As Major League Baseball pauses for the All-Star Break, let’s break to talk about an All-Star for the ages, fireballer Nolan Ryan.
The Hall of Fame pitcher holds a number of records that many experts believe will never be broken, including seven career no hitters and 5,714 total strikeouts, almost a thousand more than the guy at number two on that rarified list—Randy Johnson.
Ryan’s incredible accomplishments are detailed in the documentary Facing Nolan, directed by Bradley Jackson, which debuts on digital platforms next Tuesday. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in March in Ryan’s home state of Texas, and has gone on to earn about half a million dollars in theatrical release.
It may be appropriate that when Jackson first proposed the documentary to Ryan (if you’ll pardon the baseball metaphor) he struck out.

The big screen debut of Marcel The Shell With Shoes On opened at 170K on six screens in New York and LA, the highest PSA of the weekend at 28,267 for the iconic lonely snail voiced by Jenny Slate.
The mock documentary about the loveable anthropomorphic mollusk hails from distributor A24, a distributor that manages to hit pay dirt more often than not, and is based on the popular YouTube series and illustrated kids’ book.
“It takes at least 20 shells to have a community,” Marcel says in the film. “My cousin fell asleep in a pocket and that’s why I don’t like the saying, ‘everything comes out in the wash.; Because sometimes it doesn’t.” He loves 60 Minutes “because Leslie Stahl is absolutely fearless.” It’s a combination of stop-motion and traditional animation and live action with Slate, Isabella Rossellini, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann and Stahl.

"Without a doubt, he was the most intimidating pitcher in the history of the game." Utopia has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary titled Facing Nolan, profiling the baseball legend Nolan Ryan. This already premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival last month, and will show in theaters on May 24th for a special event. In the world of Major League Baseball no one has created a mythology like Nolan Ryan. Told from the point of view of the hitters who faced him (which is a great setup for a doc about him) and the teammates who revered him, Facing Nolan is the definitive documentary film about a Texas legend. Directed by Bradley Jackson the film features new interviews with Nolan Ryan, President George W. Bradley Jackson’s “Facing Ryan” tells the story of an agreeable fellow from small-town Texas who married his high school sweetheart, followed his dream of playing major league baseball, pitched for four MLB teams over a 27-year career while operating a cattle ranch during off-season, set records for no-hitters and strikeouts that remain unbroken to this day, held high-profile executive positions with two of his former teams more than a decade after his retirement from the game, and currently resides on the ranch where he and his wife, the loving and supportive life partner he wed back in 1967, are frequently surrounded by their children and grandchildren.

I’m not really a baseball fan. I enjoy taking my kids to watch the Dodgers play from time to time, I love a Baseball movie, and I find the history of the sport interesting, but I don’t follow the game.
There’s a baseball documentary coming out next month called Fastball, which is narrated by Kevin Costner, who is the perfect person to narrate a doc like this. Despite being a rocker through and through, ever since I heard Hoodie Allen’s Pep Rally mixtape back during my Long Island college years, the rapper’s tracks have made their way onto almost every playlist I whip up. While it’s something I’ll never understand, my love of Hoodie’s beats are echoed by the always growing numbers of the “Hoodie Mob,” those devout fans who Tweet incessantly at the social media butterfly that is Hoodie Allen. The man loves his fans as much as he loves his music, and that’s something that has helped establish a skyrocketing popularity destined for super-stardom.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw pitched the first-ever no-hitter of his career – and it might be the best no-hitter ever thrown in the history of Major League Baseball.
Clayton Kershaw's No-Hitter
Kershaw’s no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies was the 283rd on record, but the first in which the pitcher had 15 strikeouts and didn’t walk a single batter. While Nolan Ryan struck out 15 batters in three no-hitters, he walked players each time. Kershaw only threw three balls to one batter all night.
“That’s probably the best combination he’s had of his slider and curveball working on the same night,” catcher A.J. Ellis told the Los Angeles Times. “When you got those things going, nights like this are possible.”
Kershaw's fastball was also hot, coming in at 94 to 95 mph.
"You don't really ever think about doing something like that," Kershaw said of his no-hitter, reported the Times.

Their other pastime is engaging in bloody brawls with “rockers,” throwbacks to the 1950s, who listen to Elvis and Gene Vincent, wear leather biker gear, grease in their hair and drive massive motorcycles a la Marlon Brando in “The Wild One.” Often cited as a worthy successor to “Rebel Without a Cause” as the greatest angry youth picture ever made, it is that and more, including a first cousin to the “kitchen sink” dramas of scribes John Osborne,...

Hate it or love it, baseball will always be known as America’s Pastime. It’s a sport that turns friends into enemies during an intense pennant chase. For a long time, baseball games, much like golfing games, were the bane of sports gamers. Capturing the inter-league rivalries or the solitary tension of being on the pitcher’s mound or in the batter’s box could never quite compare to the real thing. Then, Mlb 12: The Show stepped onto the field to give gamers one of the best baseball gaming experiences in the market. While the commentary may not be a match for the 2K Sports’ baseball franchise, The Show succeeds where it matters – on the field.

Think you escaped New Girl’s quirky wrath, thanks to the World Series? Tough tator tots, tooter! In a scene that seemed more fit for a joke than real life (Nolan Ryan, George W. Bush, and Zooey Deschanel walk into a baseball stadium… ), New Girl darling Deschanel reminded viewers that her Fox hit is still alive — and picked up for a whole season — with a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Game 4 of the World Series. Though I’ve never been a fan of Deschanel’s She & Him tunes or the apparent belief that those with big eyes and bangs lead to vocal talent,...

The second mishap in a major baseball this season happened on Thursday, July 7 night when Texas Rangers played against Oakland Athletics. A 39-year-old fan who attended the game fell to his death when trying to catch a baseball thrown at him by reigning American League Most Valuable Player Josh Hamilton.
Shannon Stone, a firefighter from Brownwood, Texas came to the game with his young son who tragically saw his father fell over the railing in front of him. Another fan Ronnie Hargis who sat next to Stone tried to catch him by foot but failed. "He went straight down," Hargis recalled. "I tried to grab him, but I couldn't. I tried to slow him down a little bit."
Stone fell 14 feet high behind the score display. He was conscious when being brought on a stretcher into an ambulance but he died of his injuries on the way to the hospital.

Shannon Stone, a 39-year-old firefighter from Brownwood, TX, fell 20 feet during a Texas Rangers/Oakland Athletics game Thursday (July 7). He later died at the hospital, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.
Stone was at the game with his young son. After between-inning warm-ups in the top of the 2nd inning, Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton tossed his warm-up ball into the stands, which is a very typical practice at major league games. Stone reached too far over the low railing and fell to the concrete below the stands.
"We had a very tragic accident tonight and one of our fans lost their life reaching over the rail trying to get a ball," says team president Nolan Ryan. "As an organization, and as our team members and our staff, we're very heavy-hearted about this, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."
Ryan also says Hamilton is "very distraught" over the incident.

At the beginning of these Major League Baseball playoffs, I read somewhere that if you wanted to see a World Series that included the two teams representing the longest suffering franchises, then the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers were your teams of choice. The Yankees are gluttons for titles. The Phillies won only two years ago. The Braves won it in 1995, and the Reds won it in 1990. The Twins recently were the victims of domination by the Yankees in the playoffs, but they have two championships to their credit from 1987 and 1991. The Tampa Bay Rays have never won the World Series, but they have only been in existence for fifteen years, and they did win the American League two years ago.
So for those of you who enjoy "spreading the wealth," as President Obama might say, this is the World Series for you. The Giants have taken several trips to the World Series,...

In case you weren't aware, Wednesday (October 6) marked the beginning of the 2010 version of the Major League Baseball playoffs. Don't worry if you were too distracted by your fantasy football roster to remember, as the end of the season was relatively drama-free (save for fans of the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres, whose race came down to the final day). This year's crop of playoff teams is a mixture of the usual suspects (the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Tampa Bay Rays) mixed with a load of surprising upstarts (the Cincinnati Reds, the Texas Rangers). After yesterday's action, the Yankees, Rangers and Phillies are each one step closer to playing in the World Series, but it was the Phillies' dismantling of the Reds that really caught the attention of the sports world, as pitcher Roy Halladay dismantled the best-hitting team in the National League on...

For 22 seasons, Randy Johnson terrorized hitters in Major League Baseball. He would have cast fear into the hearts of batters if only for his height (he stands at 6'10"), but he also had one of the most blistering fastballs in the game and a sharp slider. Over the course of his career with six different franchises (including the Expos, Mariners, Astros, Yankees, Giants and two stints with the Diamondbacks), he amassed 303 wins and 4,875 strikeouts (the second most of all time, behind Nolan Ryan). Johnson threw two no-hitters in his career, including one perfect game (one of only 20 in the history of Major League Baseball). He just retired from baseball this year, and when it comes time to add his name to the Hall of Fame ballot, he is assured entry into Cooperstown.
And with baseball behind him, Johnson has turned to his other love: photography.

The Texas Rangers were sold early Thursday morning for $385 million, the Major League Baseball team said on its Website.
The new owners are team president and Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenberg, a lawyer who already owns two minor-league teams.
They edged out a group including Mark Cuban and Houston investor Jim Crane.
News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch had signaled Wednesday afternoon that his media conglomerate never even took a look at buying the team despite reports to the contrary. He told analysts in his quarterly earnings conference call that News Corp. is not in the business of owning sports teams, but sports broadcast rights.
News Corp.'s Fox has Rangers local TV rights through 2014 as part of an existing agreement that will carry over to the new owners.

Saturday's Uncle Barky Show appearance by WFAA8's Dale Hansen and Pete Delkus netted a $1,000 donation from Stratos restaurant to the guests' designated charities. ...Delkus, previously a pitching prospect in the Minnesota Twins minor league system, also recounted how he blew out his elbow while foolishly trying to match the speed of Nolan Ryan, who at the time still had a blazing fastball despite being as old as Delkus' father.
