The 2024 Tribeca Festival has added 11 new feature films to its lineup — including a Hannah Einbinder standup special from Max — and has also set a world premiere of Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One on June 26 in partnership with Paramount Pictures and Imax just ahead of the film’s theatrical release. The red carpet event is for Tribeca members as part of the organization’s push into year-round programming. It’s after the festival, which runs June 5-16.
Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go, features the actress and comedian best known for her role as Ava Daniels in the HBO hit Hacks with Jean Smart.
Other new word premieres include sports documentaries Federer: Twelve Final Days, directed by Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia — a behind-the-scenes film of the 20-time Grand Slam tennis champion Roger Federer and his emotional decision to retire from the sport — as well as Power of the Dream,...

While doing press for “Joker,” Todd Phillips talked about why he stopped making comedy movies like “The Hangover” trilogy. The director told Vanity Fair, “Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture,” said Phillips “There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore — I’ll tell you why, because all the fucking funny guys are like, ‘Fuck this shit, because I don’t want to offend you.’”
The quote, which got a great deal of play in the media and social media, ticked off a number of people, including comedy writer and director Bri LeRose, who tweeted, “I will only watch this coward’s joker movie if Vera Drew re-edits it.”
“Bri then Venmo’d me 12 dollars,” said Drew, when she was a guest on an upcoming episode of the Toolkit podcast discussing the origin of her new film “The People’s Joker.” “I’m not saying...

Like so many of the comic-book supervillains that populate it, writer-director Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker arrives with an origin story. An “autobiographical transgender coming-of-age story,” the film stars Drew herself as Joker the Harlequin, an aspiring trans comedian who moves to a dystopic Gotham City and finds herself navigating both her own transition and the world of illicit underground comedy. The characters and settings are largely parodies drawn from DC Comics, but Warner Bros. wasn’t in on the joke, and after the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2022, the studio sent Drew a letter threatening legal action, and all future screenings were canceled.
After a long period of further delays and secret screenings of the film as Drew sought to make sure that she was fully protected from legal action under fair use has allowed for a fully legal release—complete...

Michael Cera’s cream wins the Super Bowl
Unlike the game, where the number of points scored determines a clear champion, it is up for debate about which ad truly “won” the game. But a case could be made for “Barbie” and “Arrested Development” actor Michael Cera’s whacked-out commercial for CeraVe skincare products.
The weirdness began, as so many things do, in the darkest corners of the internet, where, as many as seven years ago some probably very stoned people on Reddit thought it would be funny to connect the actor’s last name to the product. This continued for a while, until, in recent weeks, Cera was seen hanging out in Brooklyn pharmacies, signing tubs of the stuff. (The New York Times later revealed that this was all part of a planned campaign.)
And on Sunday, it all erupted out. The ad, directed by the comic duo of...

Exclusive: Jim Hosking, the award-winning British filmmaker behind idiosyncratic Sundance titles The Greasy Strangler and An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin, has been tapped to direct Gleek, a sports action comedy that has Tim Heidecker and Dave Kneebone of renowned comedy-focused production company Abso Lutely amongst its producers.
Also produced by former Orchard and Idw Entertainment head Paul Davidson (upcoming Electric Dreams remake) and screenwriter Fabian Marquez (Better Luck Tomorrow), who together penned the script, the film tells the story of a hapless young man who discovers that his overactive salivary glands qualify him to compete in a secret, underground competition that holds the key to restoring his family’s good name.

After a fairly quiet last few years (at least since his iconic brief stint in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return), Michael Cera is back in the spotlight. This July he’ll be seen in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and then in August his reunion with writer-director Dustin Guy Defa following Person to Person will arrive in theaters, not to mention upcoming films by Kristoffer Borgli, Eric Wareheim, and Michael Angarano.
The Adults, which premiered at Berlinale earlier this year and will stop by Tribeca, follows Eric (Cera) as he returns home for a short visit and finds himself caught between reuniting with his sisters and chasing a victory with his old poker group. As the trip extends, Eric finds it increasingly difficult to avoid confrontations and revelations as his carefully constructed façade of his adulthood gives way to old childhood conflicts. Did anyone catch that sketch in James Corden's final "Late Late Show" where the unctuous Brit got a farewell from all the late night talk show hosts? Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Myers, and David Letterman all had a grand old time poking fun at Corden and his proclivity for singing and dancing before the host wakes up to find it was all a dream. Funny stuff.
If, like me, you find the whole late night scene a fascinating anachronism in 2023, you're not alone. The great comedian Tim Heidecker loves to skewer the increasingly outdated talk show format whenever he gets a chance. But he and his Abso Lutely productions, which he co-owns with fellow "Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job" star Eric Wareheim, have also gone a step further and provided the perfect salve for anyone overwhelmed by the mediocrity of Carpool Karaoke and pre-prepared talk show anecdotes.

Andrew Callaghan has issued a statement after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct.
Allegations came first from Caroline Elise, who posted a three-minute video on TikTok Jan. 5 where she describes an experience she had with Callaghan in 2021. Before going into the details, she explains that she had “tried to come to [Callaghan] person-to-person and tried to get him to take responsibility for what he did, but his version of what happened the night he assaulted me is so skewed.”
Elise alleges she allowed Callaghan to stay at her house for one night because he’d had a falling out with his crew members and needed somewhere to sleep, but says she was “very clear about the fact that we are not hooking up.”
“I will tell you that he eventually did get consent,” she says. “And that’s the main point, is that he eventually got consent because he wore me down.

Indie filmmaker Andrew Callaghan, known for his man-on-the-street Channel 5 YouTube interviews and HBO documentary “This Place Rules,” has addressed allegations of sexual misconduct that were made against him in early January.
In a statement sent to Variety, Callaghan’s legal representative said, “Andrew is devastated that he is being accused of any type of physical or mental coercion against anyone. Conversations about pressure and consent are extremely important and Andrew wants to have these conversations, so he can continue to learn and grow. While every dynamic is open to interpretation and proper communication is critical from all those involved, repeated requests for money should not be part of these conversations.”
The statement continues, “With that, balanced communication is paramount to any relationship dynamic and Andrew vows to be better in this regard, while reminding his audience that while even one concerned partner is too many, there are always multiple sides to a story.

Andrew Callaghan, the comedian behind A24 and HBO January 6 documentary “This Place Rules,” is facing multiple sexual misconduct allegations after two women came forward this month accusing the internet comedian of pressuring them to have sex.
The “All Gas No Brakes” YouTube channel comic, known for his deadpan lampooning of society on the margins with man-on-the-street style interviews, from QAnoners to Burners and Flat Earthers, has yet to publicly address the allegations. Caroline Elise, the user @cornbreadcasserole on TikTok, alleged that Callaghan asked to spend the night at her place following a falling out with a fellow crewmember. Despite her rebuffs, he “eventually got my consent because he wore me down.” She added, “I said whatever because I was trying to get the whole thing over with…it doesn’t discount that I told him no. [He] still found a way to coerce me into doing things I didn’t want to do.

"You ever feel like you've gone too far down the rabbit hole, man…?" HBO has revealed the official trailer for a documentary film titled This Place Rules, the culmination of years of intense field work by a popular comedian-journalist named Andrew Callaghan, originally from Seattle, Wa. Callaghan makes his feature directorial debut, after becoming a viral sensation online running a new site called Channel 5, interviewing people on the street. This film is about the events leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6th, following all of the intense aspects of America's politics in the few years just before this happened in early 2021. Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim executive produced; Jonah Hill produced, and A24 produced this, which is a clear sign he's got some strong support behind him. I'm hoping Andrew and this film properly skewer the right wing jackasses who participate in this idiotic event, showing us...

Journalism, like all careers, is a rapidly evolving field due to how frequently technology and culture have changed. To truly succeed as a journalist nowadays, you need to present important or relevant stories in a way that captures the audience's attention. Perhaps there is no better example of how to succeed in this than the work of Andrew Callaghan and his YouTube channel, Channel 5. After reaching millions with its on-the-street coverage of both political and social events, Callaghan is ready for the big time thanks to a new documentary being released on HBO later this year.
"This Place Rules," airing on HBO on December 30, 2022, charts the young journalist's shift into more serious political reporting in early 2020. In a new trailer recently released by the cable network, Callaghan is seen attending Covid-19 lockdown protests and Black Lives Matter demonstrations, interviewing both advocates and dissenters. However, things start to get worrisome...

Peacock has unveiled the first trailer for Paul T. Goldman, a wild new comedy series from Borat Subsequent Moviefilm director Jason Woliner and Seth Rogen.
Woliner has been shooting the project for over a decade. It’s in the style of Woliner’s work on Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, a series “that fact and fiction to tell a bizarre and incredible tale.”
Woliner explains how he embarked on the project in a letter that accompanies that show’s announcement. He wrote that Goldman tweeted at him (and hundreds of others) in 2012 that he had written a book and screenplay about “an incredible tale” and was seeking help to bring it to the screen. Woliner ended up buying the book, and ten years later, we have the Peacock series which stars Goldman himself.

Synopsis: Acclaimed for his unfiltered reporting and deadpan humor, Andrew Callaghan brings his gonzo style reporting to HBO to explore the undercurrents that led to the January 6 Capitol Riot. Believe it or not, before Bob Odenkirk became mega-famous as Saul Goodman on "Better Call Saul" or an older, gruffer version of John Wick in "Nobody," he had quite a career in comedy. In fact, the actor, who is gearing up for his new series "Straight Man," won a couple of Emmys for his writing on "Saturday Night Live" and "The Ben Stiller Show." He even influenced arguably a whole generation of comedians with his and David Cross' sketch show "Mr. Show with Bob and David." Two such people were Pennsylvania natives Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim who, as it happens, reached out to the man himself when they were looking to break into the business.
Now better known as Tim and Eric, the pair have become idols of alt-comedy, creating a whole comedic style that would pervade much of popular culture in the wake of their seminal "Tim and Eric Awesome Show,...

Walk Up.“Surprising”: that’s how a character in Hong Sang-soo’s Walk Up describes the decision to hold a film festival in 2022. Filmmaker Byung-soo (Hae-hyo Kwan) has just been invited to attend a complete retrospective of his work overseas, but he and his partner are discussing what this would actually entail: the couple would need to pay her way since the cinematheque can only cover one plane ticket, and Byung-soo would need to quarantine upon returning home to South Korea. The trip would be expensive, “complicated.” They hash it out over greens in a sparsely decorated apartment, boxed into a deeply unglamorous, black-and-white medium shot. Initially, Walk Up left a very light impression on me, but it was on my mind more than most films as I departed TIFF. Byung-soo is a proxy for Hong, and the plainness of his—and Walk Up’s—fatigue with filmmaking is wryly bourgeois,...

The People’s Joker: Comic book satire pulled from TIFF by Warner Bros. due to copyright infringement
In an interesting (although unsurprising) turn of events, a film showcased at only one screening during the Toronto International Film Festival has been pulled Wednesday morning due to rights issues and has had future screenings canceled. The film in question is called The People’s Joker, which uses many references and likenesses to the famous DC villain, The Joker, as well as references and callbacks to past Batman-related movies and properties. The film comes from director, Vera Drew, and is a satire on the comic book character where the Joker’s transformation journey is turned into a transgender journey.
According to That Shelf, the movie was pulled because Warner Bros had apparently served a cease and desist to both TIFF and the filmmakers due to copyright infringement. Vera Drew is no stranger to trippy, plucky humor, having worked with Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! comedians Tim Heidecker and...

Tom Allen (a.k.a. Chad Kroeger) and Jt Parr are taking their comedic activism to Netflix in the newly announced series “Chad & Jt Go Deep.”
The series follows Kroeger and Parr as they take their activism to the streets of Southern California to spread awareness on important issues. However, when one of their causes inadvertently leads to their cancellation, they use their activism to win back the good graces and trust of the culture. “Chad & Jt Go Deep” will premiere Tuesday, August 23.
Kroeger and Parr have made a name for themselves by hitting the streets and attending city council meetings to fight for the real problems in American culture — like the need for a second Independence Day on July 2 to honor the movie “Independence Day.” When the viral duo is not “getting stoked” at City Hall meetings advocating for causes such as the right to party in the state of Delaware,...

After 50 years, George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” finally gets its first official video, and not without a little help from a lot of friends.
In the star-packed effort directed by Lance Bangs and exec produced by Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison with David Zonshine, the new “My Sweet Lord” video stars Fred Armisen and Vanessa Bayer as “metaphysical special agents” searching for something that can’t be seen. With seemingly most of Hollywood and New York celebrities showing up for cameos, the video includes appearances by Darren Criss, Jon Hamm, Rosanna Arquette, Joe Walsh, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Reggie Watts, Moshe Kasher, Natasha Leggero, Patton Oswalt, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, Garfunkel and Oates (Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome), Taika Waititi, Shepard Fairey, Aimee Mullins, Rupert Friend and Harrison’s wife Olivia Harrison and their son Dhani.

If your memories of Aziz Ansari’s Emmy-winning romantic comedy series, “Master of None,” are a little hazy, you’re not alone. In the four years since its last season premiered, there’s been a global pandemic (just in case you forgot), the entire Trump presidency, and an accusation of misconduct against its creator.
The long-awaited follow-up, “Master of None Presents: Moments in Love,” will primarily focus on Dev’s (Ansari) pal Denise (Lena Waithe). Although Ansari is not starring in the project, he did serve as director, co-writer and executive producer.
A statement from Netflix describes the season as, “tethered to the previous seasons while breaking new storytelling ground on its own.” Watch the trailer here.

The first two seasons of Master of None were defined by unpredictability. While the larger arc of each season tended to involve the love life of Dev, a modestly successful actor played by Aziz Ansari — who co-created Master of None with fellow Parks and Rec alum Alan Yang — individual episodes could take place anywhere and be about anyone. One installment might be a black-and-white homage to neorealistic Italian cinema where Dev learns to make pasta, while another might be the story of Dev’s friend Denise (Lena Waithe) gradually coming out to her family.

Waite is returning for Season 3.
The comedy series’ first season premiered in 2015, followed by Season 2 in 2017.
Waithe and Ansari won an Emmy for outstanding comedy writing for the Season 2 episode “Thanksgiving.” Ansari and Yang also shared an Emmy win for writing in its first season.
