they are all, of course, funny. That's something that came in handy during the decade, because let's face it, 2000-09 was just a horrible span of years, bookended by war and financial ruin and filled in between with every kind of disgusting letdown imaginable. It was an era of lowered expectations on every front,...
