Year 2023 will be remembered in Hollywood for various phenomena — the strikes, Barbenheimer — but for Latinos, 2023 was the year that saw a relatively significant number of movies and TV releases from and about their community, in a variety of genres. With actors and writers spending about half of last year unable to promote their projects, the atmosphere at Neuehouse in Hollywood was all the more electric last Friday evening as a who’s who of Latin entertainment, media, sports and politics came together to toast the excellence they saw on the big and small screens.
The event, La Cena Los Angeles, was an expansion of the intimate multi-city La Cena dinner series started last year by culture and impact consultant Ruben Garcia, formerly co-head of cultural business strategy at CAA, to cultivate community among impactful Latino figures across disciplines.

Exclusive: NBC has increased the order of new drama series The Irrational by one episode. Originally picked up for 10 episodes, the series starring Jesse L. Martin will now produce 11 episodes in its first season. Meanwhile, Season 2 of NBC’s comedy series Lopez v. Lopez will consist of 10 episodes, down from the previously ordered 13.
The adjustments come as NBC is fine-tuning its scheduling plans for midseason. The network will likely reveal its midseason premiere dates next week after CBS and ABC announced theirs over the last few days.
The Irrational had filmed 7 episodes when the strike suspended production. The drama is scheduled to resume production next week in Vancouver. It was initially supposed to shoot the three remaining episodes, now that number has gone up to four.

The WGA strike and its work-stoppage left thousands of writers with an indefinite amount of free time to fill their days. Some are spending it on the picket lines, while others are tending to their personal lives. On May 10, close to 400 striking writers did both by mixing picketing and pleasure at the inaugural “Strike Up a Romance,” an inclusive, 21+ singles picket and party.

In Friday night’s episode of NBC’s “Lopez vs. Lopez,” George and Mayan Lopez’s father-daughter duo bicker about the definition of “gaslighting” and which parent of hers overstepped in a workplace matter. You can view an exclusive clip from the episode, aptly titled “Lopez vs. Gaslighting,” above.
The minute-long video sees Mayan confronting George about allegedly encouraging her mother to speak with her boss to enable her to leave work early, which he denies. “I would never gaslight you. Gas is way too expensive,” he says, completely misunderstanding the definition of the word in the most dad way possible.

Producer Debby Wolfe was, like the rest of us, “feeding her TikTok addiction” one morning at 3 a.m. when she happened to stumble upon Mayan Lopez on her For You Page.
“The video that I saw was, like, where she was revealing these sordid details of her parents’ divorce, and she was twerking the entire time,” Wolfe recalled during an interview with TheWrap. “And I was like, ‘This is a show’ … There was this Gen Z Latina, and she’s unafraid to call out her Boomer father for bad parenting. And it was just so raw and honest and hilarious that the vision for the show just immediately hit me.”
That’s the basis for NBC’s “Lopez vs. Lopez,” which premieres its pilot episode Friday night. Drawing from the real lives of father-daughter duo George and Mayan Lopez, the sitcom explores family dysfunction and reunion through a distinctly Latinx lens.

The first TV series adapted from a TikTok is upon us, though it’s also rooted in a groundbreaking Latino show from the early 2000s.
The premiere of NBC’s “Lopez vs. Lopez” on Nov. 4 will bring George Lopez back to broadcast network comedy 15 years after the conclusion of his self-titled ABC series. This time, he’s sharing the soundstage with his daughter, Mayan Lopez. They star as a father and a daughter working to repair their relationship in a fictionalized version of their own experience.
Mayan and George hadn’t been on regular speaking terms for nearly a decade because of his infidelity and eventual split from her mother. But when the pandemic hit, their worry for George, who is immunocompromised, unexpectedly brought the whole family back together — and Mayan couldn’t help chronicling it on social media.

The title of NBC’s Lopez vs. Lopez refers to the generational conflict between the partially estranged father and daughter played by real-life father and daughter George Lopez and Mayan Lopez.
It could just as easily refer to a generational conflict in television comedy itself, not necessarily between the instincts of co-creators George and Mayan (with Debby Wolfe), but between a ’90s/’00s version of a broadcast sitcom — heavy on the obvious punchlines, playing to the back row of the studio audience — and something more nuanced, in the ’70s/Norman-Lear vein or recent emulators like The Carmichael Show or One Day at a Time.
Through the two episodes sent to critics, Mayan is kinda winning within the show — she’s Gen Z, so she’s the future, and whatnot — but the broader version of the sitcom is clearly in control on a formal and tonal level.

"I am an actress, writer, and producer, as well as a content creator," Mayan Lopez tells Popsugar when asked to define herself. She's got a new show on NBC this fall, "Lopez vs. Lopez," which she both stars in and produces. Mayan jokes the sitcom is "trying to put the 'fun' back in 'family dysfunction'" by telling the story of a young woman coming into her own and reconciling with her estranged father. Her real-life father, comedian George Lopez, stars alongside her, playing the show's TV dad. Talk about a full-circle moment.
"Ever since I can remember, I've always wanted to be a performer," Mayan shares. "I got the acting bug or the comedy acting bug from watching 'I Love Lucy.' I've probably watched it from the beginning four or five times." As someone who identifies as both Mexican and Cuban, Mayan says, "even just seeing Desi Arnaz...

Mayan Lopez, star of “Lopez vs. Lopez” and daughter to comedian George Lopez, has opened up about following in her father’s showbiz footsteps. Speaking at NBC’s virtual summer press tour panel at the Television Critics Association, she said that growing up behind the scenes of “The George Lopez Show” is where she first “fell in love” with acting and creating – but she’s still had to pay her dues and put in the work.

Exclusive: Freevee, Amazon’s ad-supported video streaming service is developing Arranged, a half-hour single-camera romantic comedy series co-written and executive produced by With Love creator Gloria Calderón Kellett and Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam. The project stems from Kellett’s GloNation Studios under the company’s overall deal with Amazon Studios.
Arranged follows a self-destructive movie star (Killam) and an ambitious pop Latina diva who agree to a mutually beneficial “public relationship” in order to help sell her upcoming breakup album and save his declining career, a decision they immediately regret as they quickly realize they hate each other’s guts.
The series is fictional but there are obvious points of reference: the high-profile romances between Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck as well as Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson.
Kellett and Killam will executive produce with Marc Provissiero (Pen15) for Kellett’s GloNation banner as part of her Amazon Studios deal.
