The Season 1 finale of Shantaram will now be its series finale: Apple TV+ has canceled the Charlie Hunnam drama. The news of Shantaram’s demise hit Deadline on Thursday, December 15, the day before the season finale started streaming. Based on the bestselling 2003 novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts, Shantaram starred Hunnam as Lin Ford, an escaped convict who starts working as a medical for the poor and neglected in 1980s Bombay and “finds unexpected love, connection, and courage on the long road to redemption.” That road brings Lin into contact with an “enigmatic and intriguing” woman named Karla, played by Antonia Desplat. “[He’s on a] collision course between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of gold,” Hunnam told TV Insider in October. “With Karla, it’s non-reciprocated initially, but a dramatic, wonderfully romantic relationship blossoms. He gets tempted by the Bombay underworld.” As Deadline reports, the series — which also...

Just prior to the season finale episode, which will be released tonight on AppleTV+, the show Shantaram starring Charlie Hunnam has been axed by the streaming service. Stantaram is based on the lengthy 900-plus page novel by Gregory David Roberts and had a huge production with the ambitious, epic scope of shooting across two continents. Both of which had been impacted by the Covid pandemic.
The series started filming its first season, but production came to a pause in February 2020 when the pandemic was taking shape. Since the show filmed in multiple countries, production was not able to resume until May 2021 for the remaining ten episodes of the season. Deadline reports that the show hadn’t quite taken off as much as the streaming service’s more popular titles, such as The Morning Show and Ted Lasso.

Introducing Charlie Hunnam, the screenwriter.
“I’m trying to pivot basically full-time after Shantaram into becoming a writer,” he told The Hollywood Reporter recently, referencing the Apple TV+ series he toplines based on the Gregory David Roberts epic novel.
There’s one caveat: “I’m by no means going to stop acting but I’m going to try and only act in things that I write.”

Johnny Depp was riding high on his “Pirates of the Caribbean” success when another “nearly perfect” project began to wither on the vine.
It was 2007, and all 12,000 Hollywood film and TV writers were on strike.
Among other big movies he had in the pipeline, Depp was attached to star in “Shantaram,” about a former bank-robbing heroin addict who escapes an Australian prison and lands in India, where he struggles to begin an anonymous life in the urban chaos of 1980s Bombay.
Warner Bros. had bought the rights to the internationally bestselling novel of the same name in 2004, a year after it was published. The author, Gregory David Roberts, had written a screenplay.

Episode 2. Charlie Hunnam in “Shantaram,” premiering October 14, 2022 on Apple TV+. Courtesy of Apple TV+
“Shantaram” is an intense thriller series, filmed in Bhopal, India, but set in Mumbai back when it was called Bombay. It offers a gritty look at poverty, corruption and organized crime that many will find will be hard to get into, but well worth the effort. In Season One, protagonist Lin Ford (Charlie Hunnam) is on the lam from Australia for something we won’t learn about for a while. Upon arrival in India, he’s mugged and wakes up in one of Bombay’s poorest sections, luckily surrounded by kind-hearted locals. Without money or a passport, Lin makes himself useful to the community by using medical knowledge he’d acquired in an impoverished area lacking other access to treatment.
The time period isn’t specified but some references and the state of technology make it seem vaguely in the 1980s,...

In the opening moments of the new Apple Plus series Shantaram, Charlie Hunnam breaks out of prison the fast way. Not for him chipping away at a dank tunnel for 17 years like Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption. He’s over the front wall and away before the guards in the machine gun towers even turn their heads. It’s an audacious, brazen escape, and at one o’clock on a July afternoon in 1980, it’s exactly how convicted bank robber Gregory David Roberts broke out of Melbourne’s Pentridge Prison. “If you’re planning an escape, you look for the place that’s least protected,” explains Roberts, now 70, at home in Jamaica. “They thought no one would be crazy enough to escape over the front wall.”

Review: Since its publication in 2003, Shantaram has been in various states of development with everyone from Johnny Depp and Peter Weir to Mira Nair and Joel Egerton involved. Repurposed from a feature film to a series in 2018 by Apple as one of their first international productions. Led by Charlie Hunnam in his first series role since the end of Sons of Anarchy, Shantaram has gone through a few showrunners and the Covid-19 pandemic before finally making it to screens this month.

“Bombay felt exhilaratingly free, a place where everyone started new.” That’s Lin Ford, played by Charlie Hunnam, speaking to us in voice-over about the city where he hopes to begin again. Today known as Mumbai, the Indian metropolis is many things; on “Shantaram,” it’s the staging ground for a white fugitive to lose and find himself. It’s that dynamic that tends to frustrate over the course of a long season.
Based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, “Shantaram” is set in the 1980s, in the wake of Lin’s prison break. Making his way out of an Australian penal institution in the pilot episode, Lin, a recovering heroin addict, seeks to disappear into a city of millions before, potentially, moving on, but is perpetually drawn toward an intriguing, possibly amoral woman named Karla (Antonia Desplat). Charlie Hunnam‘s toying with the idea of life after death when it comes to the dangerously smart character he played in all seven seasons of “Sons of Anarchy”.

He recently said as much, and he acknowledged that speaking about it caused quite the commotion.
“Oh, did that get a little bit of traction,” quipped Hunnam. But when pressed on whether there’s a concrete idea or if reprising his role as Jax will come in a series or film, Hunnam played coy.
“I can’t, I can’t tell you. No, no,” said Hunnam with a bit of a grin on his face. “There’s nothing I can say at all,...

Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content’s search for a second showrunner to work on the Apple TV+ drama Shantaram has taken on added urgency following the exit of the creator/showrunner Eric Warren Singer.
The producers called a halt to the production of the 10-part drama based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts after Justin Kurzel directed the first two episodes last year.
Filming was due to resume on Monday but the producers decided they would not be ready to shoot before the monsoon season in India while they looked to hire a second showrunner, who is yet to be appointed and will take the reins solo.

The producers, Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content, called a temporary halt while they aim to hire a second showrunner to work alongside writer/showrunner Eric Warren Singer.
This will give Singer, a first-time showrunner whose writing credits include the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, American Hustle and Only the Brave, more time to complete the scripts.
Shooting of the first two episodes wrapped just before Christmas and filming was due to resume today. Production in Australia and India will resume after a second showrunner is on board.
Kurzel is contracted to direct a total of five episodes. There is no word yet on whether additional helmers have been hired.

The Hollywood studios and other international producers that were hoping to take advantage of the Federal Government’s $140 million Location Incentive Program over the next few years may well be disappointed.
The fund runs until June 30 2023 – but only $18 million remains to be allocated. The figure was revealed by Dr Stephen Arnott, First Assistant Secretary, Arts, at a Senate Estimates hearing in Canberra earlier this week.
Dr Arnott told Greens Senator Hanson-Young: “As of now, $122 million has been committed, so that leaves $18 million uncommitted.”
The Senator then asked: “Just to be clear, unless we put some more money in, we’ve got $18 million to spend until 2022-23?”

Exclusive: Former Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam is returning to television as the lead of Apple’s sweeping international drama Shantaram, which has been greenlighted to series by the streamer, I have learned.

Apple will launch its streaming service in Australia on November 1, stealing Disney+’s thunder by a matter of weeks.
The Australian launch of Apple TV+ is part of a simultaneous 100 country roll out. Pricing and trial offers are characteristically Apple in their competitiveness, with the Svod service launching at Aud$7.99 per month and a year-long trial period for consumers purchasing a new Apple device on sign up. At this price point, it is cheaper than competitors Netflix, Stan and Disney+, which will launch November 19 in Australia.
Apple TV+ will initially be available on all Apple devices, online via the Apple TV app and additionally supported by Samsung smart TVs. It will then be interoperable at later date with devices including LG, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Sony. Apple originally announced the Apple TV+ platform and its international ambitions in March.

His first UK commission was Requiem, a six-part supernatural drama/thriller which starred Lydia Wilson as an accomplished cellist whose life is turned upside down after her mother’s suicide, produced by New Pictures for BBC One and Netflix.
