Jeffrey Dean Morgan played Edward Blake aka The Comedian in Zack Snyder’s 2009 film Watchmen. It was this lesser-known DC property that launched Snyder’s career into one of the fan-favorite Cbm directors. Morgan only had great things to say about the film, which he shared was ahead of its time. Morgan was sure that the series created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons would be loved forever by fans.

Louis Gossett Jr., who was one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, passed away on March 29, 2024. The veteran actor was the first Black actor to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1982 for his role as drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in the film An Officer and a Gentleman.
Though the star still has a few more releases on the horizon, including John Krasinski’s If, one of the actor’s final TV appearances was the HBO show Watchmen. The series was lauded for reinventing the original comics and portraying the infamous Tulsa Massacre of 1921. Despite positive acclaim, the series was reclassified as a limited series, which reportedly hurt the veteran star.

Regina King starred in 2019’s Watchmen, an HBO limited series serving as a television continuation to the original DC comic series created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. While the show embodied the essence of its source material, it forged its own path in storytelling—one met with both criticism and acclaim.

Watchmen was praised extensively for handling racial prejudices, terror, and intergenerational trauma with a nuanced take on the subject matter. However, among a particular group of fans of the original comics, it proved divisive, as reflected by the audience score it boasts on Rotten Tomatoes.
When King stepped into play the role of Angela Abar, it apparently was challenging to get some of her friends on board with the idea, and the underlying theme of this heartbreaking reluctance stemmed from the intrinsic nature of the show—including its political allegories.

Superstitious and cowardly, a criminal just watched Batman take down two of her armed and powerful comrades. Desperation drives her to take the one option left to her, the sole chance she has to escape the Batman’s wrath. Pointing a gun at the 10-month-old baby she and her colleagues kidnapped, the criminal shouts, “Back off, man! I’ll kill the kid.” When Batman does not respond, she yells louder, fearing that the Dark Knight doesn’t take her seriously. “Believe me man, I will! Believe me–”
Bearing the weapon he took from another criminal, Batman shoots the criminal, killing her instantly. He grabs the toddler before he can hit the ground and nestles the boy safely against his chest. “I believe you,” Batman intones.
It should come as no surprise that the above scene from The Dark Knight Returns means a lot to director Zack Snyder. After all, he...

While the Marvel Universe continues to chug along and James Gunn attempts to resuscitate the DC universe into something worth watching, we will yet again go back to the world of graphic novels for our inspiration on book vs movie. It’s really a very untapped realm as there are so many good horror comics out there, many without adaptations yet. The ones that have been adapted are very fun and interesting. Today is the mostly forgotten early 2000s movie From Hell (watch it Here), which is based on the stunning and epic graphic novel from famed wizard and all-around cranky dude Alan Moore. Like many graphic novels, the journey to page and then screen was a long and arduous one. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack the Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them along with...

HBO’s Watchmen isn’t the first screen adaptation of DC Comics’ critically acclaimed graphics novel of the same title. But it’s widely considered the best addition to the franchise that began with a creative team of English writers—Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins. Zack Snyder’s 2009 film adaptation was a decent interpretation of the comic book limited series praised for deconstructing the superhero genre. However, Damon Lindelof’s take on the classic tale has enjoyed more applause from fans and critics. The Lindelof-helmed superhero drama premiered on October 20, 2019, and ran for only nine episodes, which concluded on December 15,...

We don't always talk enough about visual effects when we talk about the components that make up a great film or television series. Quality writing, acting, cinematography, and production design are essential and mutually complementary, of course. But the realm of VFX is equally crucial in the way that it simultaneously informs and is informed by those other disciplines, often constituting the key ingredient that allows a scene or a shot to accomplish its goal -- whether that goal is steeped in authenticity, scariness, wonder, tension, or surrealism.
In that sense, comparing the before and after of shots featuring computer generated imagery (CGI) and effects can be highly instructional. Thanks to the showcase reels released by many VFX studios and behind-the-scenes featurettes, it's possible to get a side-by-side glimpse at what several great TV shows look like prior to the addition of digital effects. The comparisons are sometimes amusing, sometimes revelatory,...

First up, there’s the new Matthew Vaughn spy action-comedy “Argylle,” based on a recently released book by one Elly Conway, presumed to be a pseudonym for another famous author, who sold the rights to Vaughn to make this movie even before the book’s release just a few weeks back.
Going by the trailer, there’s a bit of a mystery in the book and movie surrounding the identity of the film’s titular secret agent, but Vaughn has another stacked cast, including Bryce Dallas Howard as “Conway” with Henry Cavill playing “Argylle,” and the likes of Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Sofia Boutella and even pop star Dua Lipa. The...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
Listen, I love anime and the endless possibilities of the medium. Unfortunately, much like how Hollywood is mostly inundated by uncomplicated four-quadrant blockbusters that get tiring after a while, anime, too, is inundated with uncomplicated action-centric titles that cater to a mass audience. There's a reason the vast majority of anime shows are about teenagers, which is fine but it means that anytime a show comes out that deals with adult characters and mature themes it is worth paying attention to.
So imagine how thrilled I was to find out that there was an anime adaptation of a manga by the guy who gave us the anime equivalent of an HBO prestige drama — and it is based on a story by the man who created anime as we know it.
That anime is "Pluto.

For nearly a decade, audiences have been entertained by the secret organization known as The Kingsman in director Matthew Vaughn's series of spy movies that began in 2014 with "Kingsman: The Secret Service." Based on writer Mark Millar and artist Dave Gibbons Millarworld comic book series of the same name, Vaughn's movie adaptation was a big hit that spawned a franchise that has, to date, produced three movies — and more could be on the way.
Be it "Kingsman 3," another prequel film, a spin-off of some sort, or even a TV show, Vaughn seems intent on keeping this universe alive. But for those looking to catch up — or perhaps revisit — the series to date, we're here to go over the correct order to watch the movies in the franchise that have already been released. Zack Snyder may have his hands full launching Rebel Moon, his sci-fi fantasy film that Netflix unveils Dec. 22, but that doesn’t mean the energetic filmmaker isn’t busy developing other projects.
Enter Blood and Ashes. The film began life as a sequel to 300 and 300: Rise of an Empire, and was one of the last projects Snyder worked on before officially leaving Warner Bros. after the debacle that was Justice League. But what he turned in was quite different from a 300 sequel.
Blood and Ashes, which he partially wrote while shooting Army of the Dead for Netflix in 2019, ended up focusing on the relationship between Alexander the Great and his second in command, Haphaestion. It was a gay love story that was also an ancient Greek war epic, one he said then-Warners executive Courtenay Valenti liked and championed.

On December 6, the 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.
While Cord Jefferson had found much success as a TV writer on celebrated series like “Watchmen,” “The Good Place,” and “Succession,” his directorial debut “American Fiction” was borne of a time in which he felt adrift, unsure of if he was capable of anything more.
“I cried when they greenlit this movie,” the director told IndieWire. “I had faced so much rejection in television. I’d sold a number of TV shows, and developed a number of TV shows, and somewhere along the line of those shows, they were killed.”

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who: The Star Beast.
The first of the new David Tennant and Catherine Tate-fronted episodes is called simply “The Star Beast”, a title it shares with the 1980 Doctor Who Weekly comic strip (published in the US by Marvel Comics as “Stan Lee Presents: Doctor Who”) “Doctor Who and the Star Beast”, featuring the Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Baker.
The TV special stars Miriam Margolyes as the voice of the fluffy alien “Beep the Meep”, who first appeared in that comic. And if we put the poster for the special alongside the cover of that comic (see above) there are… similarities.
It wouldn’t be the first time the Doctor Who TV series has adapted stories from other mediums. The most famous example would be when Paul Cornell was invited to adapt the Seventh Doctor novel he had written for Virgin New Adventures,...

Osamu Tezuka's "Astro Boy" birthed manga, and in turn, anime, as we know these mediums today. Manga author Naoki Urasawa has said that the "Astro Boy" arc "The Greatest Robot on Earth" was the first comic he ever read. Enter "Pluto," Urasawa's reimagining of that story, now adapted itself into an anime mini-series distributed by Netflix.

At a time when the James Bond franchise had never been more serious and solemn, in came Matthew Vaughn with the "Kingsman" films.
Based (loosely) on the titular comic book series created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, Vaughn's first two "Kingsman" movies, "The Secret Service" and "The Golden Circle," are aggressively irreverent in their riff on the super-spy tropes popularized by Bond. These films are full of cartoonish hyper-violence and crass humor, from a blood-splattered single-take shoot-out in a church to one of the films' heroes sneakily planting a tracking device in someone's nether regions mid-coitus. Is it any wonder that Vaughn's prequel film "The King's Man," which he's admitted was his attempt at a stark depiction of WWI trench warfare on the level with "1917," proved to be one of the most tonally bizarre blockbusters put to celluloid in recent memory?

Hollywood had tried to get Watchmen to the big screen for decades, but the acclaimed graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons proved notoriously difficult to adapt. After years in development hell and a revolving door of directors, Zack Snyder successfully brought Watchmen to life. Despite its passionate fan base, Watchmen was polarizing and under-performed at the box office, leading Patrick Wilson to wonder if audiences weren’t ready for it.
Patrick Wilson recently spoke with CinemaBlend about Insidious: The Red Door and touched upon Watchmen, which he said is the only movie of his that he’s watched “front to back” since it debuted. “I wanted to look at it as an older guy, as a filmmaker,” Wilson said. “I knew Zack was ahead of the curve, y’know, it’s weird to say that audiences weren’t ready for it, but you need a movie like that.

Medusa is getting a modern makeover.
Nicole Kassell, who an Emmy for her work directing episodes of HBO’s Watchmen, is set to direct Medusa, an action adventure project centered on the Greek mythological character that is in development at Amazon Studios.
Nicole Perlman, known for her Marvel Studios work, penned the script that reimagines what audiences may know about everybody’s favorite Gorgon, who has snakes for hair and whose stare turns ordinary people into stone.
Plot details are being kept behind the mirror but the fantasy story sees Medusa, after running afoul of the ancient gods, setting out on an epic quest to save the world.
Vinson Films’ Tripp Vinson and Tara Farney are producing alongside Kassell. Vinson Films, which was behind the cult horror movie Ready or Not and Netflix’s hit Murder Mystery, is prepping for the debut of the latter’s sequel March 31.
Perlman will executive produce.

HBO’s 2019 “Watchmen” series ranks among the prestige network’s most acclaimed works, winning 11 Primetime Emmys and ranking at No. 3 on IndieWire’s list of the 21st century’s best limited series. But creator Damon Lindelof has since not shown interest in helming a followup to that first season — and without Lindelof on board, it doesn’t seem like HBO will ever greenlight another season.
“‘Watchmen’ was so much his creation,” HBO content CEO Casey Bloys told Variety in a new cover story. “If he doesn’t think there’s a story that he wants to put his heart and soul into, it’s hard for me to think that it would be worth doing. It was a very special limited series for us. I would put it in the pantheon of HBO greats. If Damon ever wants to revisit it, he knows that it’s an open door. But...

This post contains spoilers for the first four episodes of "The Last of Us."
In today's arts and entertainment landscape, it seems that all bets are off when it comes to defining a work and its intentions: the terms "remake," "adaptation," "reboot," "reimagining," "rebootquel" and more are tossed around willy-nilly, with new descriptors being Frankensteined together every year. It's a reaction to the rampant increase of stories being told, retold, and revisited as Hollywood and its ilk seek to minimize risk by exploiting material they believe to be pre-sold. It's a real catch-22, to make something old seem new again.
HBO's "The Last of Us" series is being touted as an adaptation, and on the face of it this appears to be the correct term, given that the story first appeared in one medium (video games) and is now moving to another (live-action television). Yet, in execution, it's not so cut and dried.

HBO is officially 50 years old, and we're celebrating the incredible entertainment the still-thriving network provided along the way.
It's hard to imagine that TV once featured a landscape without HBO, considering its impact on the television landscape. HBO boasts some of the best talents in television; this can be seen in the number of awards they have been nominated for and won throughout the years.
They have delivered many iconic TV shows with significant cultural impact. Their one-time slogan of "It's not TV, it's HBO" said it all, and their success can be attributed to delivering a solid roster of well-written, acted and produced shows.
We have compiled a list in reverse alphabetical order of 50 of the network's best shows that everyone should watch in their lifetime. It can be a starting point when deciding the next thing to watch or gathering knowledge in the case of an HBO trivia event coming your way.

When a lonely fraud information worker loses the tool he relies on the most, he goes back in time to prevent his loss. Sascha Vernik’s animated short Losing It is a vivid and pulpy sci-fi puzzle box that tracks one man’s descent into chaos. The joy of Vernik’s film comes in its unpredictability as you can’t quite foretell where he’ll take you or what he’ll show you from scene to scene. Visually, the film slightly recalls the work of Watchmen Illustrator Dave Gibbons in how he bridges the splendour of science fiction with a world that feels downbeat and bleak. Dn is delighted to premiere Losing It on our pages and is joined by Vernik below for a conversation where he talks us through the project’s lengthy gestation period, the process of manifesting his dynamic visual style, and the joy of working with voice actors.

Doctor Who was filled with surprises this year. First was the announcement that Russell T. Davies, the man most responsible for bringing Doctor Who back to television in 2005, would be returning as showrunner. Then came the special “The Power of the Doctor,” which saw Jodie Whittaker regenerate not into Ncuti Gatwa, slated to play the next Doctor, but into former Doctor David Tennant, who will star in a 60th Anniversary three-parter next November.
Joining Tennant will be his third companion Donna Noble, played again by Catherine Tate. But the first teaser for the upcoming episodes hints at the return of even more unlikely characters from the Time Lord’s past.
The teaser highlights the expected fallout of the Doctor’s regeneration, as Tennant plays a confused Fourteenth Doctor battling aliens and Gatwa’s soon-to-be Fifteenth Doctor asks just what the hell is going on here. Before Gatwa’s arrival, Tennant...

Alan Moore has hit out at the HBO adaptation of Watchmen, describing it as “embarrassing” to him.
The 2019 series, created by Lost’s Damon Lindelof, loosely adapted and sequelised Moore’s seminal comic book.
According to Moore, the series showrunner sent him a letter when HBO’s Watchmen was in development.
The letter supposedly began: “Dear Mr Moore, I am one of the bastards currently destroying Watchmen.”
“That wasn’t the best opener,” Moore said, in a new interview with GQ. “It went on through a lot of, what seemed to me to be, neurotic rambling. ‘Can you at least tell us how to pronounce “Ozymandias”?’
“I got back with a very abrupt and probably hostile reply telling him that I’d thought that Warner Bros were aware that they, nor any of their employees, shouldn’t contact me again for any reason.

At TCA in 2019, showrunner Damon Lindelof fielded a lot of questions about his upcoming Watchmen series for HBO. Specifically, he was asked about how the small screen project may or may not connect to the classic comic series of the same name, which ran over 12 issues run from 1986-87.
“We are not going to mess with it, it’s canon,” he declared.
However, Lindelof did admit his relationship with the comic’s notoriously prickly and private co-creator, Alan Moore, was predictably rocky. He did not elaborate at length about his interactions with Moore, who long-ago-announced his intention to have nothing to do with adaptations of his work. In keeping with that, Moore was not mentioned in any of HBO’s press materials for the series, with only Dave Gibbons noted as co-creator.
Today in an interview with GQ, however, Moore described his interactions with Lindelof. Per the Watchmen co-creator, Lindelof...

Zack Snyder’s Watchman was relatively well-received by fans and overall was a box office success. Devoted to making a faithful adaptation of the Alan Moore/ Dave Gibbons graphic novel, the fact that Snyder’s Watchmen film got made on the scale it did is a miracle. However, several other versions of Watchmen were in the works before Snyder got involved, with several coming close to being made. In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Unmade Movie, we dig into versions that almost got made involving folks such as Terry Gilliam, David Hayter (who filmed a demo reel with Ray Stevenson and Rorschach and Iain Glen as Nite Owl), Darren Aronofsky and Paul Greengrass. Suppose any of these versions had gotten made. In that case, we might have gotten someone like Paddy Considine as Rorschach, Joaquin Phoenix as Nite Owl, and possibly even Tom Cruise as Ozymandias (in which...

Warning: contains potential spoilers for the 60th Anniversary Special
In June 2022, photos from location filming in Cardiff yielded some images of creatures that will appear (barring a hilarious amount of misdirection) during Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary. If you don’t want to know any more, stop reading now.
In the Summer 2022 issue of Doctor Who Magazine Russell T. Davies, showrunner and writer for the anniversary, commented: “Some monsters might be glimpsed. Monsters which might well be familiar to readers of Dwm. Well, familiar, but new. Whatever that means.”
This appears to confirms the appearance of Beep the Meep and the Wrarth Warriors who originally featured in a Doctor Who Weekly comic strip in 1980.
Given recent #DoctorWho location filming for the 60th, it seems we’ll be getting some returning niche monsters from ‘80s comics – Wrarth Warriors & #beepthemeep! Thoughts?...

Feel a movement in the force? That sense may come from new rumors about a development in the Star Wars universe. According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, Damon Lindelof may be working on a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm. Now, Sneider is quick to clarify that this is very much speculation at this point, as no rep has yet confirmed or denied the rumor. But in his newsletter The Ankler, Sneider lays out a compelling case for considering Lindelof as a potential writer, linking to a 2020 Fandom interview in which the writer admits that he’d like to try a Disney tentpole. As those who follow Lindelof on Instagram may already know: he is quite the Star Wars fan already.
Whether this news counts as a great disturbance or a new hope for Star Wars fans is a matter of debate. No one doubts Lindelof’s commitment to science fiction,...

Once upon a time, Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons produced a cheeky series called The Secret Service, which got turned into a fun film called Kingsman. While the comics remain fun reads, the film series has deteriorated when left entirely in Matthew Vaughn’s hands. He’s good filmmaker as witnessed by Kingsman and the underrated Stardust. But, the tone and satire of the spy genre that infused the comic is missing, especially from the prequel installment The King’s Man.
Out now from 20th Century Home Entertainment, the film failed to engage audiences when it was released during the holiday and has appeared on streaming and disc in rapid fashion. What this portends for the series remains classified.

Famous names — both historically and cast-wise — abound in the early 1900s set prequel “The King’s Man.” Adapted from the popular comic book series “Kingsman: The Secret Service” by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, the film is an R-rated prequel to the two previous “Kingsman” films, 2014’s “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and 2017’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.”
Set in the early twentieth century, the film draws some parallels to Marvel’s Avengers, as a group of good guys gather to diffuse evil schemes of an opposing tyrant group.

There was a time, long before "Justice League" when Zack Snyder's big ensemble comic book movie was "Watchmen," his 2009 film based on the classic graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. A gritty deconstruction of the superhero genre, "Watchmen" tears apart what it means to be an all-American superhero. And in its famous title sequence, there's a nod towards one of DC's most iconic heroes — Batman.
The title sequence has become something of a specialty for Zack Snyder. "Watchmen" is one of his greatest examples, depicting snapshots of an alternate American history from the 1940s to the late 80s. We see the rise of...

Inspired by the comic book series "The Secret Service" by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, and serving as a prequel to 2014's "Kingsman: The Secret Service" and 2017's "Kingsman: The Golden Circle," Matthew Vaughn's "The King's Man" is an odd amalgamation of cartoonish violence and somber melodrama. Set decades before the events of the first two films, "The King's Man" centers on several events during World War I and the establishment of the Kingsman agency.
