Journalist Jonathan Abrams spent the last four years compiling an enlightening, entertaining, and deeply researched history of hip-hop. Abrams traces the music’s humble beginning in the Bronx and DIY block parties to some of the most popular music in the world today. In this exclusive excerpt from “The Come Up: An Oral History of the Rise of Hip-Hop,” Abrams tells how the infamous 1977 New York City blackout helped electrify a sound and cultural force.

He was part of the pioneering hip hop collective Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, the first rappers to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Now Kidd Creole is in jail for allegedly stabbing a homeless ex-con during a late night scuffle on the streets of Manhattan. His tumultuous life had taken him from thrilling crowds at Madison Square Garden to making ends meet by working odd jobs as a security guard and handyman, but few could have predicted his descent into murder.
Kidd Creole was born Nathaniel Glover Jr. on Feb. 19, 1960, and grew up in the south Bronx.

Anyone who knows their Hip-Hop should recognize why we enlisted Sadat X to give us his appraisal of the genre-mashing new actioner "Cowboys & Aliens."
He is, after all, "The Wild Cowboy."
The Brand Nubian rapper saddled up for the ride recently at a Manhattan theater and quite liked what he surveyed, especially appreciating the film's rock 'em, sock 'em action scenes and the golden efforts of its two stars, Harrison "Indy" Ford and Daniel "Bond" Craig.
Watch the full review below.
Buy Sadat X's brand-nu album "No Features" on iTunes, or check him out coaching on a new episode of MTV's "Made."...

Humboldt Storms have been working hard on their second volume full length album. And to coincide with the release they have even found time to make a new and exciting looking zombie movie entitled 'The Purple Plague'. The CD release includes artists such as Ill Bill (La Coka Nostra), Sabac Red (Non Phixion) and Sadat X (Brand Nubian). The DVD itself will feature 'The Purple Plague', the first chapter in a new series of zombie installments. But even better is news that the DVD portion stars ex-Playboy hottie and former WWE diva Maria Kanellis (below) as the lead character, Lady Jane. The album and DVD combo will arrive this October and you can check out more info along with the full list of contributing artists and a brief teaser trailer for 'The Purple Plague' below....

When I was forwarded this news item I wasn't exactly what to make of it. In fact, I'm still not 100% sure what it is. At first I thought it was a web series but there's constant mention of a joint cd/DVD release later this year. Whatever The Purple Plague is, it's hyper-stylized and features ex-wwe diva Maria Kanellis battling zombies.
Here's the rest of the info I could find on The Purple Plague from the official website of Humboldt Storms.
Maria Kanellis of Playboy, Celebrity Apprentice and WWE Diva fame stars as Lady Jane in "The Purple Plague". Chapter one of the movie will be found on Humboldt Storms Vol. 2 cd/dvd released October 2011. The Purple Plague is being filmed and produced in a new cutting edge style that is an explosive mixture of animation and live action, twisted in a way that makes it a mind-blowing assult on the visual senses!
