In 1978 the NFL introduced a new rule limiting the blocking of wide receivers to within the first five yards from the line of scrimmage, this is commonly referred to as the 'Mel Blount rule' as he had 23 interceptions in the prior 3 years and the league was trying to increase offensive production.
