If indie thrillers with big ideas are your thing, you won't be disappointed by Nathaniel Atcheson's Domain (review).
The movie unfolds after a flu decimates most of the human population and focuses on a group of 7 individuals who were lucky enough to be randomly selected to inhabit one of the half a million bunkers built by a company called Survival Technologies.
By the time we meet the survivors, they've been living in these pods for a while and the relationships are starting to show wear and we get to watch as things start to fall apart.

An intriguing Twilight Zone premise gives way to a deadly mystery in Nathaniel Atcheson's fascinating new sci-fi indie, Domain, which just had its world premier at the Austin Other Worlds Film Festival. In the film, more than half a million survivors of a deadly virus have moved underground into isolated, self-regulating bunkers. We're told through a corporate video (hosted by the inimitable Beth Grant, Donnie Darko), that individuals are isolated in order to ensure the the virus won't be able to spread through the remaining population. Communication between survivors is only possible through a two-way video interface called "Domain", and only pods of seven people are able to communicate as a group - this being deemed the optimum number of community participants. As the film begins, we...

Sealed inside self-contained bunkers, they are humanity's only hope, but the final flickering flame of civilization could be snuffed out for good when Earth's last survivors start vanishing in the new sci-fi thriller Domain. Ahead of the film's world premiere at the Other Worlds Austin Sci-Fi Film Festival this Sunday, a new clip teases a disturbing disappearance.
Synopsis: "After a deadly virus wipes out most of humanity, the survivors are forced to wait alone in self-sustaining bunkers while the viral threat runs its course. Able to communicate through a networked video interface, the survivors wait for years and slowly become a motley family of sorts. But their fragile social ecosystem is shattered when, one by one, they start mysteriously disappearing from their bunkers."
Written and directed by Nathaniel Atcheson, Domain stars Britt Lower, Ryan Merriman, Sonja Sohn, Beth Grant, William Gregory Lee, Kevin Sizemore, Nick Gomez, and Cedric Sanders.

Tagline: "No Exit.' Sci-fi news and review site QuietEarth.us has posted a trailer for Nathaniel Atcheson's Domain. The film is a blend of sci-fi and horror as a virus forces survivors below ground. Except, in a series of bunkers, something even more sinister has been released amongst the inhabitants. Domain is set for a showing at Other Worlds Austin, in early December. As well, an official trailer for the film has been released and film fans can find it here. For more on the story, a virus has wiped out much of humanity. Survivors wait, alone, below ground, in a series of bunkers. The inhabitants communicate through a video intercom-like system. But soon, people begin to crack under the pressure of isolation. The film is slightly reminiscent of others. Though, the tone of Domain is darker than most. Matt Osterman's slightly average 400 Days (2015) dealt with a...

Typically lost amongst all the big media hoopla of panels, booths, celebrity appearances, etc., is that San Diego’s annual Comic-Con hosts an International Independent Film Festival that runs concurrently along with the convention, which will be this year on July 22-25.
This is a full-fledged fest with short and feature-length films from all over the world that are typically either genre or comic book related. The full lineup of films screening this year is listed below. Screening blocks are broken up by genre: Action/Adventure, Animation, Comics, Horror, Documentary, Humor and Science Fiction.
Not listed below are the assorted panels that will be held specifically for the festival. Plus, on Sunday there will be an Awards Presentation followed by repeat screenings of all the winners.
The festival is doing something a little bit differently this year in that it’s not going to be held in the actual convention center.

Los Angeles may be considered the film capital of the world, but what is “film” these days anyway? A new L.A-based festival has just popped up that addresses and celebrates all of the unique forms that visual storytelling can take in our new media world.
The inaugural New Media Film Festival will run the course of one weekend, June 11-13, at the Downtown Independent theater and show a mix of Internet-based short films, “webisodes,” documentaries that deal with the way media influences and is influenced by real world affairs and feature films in which new media figures as a major story element.
While the festival is strictly concerned with new media, I do want to note that there is a slight “underground” connection. While the fest was founded by Susan Johnston, the event’s Artistic Director is David Kleiler, who founded the Boston Underground Film Festival way back in 1998. Plus,...

An Std-based nickname for the title of a film is going to make people curious and want to check out the film. It certainly worked on me, as I knew nothing about Herpes Boy before I watched it other than its oddly intriguing title. I, of course, hoped that the film was more than just that attention-getting title – well, it is.

Herpes Boy won the Austin Film Festival Audience Award in the Comedy Vanguard category, which should come as no surprise to anyone fortunate enough to catch either of the sold-out Aff screenings. The filmmakers and stars -- including the charming Beth Grant who also co-produced the film -- chose to stand during both screenings so that more festival attendees could see their film. With such an endearing and supportive force, it's no wonder that heart and passion transfers to the screen in this funny and poignant film.
Herpes Boy was directed by Nathaniel Atcheson and is based on the Herpes Boy YouTube web series created by Byron Lane in 2007. In the screen adaptation Byron wrote, he plays the lead character Rudolph Murray, who hates his life and is a bit of a hypochondriac. As the year comes to a close on these Take Fivers' adventures, Back Stage seeks five working actors to take their places and write monthly about their 2010 experiences. If you are interested, contact Back Stage Executive Editor Dany Margolies at dmargolies@backstage.com, with "Take Five" in the subject line. Let us know a bit about you and your interest in writing, and include a headshot and résumé. We are seeking working actors from anywhere in the country.Beth Grant, Los AngelesOn the plane, headed back to L.A. from the Austin Film Festival, where the movie I helped produce, the sweet-hearted "Herpes Boy," the kid with a birthmark and an unfortunate nickname, had its world premiere. Our modestly budgeted, truly independent little movie was a great big fat hit. We sold out both screenings, sadly having to turn people away. We got great reviews and did many press interviews,...

Austin Film Festival (Aff) has announced the 2009 Audience Award winners, and I'm happy to report that among the winners were a few Texas films as well as some of our favorites from the fest. Aff also announced the dates for next year's film festival and conference: October 21-28, 2010.
Throughout the week of the festival, audience members were invited to rate films by ballot after each screening. Check out Jenn Brown's review of Happy Ending, which was written and directed by Atsuriho Yamada, and which won the Aff Narrative Feature Competition audience award.
Another favorite film that won was Herpes Boy, in the Comedy Vanguard Audience Award category. I caught up with writer Byron Lane and director Nathaniel Atcheson at their second screening after-party, and they expressed gratitude to Aff for allowing them to premiere their film in Austin.

The comedy Herpes Boy sold out both its screenings during Austin Film Festival (Aff) this week. The director, producer and cast gave up their seats at the second screening so more festival attendees could gain admission. Speaking afterwards with writer/lead actor Byron Lane and lead actress Ahna O'Reilly (who is Tim O'Reilly's niece) confirmed the humility and enthusiasm of cast and crew for what proves to be a funny and poignant film. I also enjoyed talking with director Nathaniel Atcheson about the film and festivals, but the true gem was co-producer and actress Beth Grant. I spent more time talking with her over the last few days than any other filmmaker at Aff. Keep an eye on Slackerwood for a special podcast where Beth talks about Herpes Boy along with Donnie Darko, Rain Man, Sandra Bullock, Marlo Brando, Johnny Depp and so much more.
