Rogue One: A Star Wars Story almost gave fans a different ending, but at some point, changes had to happen to deliver the best treatment of the story. The creative team behind the film always intended to end the film with a bang, and that’s to kill off the entire Rebel team.

In the early days of drafting the script, the writers had a different idea where they concocted an alternate narrative. However, they seemed to fear that Disney might not like it because it might be too dark and gruesome.

Having grown up in a religious family, Christian movie night was something that happened a lot more often than I care to admit. However, back when I was a teenager, my parents showed up one night with an unusually cool-looking DVD of a movie that had been recommended to them by a church leader. Curious to see what new kind of evangelical propaganda my parents had rented this time, I proceeded to watch the film with them expecting a heavy-handed snoozefest.
To my surprise, I was a few minutes in when Denzel Washington proceeded to dismember a band of cannibal raiders when I realized that this was in fact a real movie. My mom was horrified by the flick’s extreme violence and dark subject matter, but I instantly became a fan of the Hughes Brothers’ faith-based 2010 thriller, The Book of Eli. A new "Jurassic World" movie on the way, and it's happening in a hurry. In the span of just a month, we learned that original "Jurassic Park" writer David Koepp has returned to the franchise to pen this mysterious new entry, Universal Pictures is planning to release the film next summer, and they are looking to begin filming in just a few months. Given that we only learned about the movie's existence several weeks ago, it's all pretty surprising. So, who will be shepherding this project through production? None other than Gareth Edwards.
We recently learned that the filmmaker behind franchise films such as 2014's "Godzilla" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will occupy the director's chair. It marks the third time that Edwards will helm an installment in a long-running franchise, which is never an easy task. Yet, both times that he stepped up to the plate, Edwards...

‘Star Wars’ actor John Boyega has joined the cast of ‘The Book of Eli,’ the TV series prequel to the 2010 post-apocalyptic action film which starred Denzel Washington.
Boyega will take on the role of the younger version of Washington’s Eli in the project, which comes from the movie’s writer, Gary Whitta, creator/writer/executive producer of the potential series, and its directors, the Hughes brothers, who executive produce.
Details of the plot are being kept under wraps but it is rumoured to be set 30 years prior to the events in the film, which would put it around the time of the nuclear event or its immediate aftermath.

The movie follows Eli (Washington), a nomad who fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation, 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe caused an ecocide.

Denzel Washington’s 2010 action thriller The Book Of Eli is heading to the small screen, with John Boyega take the lead as a younger Denzel.
Much like Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington has become something of an action hero in the latter stages of his career. While he has previously appeared in films like Ricochet and Crimson Tide, it wasn’t until he played John Creasy in Tony Scott’s brutal 2004 revenge film Man On Fire that we really got to see him off some bad guys in a variety of inventive ways.
Since then of course, he has become synonymous with vigilante justice, dishing out karmic vengeance in three Equalizer films to date. But in 2010, he played a different kind of action hero in The Book Of Eli, a post apocalyptic thriller in which he plays a drifter intent on delivering a sacred book to safety in the West Coast of the United States.

Back in 2010, :a[The Book Of Eli]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/book-eli-review/' } saw Denzel Washington's title character journey across a post-apocalyptic America, dishing out rough justice on cinema screens. Assuming a new prequel series comes together, it'll be John Boyega playing an earlier version of the character.
Deadline reports that the film's writer Gary Whitta has put together the new project alongside directors the Hughes brothers for Alcon Entertainment.
The film's story takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe caused an ecocide. It revolves around Eli, a nomad who fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation.

John Boyega wants to discuss the good book with you. Which book am I talking about? The Book of Eli, of course! Whispers around the watercooler imply that Boyega is prepping a prequel series based on 2010’s The Book of Eli. According to Deadline, Boyega will play a younger version of Eli, the character played by Denzel Washington in the Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes-directed film. Adding authenticity to the project is The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta, who will create/write/executive produce the upcoming prequel series. The Book of Eli prequel series comes from Alcon Entertainment. They’ll bring the show to market to land a premium streaming venue.
In The Book of Eli, a drifter fights across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation. The story takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe resulting in an ecocide.

Alright, who here saw John Boyega on a fast track to stardom after "The Force Awakens" and said something along the lines of, "Boy, he sure seems like the next Denzel Washington?" without knocking on wood first? Because that monkey's paw has started to curl something fierce and left us with the latest batch of franchise IP news -- one that'll excite the more innocent among us while leaving the rest slightly jaded and cynical. What a time to be alive, folks.
So, remember when the Hughes brothers teamed up with "Rogue One" writer Gary Whitta on a 2010 apocalyptic movie by the name of "The Book of Eli" and we all agreed that it was a pretty solid piece of original genre work with something meaningful on its mind? That might feel like more and more of a foreign concept these days, especially compared to the current state of original sci-fi.

The post-apocalyptic movie The Book of Eli starred Denzel Washington back in 2010, and Deadline reports today that John Boyega (Attack the Block) is on board to both star in and executive produce a prequel series package that’s being presented to “select premium buyers.”
Boyega would play a young version of Denzel’s character from the movie.
Gary Whitta, who wrote The Book of Eli, is on board the planned project. The 2010 movie was directed by The Hughes Brothers, who are also attached to executive produce the series.
Deadline reminds, “The neo-Western Book Of Eli movie takes place thirty years after a nuclear catastrophe. It revolves around Eli, a nomad who fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation.”
The site also notes, “Details about the TV series are sketchy but I hear it is set 30 years...

Director Nick Castle’s 1984 sci-fi film The Last Starfighter is one of the most revered cult classics of the 1980s, so it has been no surprise to hear that the film’s screenwriter Jonathan R. Betuel is eager to revive the property is some way. Eight years ago, it was announced that Betuel was working on a spin-off TV series called The Starfighter Chronicles, which would focus on alien law enforcement. That project has never made it into production. Five years ago, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story writer Gary Whitta revealed that he was working with Betuel on a reboot called The Last Starfighters. That one even got a sizzle reel, but still didn’t make it into production. Now, during an interview with Gizmodo, actor Wyatt Russell revealed that he’d love to see a remake of The Last Starfighter.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is perhaps the most maddening of Disney’s Star Wars films.
There’s so much potential that made it onto the screen, and also so much that stumbles along the way. The film is gorgeously shot by Dune cinematographer Greig Fraser. The ending is emotional and shocking. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his robot sidekick K-2So (Alan Tudyk) remain enduring. Yet the film is burdened by a soggy midsection and a listless lead character in Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), among other issues (or perhaps not — debating what, exactly, is right and wrong with Rogue One is part of its ongoing fandom legacy).
Star Wars fans have long wondered if perhaps a better edit might someday be released given how much footage was shot for the film that did not make it into the final cut. The production famously was directed by Gareth Edwards,...

"Andor" just wrapped up so it's only fitting that "Rogue One" screenwriter Gary Whitta took the opportunity to reveal the rather cool "Star Wars" television show he cooked up with his "Rogue One" co-writer Chris Weitz. His pitch was to set a show between "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens" that would see the successful Rebel Alliance putting together a Mossad-style team to hunt down Imperial war criminals. Picture "Munich" but in the "Star Wars" Universe.
Years ago my Rogue One co-writer Chris Weitz and I had a cool idea for a TV show about a Mossad-style Rebel team hunting down Imperial war criminals who fled and disappeared after the fall of the Empire. Could have been a cool bookend to R1. We never did anything with it though.

Kevin Sorbo claims he recently made “a scene in public” by refusing to put on a mask at a coffee shop. It isn’t clear if this actually happened, but it is true that Sorbo caused another scene… on Twitter.
Sorbo, who it must be said did not provide photographic or video evidence of the event, said on Tuesday that during a recent visit to Starbucks in Los Angeles, the staff asked him to put on a mask. That would be because Los Angeles County recently brought back indoor mask mandates as Covid-19 cases rise.
Here’s how the “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” actor described what happened next. “I’m not proud of this but i just made a scene in public for the first time in my life. I walked into Starbucks and they asked me to put a mask on. I yelled this is Bs. I turned around and walked out.

"You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier." Hollywood screenwriter Gary Whitta has revealed a special pitch trailer "sizzle reel" that they created for The Last Starfigher sequel already in development (tentatively) called The Last Starfighters. This trailer features concept art with a score and a tiny bit of dialogue from the original shown at the end. Whitta originally dropped some of the concept on Twitter back in 2018, so we've seen most of this stuff before, but there are a few new images added in this trailer. Plus it's just thrilling to see all the art (by Matt Allsopp) with the music (by Chris Tilton & Craig Safan). Whitta was developing this project with Jonathan Betuel, the same screenwriter on the original cult classic 1984 sci-fi film. The concept for this sequel is said to involve Alex returning again, but no exact plot details have ever been revealed.

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to star in the World War II film “War Magician,” with “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow attached to direct.
Though Cumberbatch has flexed his magic skills as Marvel’s Doctor Strange, this next film will cast him as a British soldier who uses his skills as an illusionist to fight in World War II. “War Magician” is based on a book by David Fisher and is based on the real life story of Jasper Maskelyne, who was a world famous magician in the 1930s but is best known today for his work in the war, where he claimed to create large scale ruses, camouflage and deception as a means of defeating the Nazis.
The book in particular shows how he managed to “hide” the Suez Canal from German bombers or made fake portable craters — or “bomb holes” — to make the enemy think they hit their target.

To quote indie rock legends The Mountain Goats, 2020’s mantra seems to be “I’m going to make it through this year if it kills me.” We will all collectively breathe a sigh of relief once New Year’s Day hits, and a side effect of wanting the calendar to change is the desire to just get the holidays over with as soon as possible. Reality being what it currently is, most of us can’t (nor should we) see our friends and family right now. But that doesn’t mean we have to humbug our way through the next month. Small seasonal commemorations, even if it is just you and a tree straight out of A Charlie Brown Christmas, will be the norm this Yuletide. And that’s not ideal, but it’s okay given our circumstances.

Screenwriter Gary Whitta ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story") and Jonathan Betuel continue developing a reboot/sequel to "The Last Starfighter" (1984):
"'Alex Rogan' lives in a trailer park with his mother and younger brother. He also works as the trailer park's handyman.
"He often plays the space-battle arcade game 'Starfighter', as defender of 'the Frontier' from 'Xur' and the 'Ko-Dan Armada'...
"...becoming the game's highest-scoring player.
"Approached by the alien 'Centauri', the game's inventor, Alex accepts a ride in a car that becomes a spacecraft, traveling to the planet 'Rylos', while the android duplicate 'Beta' takes Alex' place during his absence..."
"Right now we have a fully developed story that is a combination of reboot and sequel that we both think honors the legacy of the original film," said Whitta, "while passing the torch to a new generation".

After spending decades in the planning stages, a sequel to 1984’s cult sci-fi classic The Last Starfighter is finally throwing off the shackles imposed by endless rights issues and studio problems.
In a new interview with Moviehole, the film’s co-writer, Jonathan R. Betuel, has offered an update on the status of The Last Starfighter 2, which he has been plotting for quite a while with Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels scribe Gary Whitta.
Whitta has previously described the project as “a combination of reboot and sequel that we both think honors the legacy of the original film while passing the torch to a new generation” and plans are still very much in motion to see the movie come to fruition.
“It looks like we’ll be making the deal to get it going,” Betuel confirmed. “Gary’s a gifted collaborator, we’ll be writing the script together but it’s taken a long time.

The Metal Gear Solid movie has now been in development for 15 years. Over that time, the video game franchise has come to an end, with creator Hideo Kojima leaving developer Konami to make bizarro hit Death Stranding. As such, it sounds like it’s been an uphill battle for director Jordan Vogt-Roberts to get the green light, despite his inexhaustible passion for the property.
It seems that for the moment, plans for a big screen adventure are on ice. But the dream isn’t dead. In an interview on Rogue One writer Gary Whitta’s Animal Talking show, Vogt-Roberts explained that he’s pursuing other options, revealing that he’s “trying to get an animated series going that brings back David Hayter, that brings back the original voice cast, and doing that in tandem [with the movie].”

While a lot of Star Wars fans only concern themselves with the movies and The Mandalorian – though the animated shows also have a strong following – the franchise’s expanded universe is a whole lot bigger than that. Although not everything is considered canon, there are still countless video games, comic books and novels that take place in a galaxy far, far away that delve much deeper into the mythology originally created by George Lucas.
One of these more recent endeavors is the From a Certain Point of View collection, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of A New Hope by having 40 different writers all pen a short story that told the events of the movie from the perspective of a background character. The Star Wars fanbase is arguably more disenfranchised during the Disney era than they’ve ever been, with Lucasfilm under constant criticism for their handling of the beloved sci-fi series, which isn’t exactly surprising given the constant reports of behind the scenes turmoil that have resulted in major delays for several projects, and that’s without even mentioning the wildly polarizing reactions to both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
However, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are doing a great job with The Mandalorian to get them back onside, with the enthusiastic response to the first season leading to some huge casting news for the upcoming sophomore run of episodes. Not only is Ahsoka Tano set to make her long-awaited live-action debut, but Katee Sackhoff will also be reprising her animated role as Bo-Katan, while the internet went wild for the announcement that Boba Fett would also...

Anyone who watched Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was likely shocked at its ending when all of the film’s main characters die in an explosion after stealing the Death Star schematics. It was a bold move that felt very different than other entries in a franchise known for having hopeful, uplifting conclusions. Even more surprising is to realize that Disney had to sign off on allowing all of the heroes in the film to die in its finale – something most of us wouldn’t expect from the family-friendly company.
But Rogue One‘s ending wasn’t always so gloomy. During a Q&a discussion with CineFix and IGN, writers Chris Weitz and Gary Whitta shared some unexpected news about earlier drafts of the script. Though the writers had previously envisioned the cast dying at the end, the decision to avoid any human main character deaths in prior versions...

With the Coronavirus pandemic showing no signs of coming to an end anytime soon, governments around the world are following suit in locking down all non-essential businesses, with only the likes of supermarkets and pharmacies remaining open for, well, obvious reasons. Us chain GameStop, however, believes it has every right to remain open during the outbreak, with the retailer considering itself an “essential” service.

Few films in the Star Wars saga mined its past as readily as Rogue One did, a spinoff/prequel/multi-million dollar retcon that reintroduced iconic characters in unexpected ways. So, you may not be entirely surprised to learn there was one more familiar face billed for an appearance before circumstances dictated otherwise.
Early on in its production, screenwriter Gary Whitta was signed up to script Rogue One. In his draft, he planned to bring back Admiral Ackbar, last seen in Return of the Jedi, for the film’s climactic final act. But as he explains on Twitter, another Star Wars director beat him to the punch:

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is arguably the best of the new Star Wars movies. One of the main reasons is the inclusion of the iconic villain, Darth Vader. While he only appears in two scenes in the film, the second is a full-on Rebel massacre where Vader eviscerates folks left and right to reacquire plans to the Death Star.
It’s perhaps the best scene in the spinoff, but according to screenwriter Gary Whitta, the original plan would have included a higher Rebel body count and a beach location.
Rebel ground troops bunkered in around the Imperial comms tower on Scarif, stormtroopers can’t break through to get to Jyn who’s on her way to transmit plans. Vader says “put me on that beach.” Carnage ensues. You ended up seeing something like that in the corridor scene though. https://t.co/vvQKGPSgDr
