The NFL is canceling its annual Hall of Fame Game, which this year was to feature the Dallas Cowboys against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 6 on NBC. The traditionally preseason opener in Canton, Ohio, the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is played ahead of the hall’s induction ceremony, which has now been postponed.
Both events were scrubbed because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report on the league’s website. The NFL is still planning a full season that would start September 10; both the Cowboys and Steelers would have started training camps early due to the game but now are expected to convene with the rest of the teams at the end of July.
The league has been adamant that its 2020 season would begin on time. It held its draft virtually earlier this year. It’s unclear whether today’s decision could impact the currently planned four-week preseason.

As a man who respects the sanctity of NFL Sundays, I entered Concussion with mixed emotions. Could Peter Landesman’s medical drama leave Roger Goodell’s regime nursing a black eye, or would the film be regarded as Hollywood propaganda? The research, stories, and statistics are all real, but the film’s power relies solely on execution – something Landesman muddies. Dr. Bennet Omalu’s pursuit of the American dream is uplifting, almost achieving a Disney-like magic, yet Landesman’s portrayal of the NFL’s evil empire only respects the good doctor’s point of view. It’s an important topic, but there’s a fair trial that’s missing here – even if such respect isn’t deserved.

NEW YORK -- After 16 years at the helm of America's most popular and media-savvy sport, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue will retire in the summer. Tagliabue leaves behind a legacy that has built the NFL into an even bigger powerhouse than it was when he inherited the helm of the league from the legendary Pete Rozelle. Under Tagliabue's guidance, the NFL has received top dollar for its TV rights, created a highly successful cable channel and ensured labor harmony and agreements that will keep the game rolling on multiple platforms until early into the next decade. "There's no doubt in my mind that he took Pete Rozelle's legacy and made it so much greater," Fox Sports chairman David Hill said Monday. It was Tagliabue, along with the NFL owners, who took what Hill called a "huge roll of the dice" to grant TV rights to the fledgling Fox Broadcasting Co. in the early 1990s.

The NFL rewrote its television playbook Monday, announcing the move of Monday Night Football in 2006 from ABC to ESPN, which will hand off its own Sunday football franchise to NBC. The double deal signaled a seismic shift in the primetime landscape, sending a veritable broadcast institution of 35 years to basic cable while still keeping it under the aegis of the Walt Disney Co., which owns ABC and ESPN. While ABC's resurgent entertainment division figures out how to capitalize on three new hours, struggling NBC will re-enter the football business by ceding an unprecedented four-hour block to the NFL. "These agreements improve our television arrangements for fans," NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said. "They underscore our unique commitment to broadcast television and our tradition of delivering our games to the widest possible audience. In the current media environment, Sunday is now the better night for our primetime broadcast package." Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but sources said NBC will pay an average of $600 million a year for a total of $3.6 billion for the deal, which will run from 2006-11. NBC also will get the Super Bowls and Pro Bowls in 2009 and 2012. ESPN paid an average of $600 million a year for Sunday Night Football in the current contract, according to estimates.

NEW YORK -- Negotiations between the NFL and the Walt Disney Co. over a new football rights deal are hung up over price -- and might be complicated by the league's consideration of getting in on the ground floor of another "major sports network," league officials said as the 2004-05 NFL season drew to a close with Sunday's Super Bowl. "We have a disagreement about what the rights fees should be, based not on wishful thinking, but based on what we think the rights fees would be in the marketplace as it is," NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue told reporters during a pre-Super Bowl news conference in Jacksonville, Fla. He said the NFL was looking at the negotiations from a strategic perspective, and said, "We are giving very serious consideration to being part of the launch of another major sports network on cable and satellite television." Tagliabue wouldn't elaborate on the specifics of the new outlet in his remarks to reporters Friday, but other companies -- including Fox and Comcast -- have been mentioned as possibly challenging ESPN with a new national sports network. Disney's ABC pays about $550 million a year in the current rights deal for "Monday Night Football" but, like most other broadcasters, loses money. Sister network ESPN pays about $600 million a year for the Sunday night package, which reportedly is profitable for the all-sports channel.
