27 years ago, Chris Rock resurrected his career with one of the greatest hours of stand-up comedy I've ever seen. I was a month away from graduating college when "Bring the Pain" aired after the HBO Saturday night premiere of "Congo" or something less sublime when Eddie Murphy's once-prized protege, who'd been ignominiously fired from "Saturday Night Live" after three underwhelming seasons, took the stage in Washington D.C. and became the George Carlin of his generation. It was a set fueled by fury at white folks pandering admiration of Colin Powell ("He speaks so well!"), Black folks' support of crackhead Marion Barry ("I can be Mayor!"), and, to put it diplomatically, racial anti-intellectualism. Sandwiched in between all of this was a brilliantly random rant about an HBO prison documentary in which a prisoner waxed poetic about the pleasures of "salad tossing." It was like watching Greg Maddux throw a complete-game shutout.

Time travel is all the rage on TV right now, from escapist fun (Timeless) to sweeping romance (Outlander). The CW’s Frequency — a reboot of the 2000 Dennis Quaid film — opts for the heartstring-tugging route, with a daughter reconnecting with her deceased dad via a magical radio.
Wednesday’s series premiere introduced us to Raimy Sullivan (Mad Men‘s Peyton List), an NYPD detective in present-day Queens, with a nice boyfriend who’s about to pop the question. But Raimy’s still haunted by the memory of her cop dad Frank (Nashville‘s Riley Smith), who died while working undercover twenty years ago,...

There are few topics that get baseball fans more riled up than the question of who should (or should not) be in the Hall of Fame. People tend to take that shit extremely personally, as if denying your pet case for induction a plaque in Cooperstown — or giving one to an "undeserving" player ahead of him — is somehow tantamount to negating your fandom, your childhood or even your very existence as a human being.

Deadline reported yesterday that Universal has offered the Bourne franchise directing gig to Tony Gilroy, who wrote the previous Bourne films and also directed Michael Clayton and what I thought was an underrated Duplicity.
With Gilroy on board, Matt Damon is now put in an awkward position. He stated previously that he wouldn't make another Bourne film without Paul Greengrass (who directed the last two installments), but Universal is insisting that they'll make it with or without him. Damon then will be forced to choose between his loyalty to Greengrass and his allegiance to the Bourne character, which made Damon the international superstar he is now. Does he let that franchise go to shit with someone like Matthew McConaughey or Sam Worthington, or does he return, reasoning that Tony Gilroy is a decent compromise.
It looks like Universal is playing chicken with Damon, and I'd like to believe that, if Damon calls their bluff,...

It's official: "Avatar" is now the biggest money-making movie of all time. James Cameron's massive, technological envelope-pushing 3-D depiction of the planet of Pandora and the struggle of the race known as the Na'vi has been helped out a bit by inflation and the high cost of an IMAX ticket, but it's still a remarkable feat. It stands on top of the mountain once topped by "Titanic" (another James Cameron epic).
When the "Titanic" phenomenon happened back in 1997, most movie industry professionals thought that no film would ever touch the film's box office record. But "Avatar" managed to eclipse it, and it did it relatively effortlessly. Records are obviously made to be broken, and though it'll probably take years (or whenever Cameron gets around to making another movie), there will be another film that will come along and take the number one place in the line. But there are...
