In today’s movie landscape, its easy to get a sequel or remake greenlit, particularly in horror, but what about an original movie that is a heavy homage to an older title? This can give is something fresh and fun if done well. It has to have the right ingredients like the right actors on screen, the right script, and know exactly what it is and what it’s meant to accomplish. Indie director Joe Begos was the right guy to give us a wholly original genre flick that came out in 2019 to seemingly good reviews but little fanfare 4 years later. Return To Dust, an arthouse hit in China last summer before being pulled from release, opens Stateside this weekend with Film Movement presenting on two screens – NYC’s Bam Rose Cinema and the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, expanding to LA and Seattle next Friday.
The distributor acquired the film directed by Li Ruijun after it premiered in Berlin in March, 2022 to glowing reviews, see Deadlines’s here. Hai Quing and Wu Renlin star as a middle-aged couple in a rural province encouraged to marry by their families, who see them as a burden. Love and respect slowly as they scratch out a living of extreme hardship working the land. A 95% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
First released last July in China, it played unusually well for an arthouse title there and appeared on streaming platforms in early September before disappearing later that month without explanation.

Fear the Night opens with a confrontation, though not the kind you might expect from a home invasion thriller. Tes is going through a trunk full of scrapbooks in the attic when her sister Beth appears and snaps at her for going through her stuff. Tes points out these are family heirlooms, not hers only for the subject to be changed to Tes swearing in front of Beth’s daughter despite the fact the girl isn’t even in the house at the moment.
These dysfunctional siblings have been brought together by a bachelorette party although it’s not exactly clear why. It’s obvious that Tes, who is suffering from Ptsd and struggling to readjust to society, likes these people about as much as they like her. After the obligatory run-in with...

Being a girl dad has its problems, especially when your daughter thinks you’re a prick. As “Bleeding Love” begins, a teenage girl shoots a jaundiced look at her father who is driving her somewhere in the desolate West. She can’t hear him because her headphones are blaring “I’m Yer Dad,” a not even remotely subtle noise pop song by Grlwood that includes the lyric, “Feed me food while I watch sports / In my man cave made for sports / Whores in my porn, porn in my sports … ’Cause I’m your dad.”
Dad studies her without comprehension. She is his daughter, but she is an undiscovered country to him. He vacated his fatherly duties during his booze years, and now he must deal with an estranged beautiful daughter whose heart stopped beating last night during an overdose. He pulls his pickup to the side of the road so she can pee,...

Thomas Marchese’s supernatural thriller From Black is a story about loss, grief, and the decision to go through the hardest of trials to get somebody’s loved one back. Starring Anna Camp, Jennifer Lafleur, John Ales, and Travis Hammer, From Black is about Cora Loewen, who agrees to undergo a dangerous ritual to get her dead son back. Although the premise sounds interesting, poor direction and bad storytelling techniques make the movie rather unsatisfactory to watch.

Court documents published Friday reveal the first official account of the shooting on the New Mexico set of “Rust.” They suggest that neither Baldwin nor the first assistant director were aware the gun contained a live round up until the moment Baldwin pulled the trigger, fatally wounding cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
The information, first published by the Santa Fe Reporter, comes from a search warrant affidavit that was obtained by the newspaper from a local court. Additionally, IndieWire has obtained the “Rust” call sheet from Thursday, the day of the shooting, that details the weapons that were on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set that day and the people who were responsible for gun safety on set.
The fatal shooting occurred during a rehearsal. In preparation, the armorer laid out three “prop guns” on a rolling cart. An assistant director grabbed one and handed it to Baldwin.

The job is simple. Break into an old couple’s home in the middle of the night, skulk around while they sleep to procure a purple metal box, and then just wait for a 4am call on an already supplied burner phone. In, out, and thousands of dollars richer. Saying “No’ isn’t therefore an option for Minny (Danay Garcia) and Gil (Michael Drayer) considering they don’t even have to get their hands dirty as getaway driver and lookout respectively. Having a baby on the way and zero prospects for affording the costs to care for one twist their arms too. Nobody could have anticipated a bunch of idiots driving by with radio blaring and horn honking the exact moment this heist goes down. Carefully laid plans sadly mean zilch.

One of the best films to play the festivals, including Fantasia, last year was Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen’s home invasion film For the Sake of Vicious. So when I started hearing a similar buzz about Baby Money, directed by Luc Walpoth and Mikhael Bassilli and co-written by Bassilli and Mj Palo, I saw some similarities and decided to check it out.
Minny and Gil are about to become parents. They’re also out of money and out of options. Desperate for cash they join Tony and Dom in what should be an easy bit of burglary. The three men go in, grab the loot and Minny does the driving.

Arriving in theaters this weekend is the pulse-pounding and bone-crunching action/horror hybrid Vfw, from director Joe Begos. The film pits a grizzled group of veterans against a ragtag horde of punks who have descended upon the veterans’ local watering hole, resulting in a fight to the bitter end. Written by Max Brallier and Matthew McArdle, Vfw stars Stephen Lang, Martin Kove, William Sadler, Fred Williamson, George Wendt, Tom Williamson, Sierra McCormick, Travis Hammer, and Dora Madison.
Last year, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Joe Begos and Stephen Lang while at Fantastic Fest (you can read part one of our interview Here), and the duo chatted about tackling the ambitious action sequences throughout Vfw and the various challenges Begos faced while crafting his most ambitious feature to date.

That co-writer Matthew McArdle remains shocked even after seeing the film he and Max Brallier wrote on the big screen shows how tough the accomplishment proves. Best friends since childhood, the two began their script for Vfw with transparent intentions as far as harkening back to the no-holds-barred VHS gems they’d scour video store shelves to find. Using John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 as inspiration, they created a group of aging vets decades-removed from service yet still thick as thieves with a drug-fueled, zombie-esque horde threatening to attack their Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in waves. It took seven years, but Dallas Sonnier finally called to say he’d finance it before director Joe Begos, a stellar cast of character actors, and the rejuvenated Fangoria label came aboard.

If this weekend you’re only seeing one depressing character study about an unemployable, fatherless, antisocial manchild who lives with his sickly mother, is often unattractively shirtless, and eventually decides society must pay violently for his general misery … then you are almost certainly going to “Joker.” As it happens, however, there is an alternative also fitting that description perfectly well. “Cuck” is, in fact, “Joker” with even less vestige of superheroics than Todd Phillips’ atypical comic-book movie, about precisely the sort of people some have feared will take “Joker” as an incitement to real-world violence: the usually white incel-type man who feels marginalized and somehow robbed of success, who in worst-case scenarios ends up shooting up a school, workplace or other public space to feel his rage isn’t entirely impotent.
It’s certainly worth having more than one film wade into this terrain, particularly since “Joker” allegedly goes out...

Weird indie band experiments? Safe words? Michael Fassbender in a large papier-mâché head? It can only be Frank, and the frankly barmy first clip is online courtesy of The Playlist. With Fassbender choosing to obscure his mug in a Frank Sidebottom-alike head, the story, from The Men Who Stare At Goats’ Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan, finds Domhnall Gleeson playing Jon, who joins a band led by the eccentric Frank. Loosely based on comedian and musician Chris Sievey (with influences from Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart), Frank tells the story of a group who want to make some truly new music, and go about it in very strange ways. The film comes from Lenny Abrahamson, who last brought us What Richard Did, and promises to deliver much more madness than even the rest of the indie fare as it hits the Sundance Film Festival.
