The Dead Island cinematic reveal trailer propelled the game from an obscure title known only to horror gamers to one of the most talked about titles in 2011. A feature film may not be moving forward yet, but Hatchet III director Bj McDonnell teamed up with Machinima to create a live-action version of the trailer.
For those that weren’t aware, Lionsgate acquired rights to produce a Dead Island movie back in 2011. We haven’t heard anything since, but this may draw a bit more interest to the project. Here are details from the original announcement:
“Santa Monica, CA, September 27, 2011– Lionsgate® (NYSE: Lgf), a leading global entertainment company, today announced that it has optioned film rights from Deep Silver to develop a feature inspired by Dead Island, which became a viral media sensation when its haunting, artful trailer launched in February 2011. The announcement was made by Lionsgate’s co-coo and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

Anyone who doubts a director making the leap from commercials to features only needs to think of people like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, and Duncan Jones. All of them worked in the medium before (and some after) breaking into helming motion pictures; just because you’re making something that’s 30 seconds doesn’t mean you lack the talent to make a great film.
I bring this up because of Deadline‘s report that Nicolai Fuglsig has been hired by Paramount to direct Brass Monkey, a “real-time kinetic thriller” based on his own idea of following “a killing spree in Los Angeles.” A first draft, written by Paolo Marinou-Blanco, is currently getting the rewrite treatment from Brian Horiuchi. Stefan Sonnenfeld and Missy Papageorge are producing.

Exclusive: Acclaimed commercials director Nicolai Fuglsig has set Brass Monkey at Paramount, hoping to make his directing debut on a real-time kinetic thriller that takes place during a killing spree in Los Angeles. Fuglsig hatched the idea for the film, and Paolo Marinou-Blanco wrote the first draft. Brian Horiuchi has just been hired to rewrite it. Stefan Sonnenfeld is producing with Missy Papageorge and Sarah Perlman is co-producer for Sunny Field Entertainment. Fuglsig is repped by CAA and Management 360. The graphic for Brass Monkey is one that was designed by Fuglsig when he took the pitch to Paramount. Here are two of Fuglsig’s memorable spots. The first, for Guinness, won the DGA Award, and the second aired during the 2008 Super Bowl:...

After a fairly interesting and lengthy bidding war, Lionsgate has won the rights to make a movie off of the recently released video game Dead Island, and have released a statement about the film's production.
Back in February of this year, the cinematic and powerful trailer for Dead Island was released. The internet quickly exploded and websites all over (for both games and movies) were quick to show it off. It was haunting, filled with emotion, story and altogether took people by surprise. It was incredibly well done, and I've yet to see any other trailer move me in such a way.
The game released earlier this month and to everyone's surprise, the trailer had very little to do with the story of the game. Reviews for the game so far have been fairly mixed with fans and haters on both sides. That's not stopping Lionsgate.

Remember when the internet went batsh*t crazy over the announcement trailer for the Dead Island zombie videogame? Soon after movie rights were apparently picked up, but that proved to be false. Lionsgate has now officially announced that they have optioned the rights and have entered the “early development stage” with producers attached. The Mummy producer Sean Daniel plans to oversee the production and the below press release states the film will “focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”
I’ve also embedded the previous much-buzzed-about trailer below and although it seems like the game came and gone without the same level of buzz, this could prove to be a fun property. With Marc Forster‘s World War Z coming out next year and likely dealing with the same themes as above, it will be interesting to see if this one is necessary, or simply feels like a repeat.

After the buzz surrounding the cinematic trailer and the commercial success of the game, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, but is still great news for fans of the game. Lionsgate has officially announced that they have optioned the film rights from Deep Silver to develop a Dead Island movie.

Ever since that frighteningly beautiful trailer for the zombie killing video game Dead Island was released everyone was wondering when we the film adaptation would be announced. That trailer was so awesome, unfortunately when the game was released we found that it actually didn't really have a story and had nothing really to do with that family in the trailer that was released. The basic plot follows a a bunch of vacationers on an island paradise who are attacked by a horde of hellish zombies, but the movie will put a focus on this family we were all introduced to.
According to the press release, "Like the trailer that will serve as its primary creative inspiration, the film Dead Island will be an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling."
Today it's been announced that Lionsgate has acquired the movie rights to the game.

Breaking: Lionsgate has acquired movie rights to Dead Island, the Deep Silver video game about vacationers on an island paradise who are attacked by zombies. A teaser trailer released last February depicting a family fighting off the undead started a rights chase for a video game that was released in September by Techland for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It has sold 2 million units so far. The teaser got 1 million hits in 24 hours. At the time, the rights were shopped by Sean Daniel Company’s Daniel and Jason Brown and Union Entertainment’s Richard Leibowitz and Dmitri Johnson, but there was a big dispute over who actually had the rights. The dust has settled and Daniel, who produced The Mummy series, is the only one of that original team that survived in this configuration. He’ll produce with Stefan Sonnenfeld, a top post-production guy. “Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of...
